Review--Carnival Conquest--September 20, 2009
Just The Facts:
Carnival Conquest
September 20-September 27, 2009
Captain: Massimo Marino
Cruise Director: Kyle Post
Hotel Director: Marvin Barrantes
Ports: Galveston - Key West - Freeport - Nassau - Galveston
Weather: Good all week
This is my 18th Carnival cruise and 8th time on the Conquest. I'm sailing as a part of the Carnival Conquest Crazies, a group originating from Cruise Critic folks who originally enjoyed watching the Conquest sail into and out of port on the Galveston web cameras. I'm sailing as a solo on this cruise.
Day One--Sunday--Embarkation
I left the ranch at 6:15 a.m. and drove straight through to Galveston. I parked at EZ Cruise parking as usual and I highly recommend them if you are driving to the port. I usually walk from EZ Cruise, but since I actually arrived earlier than usual I just waited for their shuttle. A very smooth process, and they help with the bags and drop you at the cruise terminal. Debarkation was going slow due to a crew inspection so there was a short delay in boarding. The VIP check-in and waiting area certainly helps in speeding up boarding. We started boarding about 11:45 am and I was at the Lido buffet just after noon. There were several ahead of me, but I proceeded to the rear buffet line and 'sure enough' I was the first one there. They really don't decorate the buffets as they used to do, but it's still nice to be the first to serve your self from the individual food items. I had a Salad and Roast Beef from the carving station. I tried a selection of other items and had the tres leche Cheese Cake for dessert. I ran into friends that I/we have sailed with many times (all unplanned) including the last time I was on the Conquest so I had lunch with them and then waited until 1:30 p.m. when the cabins were opened to guests. The cabin is very nice with port holes which is rare for a 1A classification. It was now raining so I was glad that I had boarded early. I took a short nap then reviewed the Capers for plans for the rest of the day. My bag was delivered about 3:00 so I was able to unpack before muster drill that was held about 3:45 p.m. We sailed just after the scheduled 4:00 pm time. I watched sail away from deck and saw more people that I knew from previous cruises and also in the Crazies group. I enjoyed a couple of “Funship Special” cocktails as per tradition. It really is the best of the Drink of the Day selections. After visiting with old and new friends I had some cabin time before dinner. Dinner is at 8:15 and I am assigned the Monet dining room. My table and surrounding tables are all members of the group so it will be a fun week. For dinner I had a Green Salad, the Tilapia, the Sweet & Sour Shrimp, and the Cream Brule for dessert. The Welcome Aboard Show was scheduled for 10:30 p.m. It featured the Carnival Singers & Dancers, CD Kyle Post, and comedian Marc Ruben.
Day Two--Monday--Fun day at Sea
Awoke to sunshine and fair seas this morning. I enjoyed a good nights sleep and up early. The ship rocked just enough to make it very nice and I felt no vibrations in the forward cabin at all. I had breakfast in the Monet dining room, my personal standard 1st morning carnival breakfast of Eggs Benedict, side of bacon & hash browns, tomato juice, and grapefruit which were very good. It was French day in the 'Tastes of Nations' section, but I had lunch from the NEW Mongolian Grill located on Lido deck. This was one of the new features installed at the recent dry dock. You pick the noodles and veges's you want then the chef adds the meat choice and sauce and cooks it for you in a wok. I had Pork in a Szechwan and Chicken in Thai sauce. It was very spicy yet very good. After lunch I had a nice walk around deck and then a short nap in the cabin. In the afternoon the Crazies group had a Meet & Greet in the Degas lounge. It's great to put faces to online screen names. I walked around the promenade and there were lots of activities such as: Karaoke, Trivia, Golf instructions, and Music in the lobby area. There is plenty to do for those looking for activities beyond the Lido deck and pool activities. I also purchased an Internet package ($100 for 240+ minutes) so I spent a little time online. Tonight was the first elegant night. They no longer have a Captains cocktail reception with complementary drinks, but offer $1 off cocktails at the promenade deck bars. The Captain was available for photographs for a set time. The production show Point and Click was the primary entertainment this evening. I was really glad I attended as they have revamped the show with all new costumes, pyrotechnics, and new beautiful sets. The feature singers and dancers were great. For dinner I had the Pumpkin Soup, Stuffed Mushrooms and the Seafood entrée consisting of lobster and jumbo shrimp. The lobster was very good and I did have a second one. I had the Cherries Jubilee for desert. Tonight we changed ships time to one hour forward. I suspect they have had problems getting people back on board in Key West if they don't match the local time.
Day Three-Tuesday-Key West, Florida
It's a nice day today and the seas were again smooth overnight although a little more choppy than previous day. I again had a very pleasant nights sleep. I had breakfast in the dining room: Tomato juice, Grapefruit, Fried Eggs, Bacon, Hash Browns, and Toast. Very Good, I enjoy the service in the dining room. We arrived in Key West on time and debarkation began about 10:00 am. I had charged my GPS and cell phone overnight so I was prepared for a day in town. We docked at Mallory Square the prime spot for cruise ships as you can walk to town. The Carnival Imagination was docked at the Navy pier dock.
I had a special project planned for the day. We knew that my wife's grandfather, Mr. Wm. Bagby, died in Key West in the 30's and we had previously attempted to find his grave at the Old Key West cemetery (an interesting place to visit--it is the cemetery that has the headstone: “I told you I was sick”) but we were usually in Key West on the Rhapsody of the Seas which arrived too late in the day to do proper research. Today I went to the old Key West library and a nice local gentlemen in the research department was able to locate a story on the front page of the Key West newspaper from September 16, 1940 that carried a story about his death. It turns out he was a General Contractor and Home Builder (which we didn't know) and was found dead in his home at the age of 47. (He had actually just turned 45.) That seems curious and unfortunately there was no follow up article to be found. The gentleman who helped me was a local historian and he knew immediately from information in the article the unique homes he was building at the time of his death. These homes were built in the art deco style on E avenue. The article did have the address of his residence so I entered that into my GPS and walked the seven blocks to take a look. It was a bungalow, one in a series of four or five. It wasn't too large which would make since as he was a single man at the time. I took a photo of the house and there was a young man outside who said he lived there all his life and he would get his grandmother. She had lived there for over 40 years and had heard the stories of the man who was found there. I asked her if she ever saw ghosts in the house and she said “yes, all the time”. She suggested that I find Miss Lola, aged 92, who used to own all the property there and lived in the next block. I did go to see if I could find her but the instructions were very unclear. Here some fate helped. A young couple who lived in the block and I by chance spoke with knew Miss Lola and directed me to the correct house. It was a small house but very nice, much nicer than the others in the area. Miss Lola answered the door herself. I showed her the newspaper article (not sure she could read it) and explained about looking for information about the man who had died in the house. She claimed she didn't know that much about it other than hearing the stories, but the longer I spoke with her the more information I got. It turned out that Mr. Bagby not only owned the bungalow that was his residence, but all of them on the street. It was probably his previous project prior to building the six larger art deco ones. She also said 'when that man was killed' not 'was found' something I had already suspected. As it turns out it was her family that later acquired the property, she claimed through a Judge Lopez. Amazing that she would recall that specific fact. Probably all legit as he could have been a probate judge, but the family never knew anything about any of this. I had a very interesting day in Key West playing detective. I would have loved to see the six houses that were under construction on Avenue E at the time of his death as they are now well known in Key West for their art deco design. The problem is that they were not within walking distance. DW and I are both returning next month so we will get a golf cart or some transport in order to see them. After my research project I ended up at the famous Sloppy Joes's on Duvall street for beers. Sloppy Joe's opened in that location in 1937 and Mr. Bagby moved to Key West in 1938 so most assuredly he walked on those same Spanish tiles that are still there today. Very interesting to reflect on life in Key West in the 1930's with Mr. Bagby, Hemmingway, the fisherman, rum runners, and all the colorful characters. So I had a very interesting day, very different from a usual cruise excursion.
The feature shows this evening had singer Marcus Anthony who does Motown and soul music. I have seen the show so took a short nap before dinner. Dinner was one of the weaker menus. If one wanted to eat at The Point, this would be a good night. I had French onion soup, Green Salad, and Jerk flavored pork. I did try the new Fig dessert and it was fair. Tonight they had a Mardi Gras deck party in the bars and on Lido deck, but after all the walking today and the beers at Sloppy Joe's I retired early.
Day Four--Wednesday-Freeport, Bahamas
There was partly cloudy skies and nice weather following a brief shower this morning. I had another good nights sleep with even more roll than the previous night. We were docked very early and I believe people began going ashore early as well. I caught up on some work on the laptop this morning and became confused with the time. The laptop is still on Texas time so I thought I quit in time to make the dining room, but alas it was closed, I was an hour off ships time. It worked out well though as so many guests were already off the ship and it wasn't busy at the buffet. So I had a nice omelet from the omelet station in the Cezzane on Lido deck. I decide to go to Port Lucaya for the day. Taxi's vans take ten people at a time and the fare is $5 per person. I started off at the Port Lucaya Marketplace and then to the Raddison Hotel. It's very nice with several swimming pools and a nice beach. I had a Bahama Mama and a special cocktail at the Hammerhead, the beach bar. I also ordered a fruit plate of local fruit that was different and very good. I enjoyed a very nice day with a beautiful view of the beach. I returned to the ship about 4:00 pm and refreshed. I ordered sandwiches from room service and they came straightaway. The past guest parties were held this afternoon. I didn't attend, but I believe they had complementary drinks as I saw guests with some of the the small cocktail glasses. Since I have friends staying on the Panorama Deck next month I watched the sail away from Freeport from the Panorama Deck viewing area that is located forward above the bridge. A good place to view a sail away and from that level you could see the Carnival Ecstacy that has just gone into dry dock. It was very interesting to see the entire ship out of the water. The production show was Lady Helevi, Enchantress of the Elements. It is a Carnival produced show featuring a Magician and the Conquest Dancers. The costumes were really unique and beautiful. This is a very visual show, the type of show with little dialogue that will be the future for cruises with a lot of international guests. Although very colorful it is not one of my favorites. I spent some time watching the various acts around the ship. They have more single and duet musicians playing around the ship. Dinner was very good this evening, I had a shrimp cocktail, a Neptune seafood dish and the Grilled pork chop. One of the menu changes is they now have two of my favorite desserts on the same night. The answer to that is you have both so I had a Tirimisu and the Bitter & Blanc. After dinner friends and I watched Timmy Pierce, one of the solo musicians, play in the Atrium lobby. He was very good and we actually stayed for several sets. I actually met him over beers in Key West. He is a very nice young man and talented musician.
Day Five--Thursday-Nassau, Bahamas
Another good night sleep. We arrived by 7:00 am. and are docked at the Nassau piers. I slept a little later this morning so I had the omelet from the Cezzane omelet station again. This is to be my stay on the ship on a port day for this cruise. I actually did go ashore for just an hour to the Internet cafe near the pier, but was back aboard by 11:00 am just as the Carnival Pride finished docking next to the Conquest. There were few people on board and I enjoyed the aft pool in the morning and afternoon. There was no line at the Mongolian Grill and I had a wonderful Beef with Szechwan dish. I later had a nice salad and dessert from the buffet. I even went down the big slide at the forward pool. I then relaxed in the cabin and had a short nap in the late afternoon. I went to deck 3 over the gangway to watch the late arrivals about 5:00 and sure enough one very late arriving lady really had the staggers & jags. She not only flashed, but really put on a topless show. There was still one person missing so we didn't sail away for another half hour. The Carnival Pride and Carnival Conquest did a nice ship's horn exchange as the Conquest pulled away from the pier. Cool. I always enjoy the sail aways. Tonight's production show was scheduled to be a comedian, but I guess he didn't didn't make the ship so the production singers had a show. The ship had a mojito special at the Casino Bar and since it's one of my favorite drinks I had to sample. Just two years ago you could not even get a mojito on a Carnival ship and now they have drink specials--amazing. Dinner was very good, I had the Delice of the Sea, Escargot, the Chateaubriand, and Baked Alaska for desert. The waiter follows details very well as he brought extra Béarnaise sauce and a bit of horseradish. The meat was cooked perfectly and this was really the best meal of the cruise. I decided to check out several of the lounges and visited Vincent's (Timmy) and Casino Bar (Music Manilla) after dinner.
Day Six-Friday-at Sea
Another good nights sleep. The sky is party cloudy but seas are smooth. I went to the Monet dining room for breakfast and had the Eggs Benedict, et al and it was better than the first morning. I almost expected to be in Cozumel this morning just out of habit. Of all the cruises I have taken departing from Galveston this will be the first that does NOT make a port call in Cozumel. I had some computer time in the morning. For lunch I went to the Mongolian Grill and had pork with Szechwan and a nice Salad from the buffet. After lunch I took a nice walk around the decks and later watched a movie in the cabin. The production show was Formidable. I have seen it eight times, but still enjoy it. The Can-can is my favorite part of the show. There were some new sets and minor changes from the previous time I saw the show. Dinner was good. I had the Fried Shrimp appetizer, Green Salad, the Red Snapper, and the Filet Mignon. The filet was a petit fillet, but not a filet mignon. Not as good as the one I had on my previous Conquest cruise. After dinner I went to Vincents, one of the prettiest lounges on the ship to see Timmy do a set. There were a lot of guests enjoying the music in all the public rooms and all were very busy. I tend to agree with the new trend to fewer large musical groups and more individual performers.
Day Seven--Saturday--at Sea
Another good nights sleep. We gained our hour back in time as the ship is now back on central standard time. I had my final breakfast in the Monet dining room with several from the Crazies group. I had fried eggs and they missed the pancakes I also ordered, but I was enjoying my company too much to complain. I walked around the ship and visited with friends this morning. The debarkation talk was held at 11:00 but it repeated over the TV continuously during the day. I had a hamburger from the grill for lunch and tried the hot dog. The burger and fries were good. The dessert station was a taco area today since it's Chocolate buffet day at the Taste of Nations area. I usually don't do the chocolate buffet. But I did get some banana fritters and added vanilla sauce. They were great. In the afternoon I had a good cabin day with NCAA football, some computer work, filing in debarkation documents, and a nap. Dinner this evening was again good, my choices were Crab Cake, Shrimp, Prime Rib, and the Grand Marnier Soufflé for desert. The Prime Rib was excellent. I didn't attend the Carnival Legends Show after dinner as I returned to the cabin to pack.
Debarkation--Sunday
They had a 7:00 am. priority meeting time for self-debarkation Platinum members. I was off the ship about 7:05 am. And one of the first through customs at 7:10 and at the truck by 7:20 am. It could not have gone smoother. I filled the truck in Galveston as usual ($2.16 gal.) and was off the island by 7:45 am. I stopped at the new Ama's in Hearne, Texas for migas and was home at 12:15 p.m.
Galveston
Galveston is looking very good and seems to be adjusting very well since the havoc of hurricane Ike last year. Having just sailed from New Oleans last month I would say that Galveston has done a much better job in reconstruction and restoration.
Ship / Crew
I have always thought that the Conquest is beautiful. The French impressionist and post-impressionist themes are wonderful. Try to see the video featuring Joe Farcus, the designer of the Conquest, on the ships TV while on board. The crew is very friendly and will greet you. The cabin steward and waiter will call you by name.
Food
The Cezanne Restaurant buffet food is good, but not great although the salads, fruit, and desserts are excellent. Paul's Deli was good, the Reuben sandwich is my favorite as well as the Turkey Wrap. PC's Wok has been replaced by the Mongolian Grill and is excellent. Sur Mer was good, my favorite item is the bouillabaisse. The Pizza Station was very good as was the Sky Grill both located on Lido deck aft. Room Service was very good and they have added several new sandwiches. My favorites were the Reuben and BLT's. Yes, you can now get a Reuben from room service. The Monet Dining Room food is very good to excellent and much better than the buffet. They have introduced a new menu this week. No major entrée changes, but a few small ones. I didn't try the Sushi Bar this trip, but it has been very good in the past. There are ice cream and yogurt machines in several locations on Lido deck. Drink prices have again gone up in cost but they have specials each day.
Cabin
I had cabin 2217 on Main deck (deck 2). It is located forward on starboard side and is a 1A with two portholes. There is only one bed on the floor so there is a lot of floor space. Perfect cabin for a solo cruiser. There is a mini bar, safe (card slide), large sofa (probably will make a second bed), no chair, and lots of storage. The cabin was clean and was maintained by cabin steward Garry who did a good job during the week and did a fair job with my ice. I did get a towel animal each night. A long walk to the dining room, but that's good for you.
Interesting / Unique
Cruising with Crazie group was fun. I DO enjoy my 'personal' time yet there was always someone around to visit with when wanted. A great addition is a magician that will entertain you in the dining room at your table. The magician was wonderful and a good addition. The new Seaside Theater is wonderful. It look like it was always a part of the ship and not an add-on. They did a wonderful job during the last dry dock installing it. The movies at night were very popular. My contrarian tip is to use the pool before dinner when most are away, I noticed very few guests there around 6:00 pm.
Changes / Needs Improvement
My complements to Marvin Barrantes who seems to have ironed out the small concerns I had about the Conquest from my previous cruise. There's never a perfect cruise, but this one was almost a perfect cruise. I know that the Conquest has been the highest rated ship in the Carival fleet for 21 consecutive weeks for customer satisfaction.
Final
Another great and enjoyable cruise. You really can not go wrong with the Carnival Conquest. You will have FUN on this Fun Ship.

Review - M/S Holiday - August 20, 2009
This was the second leg of two late booked short cruises simply because of the good value on the cruise fare and I wanted to sail the Holiday before she is retired. This was my 17th Carnival cruise, first cruise on the Holiday, and first cruise from Mobile.
Just The Facts:
Ship: Holiday
Date: August 20-24
Captain: Sergio Tommasi
Cruise Director: Tory Secoy
Ports: Mobile - Cozumel - Mobile
Weather: Good all week, light rain on occasion.
Wednesday / Travel / Day 0
Leaving from New Orleans, Louisiana it is an easy two and a half hour drive to Mobile. I had a great lunch in Biloxi at the Old French House a famous restaurant located in the oldest house on the Gulf coast.
Thursday / Embarkation / Day 1.
The ship sails from the Alabama Ship Terminal in Mobile (photo above). I had a great view of the ship from the 20th floor of my downtown hotel. I’ve booked a cruise special that includes cruise parking along with the room. I took the hotel shuttle at 11:00 am over to the cruise terminal and proceeded to VIP desk. I had perfect timing and was sent directly on board before the other passengers had boarded. I went directly to the Lido deck and it was only 11:23 a.m. I think that is as smooth a embarkation as I have ever had on any cruise. Well as fast as embarkation went I was able to do something I do enjoy: First through the buffet line. They don’t have the room as many ships for a formal presentation or display, but the presentation of the food itself looked good. I’m not keen on outside cuts, but having the first of the roast beef at the carving station it was a given, but it was excellent. The salads and desserts were very good as well. This could be a very good sign for food on the cruise. It was Italian day on the Taste of Nations section of the buffet. I waited on deck until the cabins became available at 1:30 p.m. I dropped my roll on bag and I met my cabin steward Jesus. I took my first nap but I was awake for the first announcements of muster drill which was held about 4:00 pm. Checked bag came in good order, they seem to distribute the luggage well even better than in NOLA. We sailed about 4:30 p.m. I did get a DoD (drink of the day), the Funship Special, and watched us sail through Mobile Bay. Another thing that was nice was that the production singers and ship orchestra played on the Lido deck from about 5:00 - 6:00. Nice to see the main cast being involved more in ship activities. I have the 8:15 setting in the Four Winds Dining Room. The waiter is Francis from the Philippines. The assistant is Myra from Belorussia. I had the Fried Shrimp, Green Salad, Pork Chop, Fruit Plate and the Black Forest Gateau for dessert. The Pork Chop was very good. Service was very prompt and the dinner was good. I have a great ten top table with two solo guys (including myself) and three pairs of very nice young ladies. You never know who your table mates may be especially on a solo cruise and I have a very good table. The Welcome Show was at 10:30 with CD Tory Secoy and comedian Diane Ford. She was very funny and some jokes were on the adult side so her late show must be something. No dancers or singers, but a nice show. I then retired to the cabin and Jesus left a towel animal on the first night.
Friday / At Sea / Day 2
The sea is very smooth and beautiful today. Hopefully the start of another week of very calm seas. I always eat in the dining room for 1st breakfast and order the same item as previous Carnival cruises and by doing so I get a feel for the food for the rest of the cruise. I was there about 8:30 am and had Grapefruit sections, Tomato Juice, Milk, Eggs Benedict with bacon & hash browns. It was very good, the eggs a little over cooked. Today is a beautiful day so all the lido deck activities are going well even though the swimming pool is as small as I remember ever seeing on a cruise ship. Amazing what was considered state of the art 25 years ago is so outdated today. I had a nice walk on deck and then had a nice salad and a selection of desserts from the Wharf buffet. The Key Lime pie was the best. Again watched a few Lido deck activities and watched a good movie in the cabin. In the early evening Petit-fours were delivered to the cabin as a part of the Platinum benefits. To be honest in the past they have been dry and nothing special; however, on the Holiday they were very different. It was the same standard petit-fours however theses were freshly made and tasted good. As there are fewer Platinum guests that sail on the Holiday it may be that they have the time to make them properly. Certainly a lesson for other ships. This evening is Elegant Night. I didn’t attend the Captains Party as I wanted to try the martini drink special located at the Bus Stop Bar on Lido deck from the bus itself. You can sample four small martinis from a list of about eight for $10. Dinner was excellent and I ordered my favorites. I had the Stuffed Mushrooms, Pumpkin Soup, Strawberry Bisque, Seafood Platter (Lobster & Shrimp), and Bitter & Blanc for dessert. All very good. The production show, Shout, was after dinner. It's a very good show featuring songs from the 50’s - 80’s. The singers and dancers were great.
Saturday / Cozumel Mexico / Day 3
Weather was hot, but very beautiful all day with a breeze. Arrived in Cozumel about 8:00 a.m. and docked at the International pier. I was in no rush as I didn’t have a lot planned for the day. I began with a good breakfast in the Seven Seas dining room and left the ship about 9:30 am. I took a taxi into San Migel and visited with Nelly at her Mayan Pearl shop. She informed me of the local news and politics. As I travel there so often I try to keep current on what is happening on the island. I went by Antonio’s barber shop just after 10:00 and they were not yet open so I spent almost an hour next door at the computer center checking some email ($1 per hour for internet connection). Martin opened and I got another great haircut. I had a Bohemia beer across the street after my haircut just trying to stay cool. I looked around and noticed some new shops, but also a lot of shops are closed. It’s is tough times right now for business. I did buy a shirt and I did stock up on some items from the drug store. I did have some chips and guacamole at Casa Denis, the oldest place in Cozumel. I decided to head back to the ship early and did so. Cab fare seems to have increased by one dollar since my last visit. It’s now $7 from downtown to the piers. I was back just in time to sample the desserts in the Wharf grill. The Tiramisu Cheesecake was best. Sail away from Cozumel was nice and we left on time at 5:00 pm. I went to see the feature singers Justin Sassanella & Tiffany Thompson and the orchestra that played live for dancing in the Americana Lounge. Tiffany is a petite blonde from Louisiana that really can sing. Very impressed. Dinner was very good and our entire table showed even though it was Cozumel day. We do have a fun table. For dinner I had the Fruit plate, Green Salad and as an entree two fried Shrimp with sweet & sour sauce. Dessert was Tiramisu. This is Deck Party night with the Mexican buffet. Also Magic with Tony Albano and comedian Hank Mcgauley in the Americana Lounge (theater).
Sunday / At Sea / Day 4
A little overcast very early, but it turned into another beautiful day. Another breakfast in the dining room and it has been very good all week. I did a little walk along the decks and looked at the shops just a bit. I did buy a $10 watch. The one I bought five years ago on the Elation still works, but I probably need a spare. Lunch was from the the Wharf deli station, a turkey wrap. People are taking advantage of the good weather and the decks are full. I did the galley tour in the afternoon and it was interesting. I also purchased some rum from the gift shop. The production show time for late dinner seating was before dinner and I was able to get a good seat on row three. Xtreme Country is a great show and I highly recommend attending although I like the finale of the Xtreme Country show on the Ecstasy better than this one. Still the singers and dancers did a great job and were very entertaining. Final dinner was good. I had the Pasta, French Onion soup, and short ribs with horseradish. The desert was Baked Alaska and a fruit plate for me. After dinner and some time of visiting with new friends I made my farewells to the waiters and table mates and I went back to the cabin to pack.
Debarkation
We arrived back in Mobile on time. I’m using self debarkation and priority meets at 7:45 am so I’m around early and it’s good as there is a problem with the bill. Seems I was charged for the premium reserve Captain Morgan rum and not the regular spiced rum. Be sure to check your invoices and billings carefully, I should have noticed when I signed the purchase slip, but at least noticed on the final statement. I got that sorted out and had a nice early final breakfast in the dining room. I did leave the ship before 8:00 am and I went through customs and was on the street within minutes. The hotel shuttle picked me up and I was dropped at my car by 8:15 a.m. You really can’t expect any better than that for a debarkation. I did a power drive back to Texas stopping only at McKenzie’s BBQ in Conroe and was home at 7:30 pm.
Cabin.
I have cabin U197 a 1A aft center on U (upper) deck six. It has an upper lower berth, plenty of storage especially for a solo. Nicer chair than on the 6C cabin of the Fantasy, nice simple safe, and ample storage. No refrigerator or hair dryer. You do feel the vibration and cavitation when changing speeds. Really only bad when departing or arriving in ports. It was worse during the final few hours before arriving back in Mobile. Cabin steward was Jesus and he did a good job keeping the cabin clean.
Food
I thought the food was good to very good in the dining room. The deli sandwiches are very good as is the salad bar and desert station in the Wharf. I didn’t try the pizza or use room service. Although a smaller ship she offered everything that the larger ships offer in the food area. I thought the Bar Service was good.
Ship / Crew
The Holiday is both the oldest and smallest ship in the Carnival fleet and it reminded me of cruise ships I sailed years ago. Little things such as the equipment (hoists) for the bow lines are visible on deck, your up close and personal with the life boats, small swimming pool, small elevators, etc. She is very clean and well maintained. You really don’t see the brass trim and railings that the Holiday has on her on the newer ships. Being a small ship I thought that the crew seemed tighter and greeted each other as well as the guests. Much easier to know everyone on a smaller ship. The catch phrase of the CD Tory is Woo Hoo. I like it. I didn’t participate in any trivia or bingo but the hospitably staff seemed fun.
Another very enjoyable cruise.

Review - Carnival Fantasy - August 13, 2009
This was a late booked short cruise simply because of the good value on the cruise fare and in combination with the Holiday cruise following. This was my 16th Carnival cruise and third cruise on the Fantasy.
Just The Facts:
Ship: Carnival Fantasy
Date: August 13-16
Captain: Cladio Cargiolli
Cruise Director: Risa Barnes
Ports: New Orleans - Cozumel - New Orleans
Weather: Good all week
Wednesday / Travel / Day 0
Driving to Louisiana as this is a two cruise and NOLA combination trip. I'm also not that keen on flying. I left the ranch about 10:00 a.m. and first stop was McKenzie's BBQ in Conroe for lunch. Very good BBQ. A pleasant nine hour drive with a stop for dinner at Pat's in Henderson, LA. Pat's is really famous for cajun food and the crawfish platter was wonderful. Not a bad drive and a change from sailing from Galveston.
Thursday / Embarkation / Day 1
The ship sails from the Julia Street wharf in New Orleans. If driving there is really only one parking option, the official port parking garage ($12 day). They do have porters in the parking garage to take your luggage so you do not have to drop off bags and then park. Check in at the terminal was fine, but that was because of the VIP status. There were long lines otherwise which luckily was avoided and I was on board the ship about 1:00 pm. I dropped my carry-on bag in the cabin and went to the Lido deck for lunch. Since the Mongolian Grill had not been discovered and there was no line as yet I had a bowl of the shrimp grill with the hot Szechwan sauce. Very spicy and very good. After the shrimp bowl I had a Reuben Sandwich as there was no one in that line either. Two of the better items on board and I had both at the first lunch. It was Cajun day on the Taste of Nations for those enjoying the buffet. I met my cabin steward, Fiji and he seems very nice. I was going to buy a “Drink of the Day” card, but that has been discontinued. I guess that didn't work as well as expected. I did get a DoD, the Funship Special. I met friends who had sailed on the Fantasy in February on the Bloggers cruise. It is nice to sail with people you have sailed with previously. Checked bag came in good order, they seem to distribute the luggage well. Muster drill was about 4:00 pm. We sailed about 4:30 p.m. and I watched from the hot tub and lounge chairs of the adult only Serenity Deck located on the aft of the ship on Lido deck. They had an attendant that enforced the no smoking and adult-only policy, but there were no bar servers. As this deck has become more popular they have missed a need and opportunity. There was more day light than the last time I had sailed out of New Orleans so it was interesting sailing down river. I have the 8:15 setting in the Celebration Dining room. The waiter is Geme and he also serves as the wine steward. I had the Tiger Shrimp, Green Salad, Pork Chop, Tilapia, and the Black Forest Gateau for dessert. The Pork Chop was very good. Service was a bit slow but the dinner was good. The welcome show was at 10:30, but I just retired to the cabin for some rest. Fiji left a surprise towel animal on the first night that was nice. The cabin TV wasn't working well so I soon retired.
Friday / At Sea / Day 2
The sea is very smooth and beautiful today. I always eat in the dining room for 1st breakfast and order the same item as previous Carnival cruises and by doing so I get a feel for the food for the rest of the cruise. I was there about 8:15 am and had Grapefruit sections, Tomato Juice, Milk, Eggs Benedict with bacon & hash browns. It was very good, the eggs cooked perfectly. Today is a beautiful day so all the lido deck activities are going well. I had a nice walk on deck and took in some of the activities. For lunch I again went to the Mongolian Grill. I had a Pork & Chicken combo (Mussels was the third choice) bowl and it was very good. I had a selection of desserts from the Windows on the Sea buffet. The Pumpkin Cake was the best. Again watched a few Lido deck activities and I even did the water slide that is very good for a cool down. I had my first visit to my HQ, the Atrium Bar. Isabella was still there from my February cruise. Albert is my favorite bartender this cruise. This evening is Elegant Night the new name for 'formal night'. I went to the Captains Party and yes they still have complementary cocktails. Dinner was excellent. I had the Stuffed Mushrooms, Pumpkin Soup, Strawberry Bisque, Seafood Platter (Lobster & Shrimp), and Bitter & Blanc for dessert. All very good. The production show, Nightclub Express, was after dinner. It's a very good show, but I skipped having already seen it and the fact the theater was very full by the time I got there after dinner. They repaired the TV sometime during the day so a walk around deck and then retired to the cabin for some TV movie time.
Saturday / Cozumel Mexico / Day 3
Weather was warm, but very beautiful all day. Arrived in Cozumel about 8:00 a.m. and docked at the Puerto Maya pier. I began the day with a good breakfast in dining room and then prepared for a special excursion. I'm going around the island on the Cozumel Bar Hop tour. Some new cruise friends are also going and I want to see if this would be a good tour for the CruiseMates Snooze Cruise in January. Since there were only four we didn't have a bus but had a taxi van for the tour driven by Gerry. He picked us up at the pier and we met our guide/host Greg in San Migel. We proceeded around the island first along the cross island road and to our first stop at Punta Morena. They offered us their specialty drink that was Xtabentun Mayan liquor & pineapple. I took a quick dip in the Caribbean before departing. The second stop was at the Cozumel icon Coconuts located on the highest point (40') on the island. We got a table with a great view and enjoyed our cocktail and beer. Since there were only four on the tour we decided to customize our stops and cut down on the bar times a bit and add the beach. Since Hurricane Wilma hit Cozumel a new beach had formed on the 'wild side' that is fantastic. Usually one has to get beyond the reef or rock to get into nice water but here you just proceed directly into the water. It is primitive location, but they have added a life guard station and now a bar, El Galeon, has set up across the road. I believe the name of the beach itself is St. Martin. It is much better than Playa Bonita my previous favorite. After swimming at the beach our next stop was the Rasta Bar also a Cozumel icon. Here we had their specialty, a Green Lizard cocktail shooter. I had shrimp quesadillas for lunch and enjoyed a beer or two. Next stop was Paradise Beach which is a resort beach location that I am very familiar with from many previous visits. Here the specialty drink they commonly call 'windex' as that what is looks like. Hopefully it is a blend of tequila and blue curaso. They very generous here with the drink. Although here you can get blended or specialty cocktails here I stuck with the beer. The final stop of the tour is Margaritaville. Here we have a tequila shooter and I sampled several Pacifico beers. Here we also met PB Tom the tour operator and discussed the January tour. After experiencing it first hand I consider it a done deal, and we will add the beach location. The tour is a great way to explore the 'wild side' of Cozumel and enjoy interesting locations as a 'traveling party” as well. We took a taxi back to the pier. Usually I like to get back a bit early to the ship to watch the late arrivals stagger back. This time I may have been in the later group. The Carnival Ecstasy was docked next to us and she looked great. After returning to the cabin and a nice shower I lay down for a nap before dinner. Of course I over slept, which is common on Cozumel day of a cruise, but rare for me. I survived on the complementary petit-fours they delivered to the cabin. The evening show was comedian Brad Tassel and vocalist Yolanda Barber. They also had a deck party and late buffet on Lido deck. I missed them, but it looked great later on the ship television.
Sunday / At Sea / Day 4
A little overcast early, but it turned into another beautiful day. Final breakfast in dining room and it has been very good all week. I did a little computer work in the cabin and looked at the shops just a bit. Lunch again was the Mongolian Grill. It was again very good. They set up a sundaes station in the buffet. It was different and good as well. I took a little nap in the cabin and then snuck back to the deli for a Turkey wrap and a Pastrami on rye. I looked at the shops on board and did some people watching from the Lobby Bar. Final dinner was just OK. I had the Pasta, French Onion soup, and Flat-iron Steak. The desert was Baked Alaska. After dinner I was able to get a good seat for the feature production show, Ticket To Ride. It is a great show and I highly recommend attending. After the show, a little after 11:30 pm I went back to the cabin to pack. I discovered that when they say have your bag out in the passageway by midnight that they mean it. I had it out as soon as I could, but it was still there the next morning.
Debarkation
We arrived back in New Orleans on time. I was in no rush even with having both bags as I planned to leave with the later VIP group anyway. I had a breakfast on lido deck by the pool while waiting for the Self debarking passengers to get off. Somewhere during this time they ran into problems with immigration and debarkation was delayed. They did not finish the self debarkation until almost 10:00 am. I finally got to US Customs about 10:15 and I was in the first group to leave.
Cabin.
I had cabin U33 an Ocean view on U (upper) deck six forward starboard side. Flat screen TV (no a/v hookups), refurbished bath, safe, queen or twin bed set-up and very clean. No refrigerator or hair dryer. Cabin steward was Fiji and he did a good job with the cabin and keeping the ice my small cooler filled.
Food.
I was impressed with the enforcement of the no-hat rule in the dining room at breakfast. They really should make the dining room a special place even in the mornings and at lunch. However I did see one man in a T-shirt, blue jeans, and flip flops in the dining room on elegant evening. Overall I thought the food was good to very good in the dining room. The deli sandwiches are very good as is the salad bar and desert station in the Window's on the Sea Bar and Grill. I thought the Bar Service was excellent. Friendly bartenders and cocktail waiters. Always seemed willing to help with special requests and were always willing to serve.
Ship / Comments
Very clean and well maintained. This was one of the smoothest cruises I have ever sailed. There was never any pitch or roll and the sea was very calm. Overall another great cruise. I met some folks that I had sailed with previously and met some new friends.

Review--Mariner of the Seas--6.14.2009
Just The Facts:
Ship: Mariner of the Seas
Date: June 14-June 21, 2009
Captain: Johnny Faevelen
Cruise Director: Abe Hughes
Ports: Los Angeles – San Francisco - Victoria - Seattle - Los Angeles Weather: Good all week
I am cruising as a solo and this was my 12th Royal Caribbean cruise, 51st overall cruise, and 1st cruise on the Mariner of the Seas. I am attending a Seminar at Sea presented by Royal Caribbean while aboard. I’m also participating in a Whodunit Production Murder Mystery that is a bit different, it’s not just one night, but over the course of the entire cruise.
Day One--Sunday—Embarkation
This is different for me in that I am both flying to a cruise AND flying into port on the day of the cruise. It’s always safest to fly in a day early in case of potential problems, but the air transfers work well for embarking on the west coast due to the time gained. The day started at 3:45 a.m. on the ranch with last minute details, loading the truck, etc. and I got away heading to the Waco Regional Airport about 4:20 a.m. It’s about an hour drive and by the time I parked in the remote parking (free) and made the terminal they were already screening passengers for the 5:45 am boarding. We pushed away right at 6:00 and were at DFW in just a few minutes. The connecting flight from DFW to SNA (Orange County-John Wayne) was 3+ hours and went well. I would have preferred to have flown into LAX or Long Beach, but I was using AA Advantage miles so had to use SNA. The shuttle was $50 to the San Pedro Cruise Terminal and that was a bit dear and more than expected. With the gaining of two hours that put me at the Terminal about 11:00 a.m and it was just about right for check-in and a short wait before actual boarding. No champagne as with the Voyager and Galveston embarkations. I recognized and spoke with John Joseph in the waiting area and was pleased to hear that he would be doing a show the following night. I was beginning to get hungry and realized that it had been 8 hours since that biscuit back on the ranch. The Diamond and Priority guests boarded about 11:30 and I headed to the Windjammer. I wasn’t really in a big hurry, but using the experienced cruiser routine (skipping photos, using back bank of elevators, etc.) actually ended up being the first in line at the Windjammer buffet. I always enjoy seeing the presentation of the food before the masses arrive. They had the usual RCCL first day buffet. The roast beef from the Carving Station was very good as were the salads and the desserts. Since I couldn’t bring cokes I did purchase a Coke Card. I’ll report on its use. It is $6 per day + 15% tip so almost $50 for an adult. It may keep me from buying too many of the drinks of the day.
I went to my cabin shortly before 1:00 p.m. when cabins become available to guests. I have cabin 2254 an ocean view forward on starboard side. It’s a large cabin very nice and clean and has a large porthole window. I bet I see waves! I was hoping to take a nap, but they are loading luggage just below my cabin and it’s interesting to see a forklift swing by the porthole window every ten minutes and a bit noisy. Won’t be a problem after sailing. The cabin is an ‘adjoining’ cabin and I’ve noticed the main difference is that you have a large padded chair and not the small sofa. The cabin set up is great for me as a solo.
Our first Whodunit meeting was this afternoon in the Dragon’s Lair lounge and we are all in a mob family with two major branches, the Rubys and the Sapphires. My character is Ray Ruby. So I am in the Ruby family. I met the new acting Don of the family, Jimmy the mouth Sapphire. This may be interesting. Muster Drill was scheduled for 4:15 and seemed to go smooth. My luggage didn’t arrive until 4:45 pm. so I unpacked and then went to the upper decks for sail away. We sailed a little late, about 5:30, and we sailed out the channel into the Pacific. We could see the Carnival Splendor sailing out of Long Beach. It was a nice sunny and mild day and you could see Santa Catalina Island. I didn’t attend the Welcome Show as I attended a reception for the Seminar at Sea group in the Cloud Nine lounge. The cocktails were complementary so I had two very nice mojitos since we were on the Viking Crown level and that is one of their specialty drinks. That was very nice, thank you, Royal Caribbean. Dinner was 15 minutes later than scheduled as is common on embarkation day. Most Seminar attendees are all at the same table and area in the Top Hat and Tails dining room. I had the Vidalia onion tart and Tomatillo (spicy) soup. I also had the Prime Rib (with fresh horseradish) as an entree and Savrin for desert. After a LONG busy day and dinner I retired to the cabin for the evening.
Day Two--Monday--at Sea / San Francisco
I slept very well and hopefully now I am acclimated to Pacific standard time. The starboard side is great as from my large porthole window I can see the California coast as we sail north. I had a very nice breakfast in the Rhapsody at Sea (main) dining room. Chocolate chip pancakes was the special, but I had Eggs Benedict. After breakfast I checked on getting tickets for the Ice Skating Show, but I was told they didn’t use the ticket system, you just show up at the performance. That could be good or bad, we’ll see. It’s a mostly cloudy day and chilly on deck. Some are using the hot tubs. I was lucky and I did see a whale this morning, but later we passed a large pod of whales and the Captain slowed so that many could see them. There was a Diamond family reunion at 11:00 am and I met the various members of the ‘family’ (Whodunit actors). It’s fun so far. I had a light lunch in the Windjammer. They had roast pork at the carving station and the specialty station. There was a wide selection of items in the buffet.
I have to admit crossing under the Golden Gate Bridge was a real highlight and a lot bigger deal than I originally thought it would be. I was on the center observation area above the Sky bar and it was a great spot as the forward tower/mast was ahead and it really looks like it would not clear as you approach. Of course she did, but by only 17 feet and this was at low tide. It is a very close fit. Just as we passed under the bridge the captain blew the ships horn and everyone cheered. A very unique experience. It took another hour plus to reach the dock and begin debarkation. I took my time as I wasn’t planning a tour and left the ship about 2:00 pm. I walked down to the original Fisherman’s Wharf and had a whole crab from the Fisherman's Grotto crab stand. It was great. Not near as many tourists in the original fishing piers behind the dockside restaurants. I remember taking a charter fishing boat out of there when I was a teenager. Most tourists now go to Pier 39 that has all the tourist places, shops, and chain restaurants. I did buy some beautiful Bing Cherries from a fruit stand and they were great. I returned to the ship about 4:30 for a nap. About 7:45 I went to the alternative Concierge lounge located in the Dragon’s Lair only one deck above my cabin for a pre-dinner glass of wine. Dinner tonight was at the usual 8:30 pm in the dining room. It was Italian night and I had the Scallops Risotto, Chicken Marsalla and Tiramisu for dessert. The waiters ended Italian night by singing O Solo Mio. After dinner I attended the John Joseph & Johnny B show in the Savoy theater. I really enjoyed it. I first saw John Joseph on the Splendour in 2006 as a solo. Very funny man and act.
Day Three—Tuesday—at Sea
Weather was cloudy & chilly and we can still the coast as we sail north. I had breakfast in the Rhapsody in Blue dining room. A very good breakfast: tomato juice, grapefruit, fried eggs, bacon, corned beef, hash brown potatoes, and toast. I activated an Internet program and caught up on some emails and business this morning. We had a meeting of the
Whodunit family at 12:30 and folks made arguments about who the next ‘Don’ should be. Following that a large group of us had lunch in the Windjammer. They had roast turkey on the carving station. I had the turkey, mashed potatoes, and a very nice salad. Following lunch I had a very nice nap. Petit-Fours and Chocolate Covered Strawberries were delivered to the cabin and they made for a nice snack following the nap. We had the Diamond Family ‘Gala’ in the theater at 6:45 when we discovered that Uncle Vinnie has now also died. Very entertaining except when I was a backup dancer for Lulu Von Tramp. This was formal night so I prepared for the Captains Cocktail reception that was held in the Grand Promenade. The Captains Dinner was very good and the dining room was at capacity this evening. Escargot, Shrimp Cocktail, Beef Filet, Sea Bass, and Grand Mariner Soufflé were my selections. The feature production show was after dinner this evening in the Savoy Theater was Front Row. The show is very enjoyable and featured various show tunes, popular tunes, and dance numbers.
Day Four--Wednesday—Victoria, British Columbia
It was very foggy in the early morning when I first looked out the porthole. We must be in Puget Sound as the water is smooth as glass. We are supposed to be docked about noon. I again had a very nice breakfast in the Rhapsody in Blue dining room then checked email from a Promenade deck WiFi hot spot. The Whodunit group had a memorial service for Uncle Nicky this morning. It was very good, the best event so far in the program.
We arrived at the pier in Victoria on time and docked next to the new Carnival Spendour. I met some friends and we went into downtown Victoria for a nice lunch on the inner harbor. We visited the Empress Hotel and the shops before returning to the ship. I took a nap before attending the Ice Under The Big Top show in Studio B. It was a fantastic show and we actually had a show within a show with two overly exuberant inebriated ladies on the front row. I don’t know how they kept from falling over the rail onto the ice. Dinner was again good, I had Shrimp & Crab Salad, Jalepeno Potato Soup, Black Angus Steak, Tilapia, and BBB for desert. The BBB was a new dessert consisting of bananas and Baily’s Irish crème made into a brule. The Love and Marriage game show hosted by Abe was this evening in the Savoy Theater, but I had some cabin time and watched a movie after dinner.
Day Five--Thursday—Seattle
We docked very early this morning and it was a cloudy day, but the weather improved over the day. I had breakfast in the Windjammer and caught up on emails in the morning before leaving the ship. We are docked at pier 66 and it is very convenient for downtown and especially the Pike Street Market. I really enjoyed watching the famous fish market area where they throw the fish as it’s ordered. Very interesting and good teamwork by the fish mongers. I had to buy some Mt. Rainier cherries and they were excellent. I returned to the ship in early afternoon and had lunch in the Windjammer. They had lamb on the carving station, but I had a very nice salad. I watched the Love & Marriage show on the cabin TV this afternoon and took a nap. I watched the sail away and then we had our final Whodunit gathering. I submitted my guess as to the murderer, but was off base. I’m sure they have several alternative endings. The actors were all very good. And it was a very enjoyable experience. I spent some time in the Concierge lounge. They have very nice snacks in addition to the cocktails. LaRaf was the headline showcase, but I have seen them several time on the Voyager so only watched the first act then returned to the Concierge lounge to visit with friends. Dinner was again good, I had the Maryland Crab Cake, Soup, Grilled double sliced Pork Steak and the mango parfait for dessert. This evening the Quest was held in Studio B, but I watched Matt Yee’s show in the Schooner Bar. He was very entertaining and really gets the audience into the show. Now being late I retired to the cabin.
Day Six--Friday—at Sea
It is a cloudy & windy day today. The Captain is not hugging the coast line on the return and we are experiencing some high Pacific waves. I am getting spray on my porthole window so it’s a nice ride. I had another good breakfast in the dining room. I enjoy the service of the dining room especially on sea days when we have plenty of time. After breakfast I again checked email and news on the Internet. Having a satellite system in the country I understand why the system may be slower on cloudy days at sea. The ISP system on board ship is very similar. I walked around the ship and then had an early light lunch in the Windjammer. They had corned beef on the carving station. I watched a movie on the cabin TV and later went to hear the Mariner of the Seas orchestra play jazz on the promenade from the Wig & Gavel. They had a nice cocktail reception for the Whodunit participants and cast in the early evening. It was interesting seeing the actors not in character. The Captains C&A past guest reception for Platinum & Diamond guests was also this evening so it was very busy. Tonight is the second formal evening and dinner was again good. My selections were a Garden Salad, the Fisherman’s Platter (Lobster & shrimp) and the assorted dessert selection. The second production show for our cruise was after dinner. The show was Pure Energy featuring the Mariner Singers and Dancers in a 1980’s style review show featuring popular songs from that era. It was an excellent show and not to be missed. Following the show several of us caught Matt Yee’s adult version of his Divas Live show. After a very long evening I retired to the cabin
Day Seven--at Sea
Very pleasant and sunny weather this morning, probably the best weather of the cruise. I slept in a little bit this morning as it was a late night. I did have a 10:00 a.m. seminar to attend as a part of the Seminar@Sea program. The Whodunit folks discussed the group aspects of this type group on board ship. After business I ate in the MDR (main dining room) for the first time for lunch. It was wonderful. They have a build your own salad bar where you choose the ingredients and items in want in your salad. They then add your choice of dressing and crush/cut the salad for you and viola a wonderful chilled salad just as you like it. I also ordered the open face steak sandwich that is served with fried eggs and on a thick slice of bread. If you wait until after 3:00 pm on the final sea day and purchase liquor from the General Store you can take it with you to your cabin. Passengers really enjoyed the pool deck this afternoon. There was an Enchanted Knights Parade in the Promenade, nice to see it earlier in the day. Last visit to the Concierge lounge before dinner. It has been enjoyable having a location to meet other past guests. Dinner was again very good. I had the Cesar salad, New York Strip Steak, French Onion Soup, and Key Lime Pie for dessert. All selections were very good.
Debarkation--Sunday
I was up early and as mentioned there is a gangway below my cabin so I knew we had arrived back at San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles. No room service on debarkation morning, but a full breakfast menu in the dining room so I took advantage of that very early. They use the new debarkation system that works very well. No general announcements, only announcements to the individual debarkation stations. I left the ship about 8:30 and since our last port was in the USA customs was a breeze. I actually got a shuttle right away and was off to John Wayne Airport. I wanted to arrive early as there was a mix up with my air tickets, so I had a nice wait before beginning the journey. I arrived back in Waco at 9:30 Texas time and it was an hour drive back to the ranch. I’m not keen on air travel, but this cruise was worth the effort.
Ship
This was my 5th time on a Voyager class ship. I am still very impressed with these magnificent vessels. I know the people on the West Coast are happy to now have a Voyager Class ship available to them for cruises. There are good and bad things about the size. The elevators can be busy or full and I recommend taking the stairs when possible. The additional size also means that there is room for the photo gallery, casino, bars, etc. without any one of them dominating an entire deck. The Grand Promenade is very impressive indeed and must be experienced. One difference is that they have a wine bar on the promenade where the Voyager has a sports bar. The ship was very clean and the public rooms were always spotless. I noticed a new sign in the elevator, No children under age 11 without a parent. They also have their alcohol policy prominently displayed (drinking age is 21) at every bar and lounge. The theme of the casino is State Fair. I love the dining room and the chandelier, but I don’t believe the chandelier on the Mariner to be near as large as the one on the Voyager. That’s an observation I’d like confirmed just to satisfy my curiosity.
Crew
The staff and crew are very good and very friendly. Captain Johnny made his daily announcements around noon each day and kept us informed of the weather and activities. He was also seen out and about on the ship and had a Q&A session on the last sea day. I thought all the crew were very nice and greeted guests very well.
Cabin
I have cabin 2254 a Ocean View on deck two forward starboard side. There is little noise as it’s on a deck with few cabins and little activity. As mentioned there is noise at embarkation and debarkation but that is fine as your not really using your cabin at those times. The cabin steward was good and the cabin is clean. As mentioned the cabin is an ‘adjoining’ cabin and I’ve noticed the main difference is that you have a large padded chair and not the small sofa. That actually allows more floor space and I never noticed any noise from the other cabin. The safe has a button keypad. The air conditioning worked very well. You can check the status of your on board account using the RC-TV. The cabin refrigerator was well stocked, but I never used it. I had a nice towel animals most nights. I would have no problem staying in this cabin or location again.
Food
I had second or late seating for dinner. Our dining room, Top Hat & Tails, was the deck four (middle level) of the three level restaurant. It was a ten top table with others participating in the Whodunit show and the seminar. A wonderful collection of table mates. Our waiter, Denise from Romania, was very good and called me by name each evening. Lunch in the dining room has the same menu each day with one special item that does change daily. The new salad bar is wonderful. The Windjammer had a daily pasta bar and a carving station for nice meat selections. I enjoyed the green salads and specialty items. All the bread selections are very good on board. The desserts are very good in both the Windjammer and the dining room. There are several ice cream machines with vanilla, and chocolate flavors. I do not use Room Service as much when I don’t have a balcony cabin, but the assorted fruits and cheese plate are my still my favorite items. You can order room service on the RC-TV, but I recommend calling room service. Service was good when used.
Weather
The weather was primarily cool & cloudy especially in the mornings, but most afternoons cleared with sun. Very enjoyable weather especially if you were looking for relief from heat.
Diamond Value Booklet
The new C&A Diamond booklets are now out and were used on this cruise. Basically there are no benefits for the returning guests, only incentives to purchase at a discount. The only coupon I used was $10 off on purchasing internet service and it wasn’t properly credited. Missing are anything that was free on it’s own, i.e. Johnny Rockets cover charge coupon, free drink coupons, etc.
Cruise Highlights
I really enjoyed the Whodunit Productions murder mystery program. The program was very entertaining and the camaraderie of those in your group was wonderful. The Ice Under the Big Top and the two productions shows, Pure Energy and Front Row, featuring the Mariner Singers and Dancers were very good. The Schooner bar with Matt Yee was very popular with the passengers. My favorite port this cruise was Victoria.
Comments
This was a great cruise for me as I received a very fair single supplement fee and experienced a new ship and new ports. I also got to experience the Whodunit Mystery experience that was unique and enjoyable. I really enjoyed the Diamond Concierge lounge and hope future changes don’t diminish that experience. Overall a VERY GOOD cruise.

Carnival Sunday Funday
Carnival Cruise Lines held a series of Sunday Funday parties nationwide on Sunday March 29, 2009. We were one of the 1002 households selected. Not sure why we were selected, but we fit the criteria and I was also on the Carnival Bloggers cruise in February where it was first announced.
We began the day doing party preparation. First the decorations that was in the party kit sent to us from House Party who organized the events for Carnival. We also found a use for all those Carnival hurricane glasses we have collected over the years. We made a nice centerpiece from the Carnival balloons and put banners on the kitchen island which was designated as ‘party central’ in the house. We then began preparing meat trays, vegetable trays, cheese & fruit trays, desserts, and dipping strawberries in chocolate. All of that kept us very busy. I made two gallons of Funship Special cocktails and finished party preps and last minute cleaning before our 6:00 pm starting time. We prepared a very nice selection of party foods and drinks:
Everyone really enjoyed the excellent food and drinks. The instructions for a towel animal contest was missing or I never found them, but a couple attempted some basic designs. Most guests were neighbors or people who have sailed or about to sail on Carnival. The company and conversation was very good and everyone was in a party mood.

Funship Specials
Shiner Bock,
Captain Morgan’s Parrott Bay Tropical drinks
Roll ups with crème cheese and pico de gallo
Roast Beef, Ham, Turkey, Turkey summer sausage

Review--Carnival Fantasy--2.7.2009

Blog2NOLA Cruise / Fantasy Review 2.7.2009
Just The Facts:
Carnival Fantasy
February 5-12, 2008
Captain: Pier Paolo Scala
Cruise Director: Big Tex
Special Blogger Cruise Director: John Heald
Hotel Director: Andy Brown
Ports: New Orleans-Progreso-Cozumel-New Orleans
Weather: Very Good all week.
This is the John Heald Bloggers Cruise for fans of John Heald, the Senior Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Lines and his very popular Cruise Blog. I am sailing with the CruiseMates Blog2NOLA group. This is my 14th Carnival cruise and 49th cruise overall. I am also sailing as a solo.
Travel Day--Thursday
I rarely fly to a cruise anymore so this was a little different for me. I flew American Airlines from Waco to DFW for a flight to New Orleans. I was wearing a Blog2NOLA group T-shirt so I was spotted by others in our group who were on the same flight to New Orleans. The flight was delayed almost two hours so we did have some time to visit. Once in the air the flight was fine and we were greeted at the baggage claim area by a New Orleans style brass band. I was able to share a taxi/van from the airport to downtown NOLA with my new BFFW’s. My hotel is the Maison St. Charles and it is nice in the fact that it is a quaint New Orleans style hotel and not a mega-convention type of hotel. It is a bit further from the hot spots but on a street car line. A lot of the early arrivals in the CruiseMates group met at the Hard Rock Café and some explored Bourbon Street and the famous hurricanes from Pat O’Briens. Unfortunately I was one of them.
New Orleans—Friday
I had originally planned on doing some volunteer work this morning, but due to some recent stress at the ranch and drinking the hurricanes the night before I thought it best I slept in this morning. I don’t want a bug before even boarding on the ship. Some friends attended the volunteer project sponsored by Carnival Cruise Line and it went well. I went for an early lunch at Mothers, a famous New Orleans spot, for a Ferdi special. It was fantastic and worth the effort to get it. After lunch I visited Jackson Square, The Cibolo and St. Louis Cathedral. I took an afternoon cruise on the The Natchez, a paddle wheeler on the Mississippi River. It was very interesting and informative especially the engine room. This evening the CruiseMates group met at Mulates for dinner and a good time. The band was La Touche a very good Cajun group. I had a pink lemonade and the Cajun Seafood Platter which was excellent. Our group of about 50 had good seats near the front and the band and everyone had a great time.
Day One--Saturday—Embarkation
It was a beautiful day in New Orleans. I took advantage of the fast internet connection in the courtyard of the hotel to update emails and news before heading for the ship. I shared a cab to the port ($7 set fee) and arrived about 11:15. A good arrival time as it was just behind the rush but earlier than most arrivals. There were a lot of VIPs for this boarding so the VIP check in line was as long if not longer than the regular check in line. I was on board by 11:45 or thereabouts. Since I brought the T-shirts for the CruiseMates group I helped at their check-in-table for a lot of the day before boat drill. The Captain came by and recognized me from previous cruises on the Ecstasy. I appreciated that very much. When I checked my cabin there was a “Welcome bottle of champagne and two plates of canapés. Very Nice. I did have lunch from the Taste of Nations station. It was Cajun Day and I had the Cajun Vegetable Soup, Corn Fritters, Spinach Cornbread, Chicken Creole, and grilled Fish Fillets, all very good. We set sail down river as boat drill ended about 4:15 p.m. I have never sailed down the Mississippi river and because of all the turns in the river it felt as though we were at sea. A lot more pitch and roll than I expected. There was a special cocktail reception for all the Blogger groups on board at 5:00 p.m. in the Universe Lounge, the main show lounge. They were very generous with the cocktails and John Heald made his first official appearance to the group. I have early seating for dinner so straight to dinner following. They have open seating for the Bloggers another new experience. I ordered the Fried Shrimp that was served with a very unique & tasty Plum dipping sauce, the Broccoli Soup, a Grilled Pork Chop served with vegetables and macaroni, and the Black Forest Gateau (cherry) for dessert. The Welcome Aboard Show was after dinner featuring Big Tex as a cruise director, and comedian Lewis Nixon. A Bloggers Pajama Party sponsored by CruiseMates was held in Cleopatra’s Piano Bar this evening. I’m sure the other passengers thought this had to be a crazy group walking around the ship in PJ’s. It was fun and there were probably 60+ who participated. John Heald made an appearance, judged the PJ’s and I actually got to meet him for the first time. He recognized my name from this humble blog of ours. Following the Pajama Party and all the first day activities I retired for the evening.
Day Two--Sunday--at Sea
I enjoyed a very refreshing nights sleep and the ship rocked just enough to make it very nice. Thanks Captain Scala. I had breakfast in the dining room, my personal standard 1st morning Carnival breakfast of: tomato juice (V8), a mixed fruit plate, Eggs Benedict with side of bacon, and milk. All were very good. After breakfast there was a Q&A session for the Bloggers with John Heald. During the comments, John expressed how important the port of Galveston is to Carnival. Even the possibility of a third Carnival ship. That’s positive news for Texas. I met Paul Motter of CruiseMates and Anita Dunham-Potter who writes several Travel Blogs. I later shared a table on the Promenade Deck with Anita who is very delightful and we shared information about cruising. It took me a minute to figure out that she was interviewing me in between our conversations. (Link to one of her blogs below) It was Italian day in the Tastes of Nations section. I did have a selection of items. The regular buffet featured roast turkey at the carving station. We had a special tea time with John Heald for CruiseMates at 2:00 pm. in the Celebration Dining Room. The tea was good and the scones were excellent. I spent some time at HQ and discovered a new option. The Fun Ship SPECIALS CARD is $23 but will get you one drink of the day and four additional drink specials. That will save you $8.75 and also gets you the drinks in a larger glass. Sounds like a good deal to me. Wish I had know before my initial Funship Special purchase at sail away. One can collect only so many of the souvenir cocktail glasses. The Captains cocktail reception was before dinner and I greeted the Captain, but only stayed for one glass of wine and left before the introductions. Dinner was very good. I had the pumpkin soup, the stuffed mushrooms, and the seafood entrée consisting of lobster and jumbo shrimp. The lobster was very good and the shrimp were excellent. I had the Bitter & Blanc for desert. The stuffed mushrooms are not as good as they were on the Conquest or Ecstasy. This is also the third variation of the Bitter & Blanc since they introduced it to the menu as part of the George Blanc signature dishes. Still good just different. The feature show was a production shows featuring the Fantasy singers and dancers Nightclub Express. It was very good and featured numbers from various nightclub venues such as: Cotton Club, the Copa, Capri, Crazy Horse, Tropicana, etc.. This production team just came on the ship last week and they were fresh and crisp. The show had excellent singing, dancing, costumes, and music. This show is not to be missed. I did think this production group of singers and dancers are as good as any I have seen on any cruise ship, kudos to them and their director. Some very nice canapés were delivered to the cabin this evening as a part of the Platinum ‘Concierge Club’ guest program. I also received a stainless steel thermos as a gift.
Day Three—Monday--Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico
Another very pleasant nights sleep. I heard people comment that they considered the seas ‘rocky’ last night, but to me it seemed fine. Captain Scala got the Fantasy into Progreso at our 7:00 scheduled arrival time. I had breakfast in the dining room: fresh sliced fruit, fried eggs with hash browns, bacon, & corned beef hash, toast, V8, and milk. I left the ship about 10:00 am and I took the free shuttle to town. I stopped at the Mayan craft store that DW loves (run by Richard) and purchased a bag I wanted for my computer cables and charger. The store has authentic crafts made by Mayans from Yucatan and Guatemala and a good place to get gifts. I saw friends and accompanied them to Buddy’s, but we moved to Le Saint Bonnet and I made that my HQ for the afternoon. We had a very nice table on the restaurant side and enjoyed a very nice breeze coming off of the Gulf of Mexico. The weather was beautiful. The best weather I have ever experienced here. Over the course of the day we were joined by fellow Bloggers from Cruise Critic and CruiseMates. I ordered a shrimp cocktail, and enjoyed their great guacamole & pico de gallo. I also purchased a few items from various vendors who passed. My favorite mariachi, Julio, approached and again recognized me from previous trips, he is the best if the many mariachi’s that play here. Progreso is probably the pirated DVD capital of Latin America. Charges for a DVD run about $3.00 on average per movie (a little less if you get more) and I again as on previous visits purchased a couple. I took the shuttle back to the ship and was onboard by 3:00 p.m. We sailed away at the scheduled departure time of 4:00 p.m. For those that stayed on board, it was Mexican day in the Tastes of Nations. We had the official group cocktail party for the CruiseMates group at 5:00 pm in the disco. It was a Pirate theme and everyone looked so great in their pirate costumes. It was great fun and attended by John Heald and other special guests as well. Dinner was again good. I had a green salad and two entrees, the Sweet & Sour Shrimp and the Chicken Breast, then Tirmasu for dessert. I really liked the shrimp and would do two of those at next opportunity. The Carnival Return Guest party was after dinner. A very unusual time, but perhaps because of all the extra activities this cruise. Big Tex and the Fantasy show band hosted the Guest Talent Show was this evening and it was very enjoyable. There were three CruiseMates / Evil Krewe group members of the six who performed. Big Tex did his five level dance routine and that was fantastic. At midnight they had a Men’s Nightgown contest (which from photos I’ve seen must have been hilarious), but I retired to the cabin after such a busy day.
Day Four--Tuesday--Cozumel, Mexico
Another good nights sleep. The sea was much calmer than the previous night and very nice as we sailed around the Yucatan peninsula and into the Caribbean. I had another good breakfast in the dining room We arrived and docked on time in Cozumel at the Puerto Maya pier. Another first for me on this cruise is that I have booked a ‘ships tour’, but really it’s the official Bloggers excursion for Cozumel. We met on the pier at 9:45 and were on our way to Playa Mia straightaway. We were met as we got off the bus with servers holding trays of drinks and given a quick orientation of Playa Mia. The package included mixed drinks, beer, a Mexican buffet, water toys, lounge chairs, swimming pool, ice crème, and more. The bar servers were very generous with the drinks and the food was good. The weather was ideal with a nice breeze to keep it cool. It was a great day in paradise. I had two dips in the cool Caribbean water, it was rocky as you first entered but fine and sandy just out a bit. I was very pleased with the tour, the resort of Playa Mia, and the great company. We returned to Puerto Maya about 3:00, but a group of us enjoyed some light snacks and cocktails at Poncho’s Backyard until time to board the ship at 4:30 pm.. It was Caribbean day in the Tastes of Nations section, another good choice. Dinner was again good, my selections were Escargot, Thai Chicken, Bing Cherry Soup, the Chateaubriand as an entree, and Grand Mariner Soufflé for desert. Our dinner ran late as there was a food problem in the kitchen and we barely got out before second seating began, but that took us to show time. The show was juggler Manuel Zuniga and comedian Al Ernst. Al has been ‘hanging’ with the Bloggers group all cruise and I was familiar with his act, but this was the first time to see him live. He is very funny. I’m not keen on the juggling. There was a special late show just for the Bloggers with John Heald, Al Ernst, and Lewis Nixon. They told stories about one another and reminisced about working together on Carnival years ago. It was very very funny. It was time for the Mexican buffet on Lido deck and it was a very nice set up on deck. The weather was wonderful and the band Music Manila played good rock cover tunes on the open deck. A long day. I checked emails late back in the cabin then retired.
Day Five—Wednesday--at sea
Another good night sleep and I had another very nice breakfast in the dining room. I attended most of the Q&A session for the invited press covering the Bloggers and the ‘new & improved’ Fantasy. I tried one of the hot tubs on the new Serenity Deck. The deck is adults only and located aft with a great view. It was American Day in the Taste of Nations so I had a bit of Salad, Fried Chicken and a baked potato. They had ham on the carving station. There was a scheduled competition at the water slides for CruiseMates at the new Evolutions of Fun water area. It is a fantastic area for families and people who want to have fun. Several slides and other nice water features. I retired to the cabin for a much needed little nap after the excitement of the past days. A Bloggers Talent Show was at 4:00 pm and we do have talented people in the group. John, Al, & Lewis also added to the entertainment. That was followed by the farewell Bloggers cocktail party at 5:00 with excellent hors d'oeuvres and generous cocktails. With early dinner at 6:00 a very busy evening. Dinner was good, I had the Crab Cake, Veal Parmesan, and Baked Alaska for desert. The feature production show was this evening, Ticket to Ride, a Beatle show featuring the Fantasy Singers and Dancers, Fantasy Orchestra, and the group Music Manila This is a fantastic show not to be missed. The last finale of the Bloggers cruise was a late comedy show. The Opening act was our own Kuki of CruiseMates making his comedy debut and featuring Al Ernst. A funny ending to a jammed packed five days of entertainment.
Debarkation --Thursday—New Orleans
Another good night sleep and we were docked very early in New Orleans. I went to the Windows on the Sea for a nice buffet breakfast. My first time to eat breakfast on the Lido deck. I filled out my customs forms and Return guests (b2b) were to meet at 9:45 to go through U.S. Customs and we did so without much trouble. There were just more people than they were probably used to having for a b2b as our group alone had 25. Since I’m staying onboard debarkation was a snap.
Ship / Crew
The Crew is top notch. Always willing to help, I was always greeted by name many times. I met Captain Scala on embarkation day and he recognized me from some previous cruises on the Ecstasy. He is a great guy and very professional Captain. By the end of the cruise everyone else knew what a fantastic captain he is as he was recognized by John Heald, the press, and the bloggers who crashed his Q&A session on the last sea day. I really enjoyed the bar staff at the Lobby bar and all the bar servers over the five days. With so many cocktails events over the five days some bar servers became well known.
Cabin
I had cabin E-181, a 1A interior cabin. It is really one of my favorites on a Fantasy class ship as it is on the Empress deck and makes it easy for embarkation & debarkation. Also the lobby bar is close as well as access to the dining rooms. No refrigerator, but the cabin steward kept my cooler full of ice. No hair dryer and fewer shelves than newer ships, but lots of storage in the three wardrobes. Push button safe, flat screen TV, good WiFi connection, and a unique floor plan. I had a towel animal each night.
Food
Breakfast in the dining room was very good and my first choice, but many prefer the buffet. There are a lot of options for lunch: the ‘Taste of Nations’ which changes daily and the regular buffet both in the Windows on the Sea, the Grill for burgers & hotdogs, the Deli, the new Mongolian Wok, or the Celebration Dining Room on sea days. The quality of food was good to very good. Some items better are than others. At dinner if you do not care for a dish or entree ask for a different item, the waiters really will help in any way they can.
Interesting / Unique
The most unique cruise I have ever taken has to be the John Heald Bloggers Cruise. With all the special events it was like taking two cruises at once. You could enjoy all the regular ship events and activities plus all the Blogger events and functions. Double the comedy shows, double the cocktail parties, all the unique events, and group functions. Certainly more than DOUBLE the FUN.
Final
Of all the fantastic things on this cruise the thing I enjoyed the most was meeting all the wonderful people that I have communicated with online for many years. To me that was the highlight.
