MSC World America Cruise - May 24, 2025
Just the Facts
Ship: The new (only weeks old) MSC World America
Captain: Dino Sagani (Italy) — Cruise Director: Everson Beville (USA)
Ports: Miami - Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic - San Juan, Puerto Rico - Ocean Cay, Bahamas
I’m cruising as a solo on this 7-day cruise. This is obviously my first cruise on this brand new MSC ship, my 26th cruise on MSC, and my 222nd cruise overall.
Saturday, May 24th - Miami, Florida - Embarkation - Day 1 I woke early and met my Uber driver at 7:00 a.m. for the 30-minute trip to the TPA airport. The one-hour flight to Miami was easy, arriving at approximately 10:00 a.m. The MSC transfer personnel were waiting at the baggage claim, so there was only a short wait for the next bus to the Port of Miami. We arrived at the new MSC Terminal by 11:30 a.m., and my check-in was extremely smooth, thanks to the latest facial recognition Security checks. I was very pleased with the super smooth travel and embarkation process. I dropped off my backpack in my cabin on Deck 18 forward at about 12:30, then went aft to the ll Mercato Buffet located on Deck 18 aft. I enjoyed Pork Culettes, Chicken, Potatoes, and Vegetables. I then began my walkabout on this new huge mega-ship, beginning with checking in at my Muster Station A on Deck Seven. I then went to the unique outdoor World Promenade on Deck 8 aft (photo). It is incredible with restaurants, bars, shops, and a beautiful aft view. I stopped at the All-Stars Sports Bar and was recognized by Roosevelt, who was my Bar Server several times in the Brooklyn Lounge on the Seashore. I enjoyed a nice Belgian beer, one of many beers available on draft. They have ESPN-Caribbean on the ship, so at 3:00 p.m. I returned to the cabin to watch my OU Sooners win the NCAA Regionals in Softball. College World Series next. The WiFi was good, I received it as a Blue Diamond perk, and adding streaming was only $14 more. I went up to Deck 20 and the Top 20 exclusive Solarium, as recommended by Rosie, for two very nice Cosmopolitan cocktails.
I then went to the Elixir Mixology Bar on Deck 8. They have a great selection of Bourbon, Whisky, and Scotch, including a large selection of Single-Malts. I had a specialty passion-fruit martini, but it was a bit too sweet for me. No Elderflower in this bar. It was now time for dinner; I have a 8:30 p.m. seating at the Hexigon Restaurant with a private two-top table. I like the arrangement as I’ll eat at several places and will always have this as a backup. Tonight, I ordered: Mozzarella-Stuffed Meatball (excellent), Fire-Roasted Tomato Creme Soup, Shrimp Cocktail, Pennette Pasta Bolognese, and the Slow-Roasted Prime Rib entrée. It was all terrific, as was the service. I retired after dinner following the busy day. It was a surprisingly effortless embarkation day.
Sunday, May 25th - at Sea - Day 2 Smooth seas overnight, and I slept well in my interior solo cabin. I ordered Leche Caliente (hot milk), Danish, and Juice delivered this morning, knowing I would eat light following a late dinner. I began this review and made reservations for shows in the Theater and Lounges this morning. I recommend doing this on the first day, and I was fortunate to have accomplished all that I did. I also revised my specialty dining after reviewing the whole week's activities. I’m usually very casual with this, but as this is a new ship with new activities, I want to see and do as many as possible. At about 11:30, I went to the Top 20 for a Daquari, then to the World Theater for the Sea Day production show
Dirty Dancing in Concert. They present the entire movie accompanied by live music, featuring the ship's Singers and Dancers. It was fantastic. I have consistently lobbied for production shows on Sea Days, and the theater was packed. Hopefully, we’ll see more. Afterward, I returned to the Top 20 for another Daquari, then to the Il Mercado buffet for a light lunch of Carved Pork and Mashed Potatoes. A wee walkabout before returning to the cleaned cabin and a wee nap. About 6:30,
I began my Captain’s Night by walking up to the
Top 20 for a couple of Cosmopolitans; they treat me well there, and the sea air is nice. I then went down to Deck 8 to the
Masters of the Sea, a Pub where the senior bartender is Andrew, whom I had sailed with on the Divina. He sent a Server to another bar to retrieve some Elderflower liquor and prepared an excellent Elderflower Martini for me. My timing was perfect on leaving, as just outside in the massive three-level interior space, they were introducing the Senior officers from Sky Bridge to the many guests below. We were just about to greet Captain Sagani,
and we exchanged pleasantries before he stepped out onto the sky bridge. I’ve sailed with him previously on both MSC and Princess. It was now time for the special menu in the Hexigon Restaurant. I ordered: Eggplant Parmigiana, Lobster Bisque, Duo of Broiled Lobster Tail & Grilled Jumbo Shrimp, Filet Mignon, and Baked Alaska for dessert. It was all perfect and the Filet was as good a steak as I have experienced on a cruise. Perfect. Guests no longer dress for this evening. I did not see a single jacket on a gentleman in the entire MDR. Truthfully, I prefer it. I retired to the cabin after dinner and was soon asleep. This evening a beautiful porcelin Model of the
MSC World America was delivered to my cabin as a Blue Diamond Benefit. Perhaps I get one on each ship I sail as I did receive one for the MSC Seashore in January. It was a great Sea Day on the World America.
Monday, May 26 - Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic - Day 3 There were smooth seas overnight, and I slept very well. I woke up, updated this blog, and relaxed. Since I have been to this port many times, I plan to stay onboard and explore this new ship today. At about 9:30, I went to the Mercado Buffet and enjoyed some fresh eggs, bacon, and hash brown potatoes with milk. As I walked across the mostly empty pool deck, I acquired some Diet Cokes for the cabin. At about 11:30, I started my walkabout from the top decks down. Decks 22 and 21 are just the entry point for various wet and dry slides. Deck 20 forward, I have done because of the Top-20 bar area. Deck 20 aft is large and has the MSC Gym and the activities area, including: an indoor basketball court, the Cliffhanger (photo), the Bumper Cars, the Adventure Trail course, the Harbor Bar with snacks, additional Slide entrances, and more. Deck 19 has the youth areas, the electronic Games area, the MSC Formula Racers, and, previously unknown to me, La Brasserie, a nice little buffet area where I had lunch today. On many other mega ships, this area would be the opposite side of the main buffet, but this is above the main buffet, one deck below. I do like it better…Today I had two slices of excellent Pizza and a nice Salad from the Salad Bar. I have explored Deck 18 a lot as my cabin is 18 forward and the Mercado Buffet is 18 aft, so I have walked daily through the main pool deck. I then went down to deck 8 in the Panoramic Lifts. Next, I dropped to deck 6 to walk from aft to the forward elevators to return to the cabin. Jorge, my cabin steward, made up my cabin, so it was time to relax with a Diet Coke, update this blog, and post some photos. At about 4:00, I went to the Top-20 for a nice Daquri and enjoyed the wonderful sea Breeze. I watched the new NCL Aqua, which was docked next to us, sail away. MSC’s newest ship is larger than NCL’s newest. My new Bar tour continued this evening when I visited the Dolce Vita Bar on Deck Six. The Elderflower Martinis were excellent, and I saw parts of two musical groups sandwiched around some Salsa Dance lessons. Dinner tonight was good. I ordered: Italian Wedding Soup, Shrimp Cocktail, Penne Pasta Bolognese, and the Swordfish entree, with Apple Strudel for dessert. I considered a show, but only did a short walkabout…I did see Cruise Director Everson, and thanks for the Facebook ‘like’, Dr. E. I soon retired for the evening; it was another great day on the new MSC World America.
Tuesday, May 27, 2025 - San Juan, Puerto Rico - Day 4 There were smooth seas overnight, and I slept well. I woke early, updated this blog, and checked the news and markets…. It looks to be a great day today. I went for a repeat breakfast this morning: Eggs, bacon, and potatoes with an orange drink. I enjoyed a little time in the covered Zen Pool area while Jorge cleaned my cabin for the day. We are docked in OSJ until 11:00 p.m., so no hurry for me to debark the ship this morning. At about 1:00 p.m. I debarked the ship, and as most know, we are docked in downtown OSJ, so almost everything is walkable (photo). I went directly across the street to Walgreens, which I know will be packed when guests return to the ship. I’m not walking uphill today, so I went to one of my favorite places near the pier:
La Casita de Rones on the water west of the cruise piers. I had bartender Hector's version of the classic 1950s Pina Colada, as that is what one does in San Juan. We had entertainment and a nice breeze to cool the summer air. Before returning to the ship, I also enjoyed the wonderful Fish Bites and a local Medalla beer. You can search
San Juan on this blog for my various adventures here. Once onboard, I got Ice and Coca-Colas from the Top-20 Bar and settled in the cabin to do some business since I have secure telephone service here. A complementary bottle of Proceco on ice was delivered as well as some Macaroons as a Diamond Benefit. Thank you, MSC. Tonight, I ate at Hola Tacos, a favorite of mine on MSC, which is real Tex-Mex food. I ordered Guacamole (2), Pico de Gallo (2), Queso Fundido, Tacos Al Pastor (2), Tacos Carne Asada (2), Tacos Chili Con Carne (2), and Mangoritas (2), with Mexican Flan for dessert. All very good, and the Queso was extra special. Hostess Ginevra (Italy) and my Waiter Brian from Zimbabwe were great. Of course, I’m just back from Zimbabwe, so a lot to talk about with Brian. I did another walkabout after dinner and have a better feel for the ship. It was a great port day.
Wednesday, May 28, 2025 - Day at Sea - Day 5 Smooth seas overnight, and I slept very well. I had some Macaroons for breakfast, all I needed following my Hola Tacos dinner. I had a restful Cabin morning updating the Blog and doing some business. At about 11:25 a.m. I went to the Seaday Buffet in the MDR. There was a short wait, but I was seated at table 977 by 11:45. The menu was identical to the Seashore, so I assume fleetwide. I never saw my waiter for over half an hour, but another took my order, and my waiter, David (Kenya), delivered my items…I had heard they were having some MDR problems, although the dinner service has been excellent. The food, once it arrived, was fantastic. I ordered Hot Milk & Danish, the English breakfast with Filet, Chips, and Fried Eggs. I also had extra bacon, toast, and a nice Bloody Mary. It was after 1:15 p.m. once I got away, but I was very pleased with the food. I did a walkabout, and the pool decks are very busy and full of guests. It was busy everywhere I went on the ship. We sailed along the coast of Hispaniola for several hours, and it was interesting to see as we sailed along. At about 5:00 p.m. I went to Master's of the Sea (the Pub) for Elderflower Martinis, then to the Blue Diamond Reception at 6:00. The exclusive gathering was held on Deck 8 aft with the beautiful aft view of the wake. I was greeted by and photographed with Captain Sagani, who was very nice. They had complementary drinks, light hors d’oeuvres, and entertainment. I met various ship officers, including the Hotel Director, the Beverage Manager, and the Food and Beverage Manager. It was very nice, and the location was terrific. I then walked the 60 feet to Paxos Greek Taverna for dinner. I chose a table outdoors along the World Promenade, as it’s a great place to people-watch on this White Night. Many guests seated near me were curious when the Captain stopped to shake my hand and chat, then other officers said hello as they passed for the next few minutes. Of course, they had to pass by me as they left the gathering. It made me feel special, and I then got fantastic service from the staff. I enjoyed my meal, best of the trip (so far). I started with a wonderful Pita Bread with two dips tonight & a Cherry Splash cocktail. Then two cold Mezes: a Greek Salad and a Watermelon & Feta Salad. My entree was the Giaourtlou Kebab (lamb & beef) with Tzatziki and a Portokalopita (phyllo cake) for dessert. It was a fantastic meal, and I took another cocktail for my walkabout. I was impressed that the vast majority of guests (75% by my estimate) were dressed in white tonight. The ship's officers, including the Hotel Director, do an impressive special dance routine in the Deck 6 Promenade as part of White Night activities. I soon retired. It was a great sea day on the World America.
Thursday, May 29, 2025 - Day at Sea - Day 6 Overnight, the seas were smooth, and I slept very well. I didn’t wake until after 10:00 a.m. I had a Macaroon for breakfast, checked the open markets, and reviewed my agenda for the day. I began the day by picking up my digital photo from last night at the Photo area on Deck 7, amazing how everything has facial recognition now. I had noon reservations at the steakhouse, Butcher's Cut. I used my complimentary dinner here, and they allowed me to trade my dessert for a Salad. I ordered the Wedge Salad, the Burrato & Beets Salad, and the Filet Mignon entree with loaded Baked Potato & Spinach. It was all good, especially the Filet. Also, the freshly-baked bread, my cocktail, and the service were good. After the sumptuous lunch, I did a walkabout before settling in for the first day of the WCWS (Women's College World Series). I watched the end of the TX/FL game, then Oklahoma’s game vs. Tennessee began at about 3:00 p.m. TN scored three runs in the first two innings and OU only 1. The game continued for the next five innings at 3-1, and TN had the #1 voted ace pitcher, so it didn’t look good for my team. But Sooner Magic was about to happen as OU scored 3 runs with two outs in the last at-bat with a walk-off home run, winning 4-3. Having never held the lead to winning on the final pitch. It was a very emotional win. After recovering from the game, I went to the World Theater to see the production show Hall of Fame (photo). It was entertaining with talented singers, but too loud for me, so I guess I’m officially too old for some newer music. I then went to Masters of the Sea, where my bartender, Andrew, prepared some excellent Elderflower Martinis. It was Italian Night in the Main Dining Rooms, and the tables and waiters were dressed in Italian colors. I ordered two Shrimp Cocktails and the delicious Chicken Parmigiana with extra Marinara. It was great, even better than on the MSC Seashore. This is the only night in the MDR that the waiters will entertain the guests. I have been very pleased with the food on MSC World America. I did a final walkabout the ship before retiring. It was a busy day on our final sea day on the MSC World America.
Friday, May 30th, 2025 - Ocean Cay, Bahamas - Day 7 Smooth seas overnight. I was up late and slept late this morning. We are at the MSC private island, Ocean Cay, today. Other cruise lines' islands tend to have amusements; however, Ocean Cay is a Nature Reserve, and the pristine beaches and nature make it special. I woke after 10:00 a.m., checked the Stock Markets, then reviewed the sports news and social media about yesterday's big OU softball game. I had lunch at the Mercado Buffet, sampling fried chicken, Asian beef with lemon noodles, and roast pork with applesauce from the carving station. Then, I ate a platter of watermelon outside on the pool deck and enjoyed the view of Ocean Cay. I had an easy day and watched some videos on YouTube. Mr. Elon Musk’s Starlink is ideal for Cruise Ships, and my WiFi service has been excellent. I went to the Masters of the Sea Pub for an Elderflower martini, then remembering the Cherry Splash I enjoyed, I went to the Patio area of Paxos Greek Restaurant for two cocktails. They also have simple food available there, so you don’t have to eat inside the restaurant area unless you wish. I will try that in the future. I then went to Eataly on Deck 8 for dinner. I wasn’t fond of Eataly on the older MSC ships, but I thought I should try the newer concept. Mistake, my least favorite of the four specialty restaurants. I had a Caesar Salad, a Pasa Ragu, and the Pork entree. The Pasta was good, I’d pass on anything else. I preferred Paxos Greek, Hola Tacos, Butcher’s Cut Steakhouse, and Eataly in that order. I had reservations for the late production show, but retired to the cabin to organize for an early morning departure. A nice final day on the MSC World America.
