Carnival Imagination Cruise Review

Carnival Imagination Cruise Review

Just The Facts
Ship:  Carnival Imagination
Sailing:  February 16, 2020 - 4 day cruise
Captain: Giuseppe Strano
Cruise Director:  Benjamin
Ports:  Long Beach California, Catalina Island, CA, Encenada, Mexico, Long Beach, California.

This is my 2nd time on the Carnival Imagination, my 76th Carnival Cruise Line cruise, and my 153rd cruise overall.  I am sailing with the Dear Wife and many of my good cruise friends.

Day One—Sunday—February 16 — Embarkation
Lobby elevators - Carnival Imagination
We are staying on the Queen Mary located next to the Long Beach Cruise Terminal so no rush this morning.  Check out is 11:00 am so we'll just walk over to the ship. Although the most direct route was blocked by a temporary fence for the Festival we rolled our bags over and checked them without trouble.  Then into the terminal for our check-in and security.  No crowd at all and we were on the ship by 11:30 am.  Easy Peasy.  We had a forward port hole cabin, E-7 on deck 7, the same I had when I sailed previously.  Not as big as the corresponding porthole on the Panorama, but nice.  We went up to Lido and all the friends began to arrive.  I had a double meat Guy’s Burger and it was excellent.  Best Guys in a long time…they actually cooked the meat as it is supposed to be…smashed on the grill and with a light crust.  Really proud of the chef, most don’t cook it long enough.  Ten of the thirteen  friends sailing this cruise came by so all is well on the Imagination.  It will be fun.  They just caulked our shower and DW was put off by the smell but that was almost remedied by the time we had a cocktail in the lobby.  Thank you Housekeeping. We unpacked and made ready for Boat Drill that was between 5:00 - 5:30 pm.  We were muster station A4 and met in the Theater on deck 8. It went well and easy to return to cabin afterward.  We went to the Alchemy Bar about 7:00 pm and the group showed before dinner.  For the second straight cruise they screwed up the dinning reservations.  Ten have a very good round top in center of MDR, and three a banquet a long way away.  Were adding one to the main table, and DW and I will make do on our own.  It’s fine, as a vegetarian DW prefers the Lido Marketplace anyway.  For dinner tonight I ordered: the Roasted Tomato Soup, the Lasagne as a starter, and the Honey Glazed Pork Loin entree.  For dessert the Strawberry Creme.  Entree was good, the rest just so-so.  We retired after dinner to the cabin…I had some business with Guest Services then started this review.  GS offered us a small upgrade due to the smell problem with the new caulking, but we passed, they did give us some drink vouchers…thanks are appreciated and we are good.  It was an interesting day with some hiccups, but overall a good first day on the Carnival Imagination.

Day Two—Monday—February 17th—Catalina Island, CA
I slept very well with the smooth seas overnight. We arrived and anchored off of Catalina Island early this morning. I went to the Pride Dining Room about 9:15 for the best breakfast of this trip.  I ordered Danish, Banana & Melons, Avacado Toast with Poached eggs, side of Bacon & Hash browns, and a short stack of Pancakes.  It was great!  We debated wether to go ashore since this is a tender port, but the weather was nice so we did decide to go about 11:30.  Unfortunately there was a delay about the time we were going due to the evacuation of a guest who had passed earlier in the morning.  We made it to Avalon about noon and walked into town and stopped at the Marlin Club.  The entire group stopped by with most of the girls continuing on to shop in the quaint town of Avalon. Myself and some others stayed at the bar.  It was a very interesting group who came in this afternoon…some serious partiers.  We walked back to the water about 2:30 and there was a long long line to return.  We waited 75 minutes to get on a tender, but it was a beautiful day.  It was a fun day, but I may question debarking here in the future although we could have left earlier and returned earlier and avoided some wait times.  I had a very nice Guy’s double cheeseburger about 5:00 pm that will be my dinner for the day.  We had invitations to the Diamond Guest party at 6:30 pm. in the Shangri La Lounge on the Imagination Promenade. There were only about 20 guests in the room and 18 were in our group or friends so it was friendly group for sure. They normally only get 3-4 Diamonds a cruise on average on this smaller ship, but they had plenty of servers for the hors d'oeuvres and bar servers for cocktails for us.  We had a group photo taken with the Captain before the officers left.  DW went to the MDR with most the group, but I had four extra coconut shrimp at the party so I retired to the cabin to watch a movie and work on the review.  It was a very interesting day in Avalon and on the Carnival Imagination.

Day Three—Tuesday—February 18th—Encenada, Mexico

Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well. I enjoyed yesterdays breakfast so much I again went up to the Pride Dining room for breakfast about 9:00 am.  I ordered all the same plus Tomato Juice and Corned Beef Hash (fried) and since that was a feature of a Breakfast Bowl I had another poached egg.  Only thing was the bread was tough under the Avacado Toast, I’ll try to request it on regular white bread in future.  It was a lot to eat but need the protein with todays plans.  At noon nine of our group met in Lobby and we took a shuttle into downtown Encenada.  We walked the two blocks to Hussong’s and had our choice of tables.  We sat up a nine top in the center.  By 1:00 pm we all had our first drinks.  It was 2-for-1 beer so I had two Bohenia (clara) Cervesas to begin.  By 2:00 pm it was full of locals (Siesta time?). Soon with the refills and a large bag of peanuts the party really began.  The thing about Hussong’s is that it is genuine and very eclectic…you never know what your going to get.  We had groups of businessmen, rugby team, girls day out groups, a few tourists, bikers, and more. Entertainment included strolling mariachis, flower vendors, shoe shine boys, caricature artists, and the feature in most opinions: a rodeo roper.  The Roper was very surprisingly great and I’ve seen my share in Texas.  We had set an escape time of 4:00 pm, but blew past that and returned by taxi about 5:00 pm.  Probably good as we avoided lines before the 5:30 back on board time.  More than enough to drink and entertainment already today so I retired to the cabin to hold down the bed.  Room service a great option. It was a good day at Hussong’s and on the Carnival Imagination.

Day Four—Wednesday—February 19th—Fun Day at Sea

Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well.  I was up about 7:30 am and checked accounts and paid some bills.  Today is Seafood Brunch day on the Imagination so both of us went to the Pride MDR for brunch.  We had a bunch of friends set next to us or with us so fun. We used our Diamond drink vouchers on Bloody Marys.  DW ordered the French Toast and it was the size of a 1/3 loaf of bread…tasted great too.  I ordered the Steak & Eggs with side of Bacon and Hash Browns.  All good.  I had the Banana Creme Pie for a dessert.  About 11:30 am they evacuated a guest by Coast Guard medical evac helicopter, unusual on a four day cruise you would have two major medical emergencies.  We watched a movie on the cabin TV then went up to Lido deck and sat of the aft watching the wake.  I had a nice Guy’s Burger & Fries and DW had Guy’s French Fries with Ranch Dressing.  Good.  We then each enjoyed a Mudslide for dessert.  Stopped by the Lobby Bar for a refresher as well.  We met the group for apéritifs before dinner at the Alchemy Bar for farewells.  We ate in the Lido, I had promised the Captain that I would try the pizza so I intended dinner to be Salad and Pizza tonight.  It was OK, but not near the pizza on MSC ships.  I did also sample the Leg of Lamb from the carving station and the Chicken Parmesan…both good and they had more selections than I anticipated, but Royal Caribbean is king of the Evening dinner Lido buffets.  We retired to the cabin to finish packing and set out our large bags for pick up by 11:00.  It was a nice relaxing sea day on the Carnival Imagination.

Debarkation—Thursday—February 20th—Long Beach, California
Smooth seas overnight and we were sitting just off the pier by 3:00 am.  and docking about 6:00 am.  We stayed in the cabin until 8:35 then took the Diamond Shortcut off the ship to the terminal where we picked up our checked bags and cleared U.S. Border Control.  A very easy process.  We were on the Carnival Airport shuttle by 9:00 am. Airport was a smooth process too.  We enjoyed a nice lunch and then our flight was at 2:30pm landing at 7:15 pm local time at DFW.  A two hour drive home to the ranch by 10:00 pm.  A very easy travel day.

Tonnage: 70,367 GT - Length:     855 ft - Beam: 103 ft - Draft: 25 ft 7 in - Decks:     10 - Speed: 21 knots - Capacity: 2,056 passengers (lower berths) 2,634 passengers (all berths) - Crew:     920 - Carnival Imagination is a Fantasy-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Built by Kværner Masa-Yards at its Helsinki New Shipyard in Helsinki, Finland, she was floated out on July 1, 1995

Cabin
We had cabin E7 an interior porthole cabin located on Empress deck 7 far forward on starboard side. The same cabin I had on my previous cruise on this ship.  The cabin is a standard Porthole/OV space, with twin or queen bed. It has a swipe type safe, three-section closet, one chair, one electrical outlet, Telephone on desk, Small Stool at dresser/desk, Hair dryer, and small flat screen TV with the interactive features.  There is no refrigerator. My cabin steward, Lu, was very good, the cabin was always clean and ice container filled.

Dining / Food / Bars
Upgraded two years ago to Carnival’s now standard 2.0 upgrade she has all the dining and bar options one would expect on Carnival: Guy’s Burgers, Blue Iguana Cantina, Alchemy Bar, Red Frog Rum Bar, and more.  The Horizon Lido Buffet is much improved as well.  I found the food adequate and really like the 2.0 additions.  We didn’t eat in the MDR for dinner.  The Guy's Burgers were cooked properly...when they are they are the best at sea.

Crew / Other
Crew were friendly, helpful, and efficient. The Carnival Hub iPhone App is wonderful, especially for checking your account balances.  I found the internet Wi-Fi worked very well.

Carnival Panorama Cruise Review

Carnival Panorama Cruise Review
Just The Facts
Ship:  Carnival Panorama
Sailing:  February 4, 2020 - 7 day cruise
Captain: Luca Lazzarino
Cruise Director:  Emma Pack
Ports:  Long Beach California, Cabo San Lucus Mexico, Mazatlan Mexico, Puerto Vallarta Mexico, Long Beach, California.

This is my 1st time on the NEW Carnival Panorama, my 75th Carnival Cruise Line cruise, and my 152nd cruise overall.  I am sailing with the Dear Wife and many of my good cruise friends.

Day One—Saturday—February 8 — Embarkation
We drove to Arlington Texas on Friday evening so that we could take an early 9:00 am flight from DFW airport to LAX.  We arrived early enough to enjoy a breakfast at Pappadeaux’s.  Traveling on the day of a cruise debarkation can be risky, but It’s only a 3+ hour flight and we pick up two hours of time going west so we usually do this when sailing from California.  We had a smooth flight and landed at LAX about 10:30 am local time.  We picked up our bags, found the Carnival shuttle representative, and we were soon on our way to Long Beach.  Friends happened to be on the shuttle so the FUN began early.  We arrived at the port about noon, checked our bags with porters, then walked over to the new improved port facilities to be processed through security and checked in for the cruise.  A bit of walking but we basically went straight through and boarded the new Carnival Panorama and in our cabin by 12:45 am.  Embarkation was much improved for Long Beach.  We have one of my favorite porthole cabins (2221) and was pleasantly surprised to find in a bit larger on the Panorama and everything is so new as the ship has only been sailing for a few weeks.  New shower curtain, no scratches in sink or walls, new carpet, new bedding & curtains, large flat screen TV, and everything just seems fresh an new.  We rested in the cabin from the boarding activity then timed our arrival at the Lido Buffet for 1:30 when cabins open to guests…that gets them out of the buffet.  DW had a nice taco bowl from the Blue Iguana and I had a plate of assorted vegetables and beef tips from a buffet station..  They have a new style of ice creme machines for soft serve and we were both amazed at how cold the ice creme and yogurt was today.  Coldest ever experienced anytime in my long life.  Different.  We went to the new Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse/Brewhouse to enjoy a beer about 2:15.  They serve BBQ with indoor and outdoor seating and have a pub atmosphere with a stage for evening shows.  A good concept to help serve food on sea days yet maintain an area for entertainment and premium evening dining as well.  A Pilsner Urquell for me but I did sample a brew done on board.  No Red Frog other than on Lido Deck.  Muster Drill was between 3:30-4:00 pm, we were in A4 the theater so not too bad an experience. I could sit.  When we returned to the cabin our bags were there and we met Angel our Cabin Steward.  We unpacked and did some cabin set up for the rest of the day.  We ordered some room service for DW and I ordered a test BLT…even better than in the past, if that’s possible.  I went by the Alchemy Bar and it was busy but not overly so.  Saw many of my friends before dinner.  FUN.  For dinner tonight I ordered: the Roasted Tomato Soup, the Heart of Lettuce salad with Tomato Vinaigrette, and the Honey Glazed Pork Loin entree.  For dessert the Strawberry Creme and a Fruit Plate.  Entree was good, the rest just so-so.  Retired after dinner to the cabin and started this review, but it was very late by Texas time and soon asleep.

Day Two—Sunday—February 9th—Fun Day at Sea
I slept very well with the smooth seas overnight. I went to the Sea Day Brunch in the Vista Restaurant (MDR) about 8:50 am and not too busy…I had a sharing table with other Diamonds and some newbies (Blue Cards) so interesting. I ordered a nice Fruit Plate, the Huevos Rancheros eggs, Tomato Juice, and hot milk.  Everything was very good including service.  It’s a long walk from my far forward cabin to the Vista Dining Room located far aft, but good for me.  I have adjusted to the NEW elevator system on the Panorama…no up or down buttons nor floor button inside the elevator.  You enter your desired deck in elevator lobby area and it tells you which elevator to use.  I like it.  We had invitations to the Diamond Guest function at 11:00 am. in the Limelight Lounge. There were at least 75+ guests in the room, I’m just not used to that many Diamonds on a normal 7-day cruise.  but they had plenty of servers for the hors d'oeuvres and bar servers for cocktails.  We had photos taken with the Captain but the best surprise was that my favorite Carnival Cruise officer was on board, Mr. Milan Petkovic.  It was great catching up with him.  Most of our cruise friends were in attendance so we basically sat and drank cocktails.  Some of us too much.  After the party I retired to the cabin for a nice nap.  Many went to the Pig & Anchor for lunch and wine.  The DW, my vegetarian, had the special Macaroni & Cheese dish.  I’m still napping.  The NEW Playlist Productions show: Broadway Beats was tonight as well as a full variety of entertainment options.  The Punchliner had four comedy shows, and entertainment in Lobby area, Ocean Plaza, and Pig & Anchor all evening.  I’m still napping.  They did deliver Strawberries to the cabin sometime during the afternoon.  It’s Elegant night, but I don’t really do elegant myself.  Only six of our ten showed up for our 8:15 pm dinner, but I wasn’t one of them as I was still napping.  I finally woke about 9:30 pm and wasn’t hungry so decided to stay in bed since I had it all warmed up.  It was a very restful day on the Carnival Panorama.

Day Three—Monday—February 10th—Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well even with yesterdays extended nap.  We went up to Lido Deck for breakfast and I had two very nice Huevos Rancheros from the Blue Iguana.  IMHO they were better than yesterdays Huevos Rancheros in the MDR.  DW had pastries.  We sat out side and saw several whales as we enjoyed breakfast. We went up to deck 11 to enjoy the weather and whale watch. The ship barely moves as it crosses over the whale migration sea lanes as we approach Cabo.  We had some cabin time as we waited for a less busy time to board the water shuttles to the main land.  We walked down to deck 0 about 12:20 pm and strait onto a smaller fast water shuttle…no lines…very easy.  In Cabo there are lots of tours to the beaches, whale watching, or to the cliffs/arches, but we decided to just stay around the pier/port area today.  We saw friends on shore and stopped at Captain Tony’s Bar & Grill for some beers, diet coke, and guacamole.  The food was good.  Cabo is interesting, DW's first time here and my second.  I did a whale watching cruise and close pass by the Arches previously.  We walked around the harbor and shops a bit and enjoyed the perfect 72º  weather before heading back to the water tenders to the ship. After some clean up and cabin time our friends all met at the new Guy’s Pig & Anchor for either beer, appetizers, or full meal.  They have an interesting menu of BBQ items, but they do charge $ in the evenings.  I had a Pilsner Urquell and the Trash Can Nachos, DW the Macaroni & Cheese.  It was very nice to have entertainment as they do nightly here.  Since we did the appetizer route we went to the Horizon MDR for a late dinner at 8:30. I ordered a Shrimp Cocktail and the Rosemary Lamb Shank entree.  For dessert a Fruit Plate and Butter Pecan Ice Creme.  It was OK, but I should have stayed at the Pig & Anchor for BBQ.  We walked the Promenade and saw some entertainers in the main lobby before retiring to the cabin.  It was a good day in Cabo San Lucas and on the Carnival Panorama.

 Day Four—Tuesday—February 11th—Mazatlan, Mexico

Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well.  We were docking in Mazatlan in an industrial area by 8:00 ish this morning.  We have decided to stay on board today to take advantage of the ship activities and specialty food. We did turn our clocks forward one hour overnight but we still had time to make it to the Vista MDR before the 9:00 am closing time.  Rarely do both of us go to the MDR so it was different…we had a very nice casual breakfast.  I did order a large breakfast but they brought much more than I ordered, maybe as the MDR was closing.  DW had a cheese omelette and I had a banana, two melons, baked apple, four eggs, four hash browns, a special corned beef hash, double bacon, toast, pastry, and tomato juice.  Excellent.   We did a walk about on the upper decks…it’s very nice weather for those going ashore. They have a HoHo bus that picks up at the pier or a shuttle that takes guests beyond the industrial area to the boulevard.  It was interesting watching guests debark. I returned to the cabin and did some business online the rest of the morning.  I finally messaged AnnaMarie and caught up with her at the Lobby Bar.   Terry met us as well.  Since it was  a port day and easy to get into the specialty lunch venues I had the Mongolian Wok located in JiJi’s on deck 11.  It was great, one of my Carnival favorites along with the Guy’s Burger and room service BLT’s.  I have already completed my food trifecta early in the cruise.  We had a great table on deck to enjoy the very nice afternoon weather, it was nice and we had local cellular cell service for telephone or WiFi.  It is nice since we have not had WiFi at home ten weeks.  We had apéritifs at the Alchemy Bar and visited with old & new friends, the Alchemists, and Milan & crew.  We also found friends of our DIL (daughter in law) from Arlington, Texas and also sailing on this cruise. We had a full table of ten at dinner this evening in the Horizon Dining Room.  Tonight I ordered: a Shrimp Cocktail, and two entrees: Chicken Milanese and he Braised Short Ribs.  For dessert I had the Popcorn Pot de Creme and a Fruit Plate.  The Chicken Milanese was exceptionally good and the beef was nice with fresh Horseradish.  Lots of activities this evening and our group did the Comedy Club, Music in  the various venues, and Casino time.  We had a walk around the Promenade deck before retiring to the cabin.  It was an interesting day with great food today on the Carnival Panorama.

Day Five—Wednesday—February 12th—Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well.  We were up about 7:00 am and I did some business as the markets open at 7:30 local time.  We are docked in a beautiful area of PV with views of the mountains, the Pacific Ocean, the harbor, and new town area.  We have decided to stay on board the ship again today so we took our time and didn’t go up to the Lido Marketplace for breakfast until about 10:00 am.  I had scrambled eggs, ham, and bacon, then a Huevos Rancheros from Blue Iguana.  DW had an omelette from the Omelette Station. Very good breakfast.  We enjoyed the outdoor weather and our cellular service from a nice table on the open deck for he rest of the morning and early afternoon.  At 2:15 we had lunch in JiJi’s, not busy since most guests are off the ship.  In the business world all three major market indexes set all time highs today. Also a good time to purchase Royal Caribbean since all cruise stocks are down due to the Coronavirus.  I added some RCL today.  After our late lunch we watched a movie, Second Chapter with Jennifer Lopez. It was a good movie.  We had another stroll on the outside decks, did some shopping in the retail shoppes on board then watched some classic movies on TCM in the evening.  We had a Room Service dinner, DW had a Grilled Cheese with Potato Chips, and I had two BLT’s with Pickles, Potato Chips, and extra Mayo.  Very good.   It was a Fun yet restful day on the new Carnival Panorama.

Day Six—Thursday—February 13th—Fun Day at Sea
Rolling seas overnight as we sailed further from land as we have all cruise once we left Puerto Vallarta.  Some waves crashing on hull at our location  on the ship were interesting, I don’t mind them but the DW says they wake her…I notice them but slept fine.  We were up early and I checked the markets before going to the Sea Day Buffet in the MDR about 9:00 am.  I ordered the Eggs Benedict with Bacon, Hash Browns, & Corned Beef Hash.  It was good and filling.  We walked around the ship and visited with friends on the aft deck.  I had cabin time in the afternoon then we both had a Taco Bowl from Blue Iguana.  We had complementary (12-2:30pm) Gelato for dessert, Mango for me and Coffee for DW.  Lots of people out on the outer decks taking in the sun as we sail north. We had our apéritifs at the Alchemy Bar, Nicola prepared some unique cocktails for us.  We attended the Playlist Productions feature show: Broadway Beats a new show and only on the Carnival Panorama.  It was various popular songs done to a New York City story line.  The music and dance was very entertaining, but perhaps the set itself was best thing it production.  I do question the theme of the show…in the planning stages for this show they must have known that it was going to Los Angeles and a New York themed feature seems out of place.  A Hollywood or LaLa Land theme would have been perfect.  Folllowing the show we went direct to the Horizon Dining room for a nice meal.  We started with a nice Prosecco sent to us for our Anniversary by Mr. Milan, the Beverage Manager.  I ordered:  the Stuffed Mushrooms, the Fusilli Mushroom Creme Pasta (as a starter), the Filet Mignon entree with Baked Potato, and Creme Brulee for dessert.  It was a very good meal.  We retired after dinner.  It was a fun and busy day on the Carnival Panorama.

Day Seven—Friday—February 14th—Fun Day at Sea
Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well.  Cooler today but clear weather.  I was up by 6:30 when the markets opened and I am watching it closely as I own all three of the Cruise companies (CCL, RCL, NCLH) and all have been very volatile with the Coronavirus scare.  I’ve actually been trying to add to my RCL position when it dips in price so I need to monitor it somewhat.  No better place to do it than from a cruise ship.  We had a cabin morning with Breakfast in Bed today, it was nice.  I’ll be working on this review most of the day today.  For lunch we went up to Lido deck, DW had a Marketplace lunch and I had a nice salad then a SeaFood Shack lunch of Lobster Rolls ($12) one butter and one mayo served with large fresh cut French Fries.  Very Good.  At 5:00 pm the Panorama hosted the Platinum / Diamond Party in the Liquid Lounge theater.  It was a near full house on the lower level.  I was surprised that they called my name as the most senior Diamond with 528 days sailed on Carnival Cruise Line.  I usually drink the Titos Vodka & Lemon-aid at this function, usually easy to get to their station.  I had my share and enough extras for our gathering in the Lobby area following the Diamond meet.  I just had time to change for our final dinner on the Panorama.  We had all ten again and I ordered the Baked Onion Soup, Escargot, the Penne, Shrimp, & Bacon Pasta, the Prime Rib entree, and the Baked Alaska for dessert.  Yes their were flames again on the Baked Alaska, something I have not seen in many years.  I believe it’s sterno or similar in a container in the middle of the Baked Alaska.  The dish is browned in the kitchen, not by flames covering it.  Still looked good.  The waiters did their ‘Farewell’ song and it was a good final meal with good service.  We went directly back to the cabin to pack and had our bags out 15 minutes before the 11:00 pm deadline.  It was a Fun and easy final day on the Carnival Panorama.

Debarkation—Saturday—February 15th—Queen Mary -- Long Beach, California
Smooth seas overnight and we were docked on time.  Our group purposely traded all the number 1 luggage tags for number 21 so we would be among the last to leave the ship.  This was because everyone is staying in Long Beach tonight and no need to rush as hotel check in would be later in day.  We all met on Lido Deck aft by 9:00 am.  I had my first Western omelette from the omelette station with side of bacon and hash browns and it was all very good.  It was nice to wait until about 10:30 am to debark the ship as there was no rush at the end.  We only stopped once on our movement from Deck 10 to the Queen Mary including elevators, check-out, baggage claim, and Customs check point.  Our walk to the QM was longer due to the  Scottish Festival as we had to go around along the road to a new entry.  We checked our bags as cabin wasn’t ready and went to the Festival.  It was interesting since the Texas Scottish Festival was my business for 30 years.  We had our cabin about 2:00 pm and our bags shortly afterward.  I changed into shorts and a Texas Scottish Festival T-shirt and we were back to the Festival.  Scored some great shortbread and cookies.  I did see some folks I knew including entertainer Eric Rigler, we had not seen each other in 25 years.  Small world.  We had a nice Meat & Cheese platter in a Pub set up on the QM itself for dinner.  Nice food and entertainment in one of the historic ballrooms.  We love our cabin, larger than what we had on the Panorama and unlike the Panorama we could open these portholes.  An easy Carnival Panorama debark and great day on the Queen Mary and at Scottish Festival.

Ship
The Carnival Panorama is the newest and last of the Vista class ships and newest Ship in the Carnival fleet.  This only the ninth sailing of the ship so everything is NEW.
Length: 1,055
Guest capacity: 4,008
Gross registered tonnage: 133,500
Inaugural cruise: December 11, 2019

Cabin

We have cabin 2221 a Port Hole cabin forward on deck two on starboard side. The room is actually a little larger than this same cabin on other Carnival ships. It has: key pad safe, hair dryer, makeup mirror, nice shower, Stool at vanity/desk, mini refrigerator, couch, and a great large flat screen TV and location above bed. Everything is NEW.  The air conditioning was the coldest we have experienced on a Carnival ship. Pleased with location although it’s a long way to the aft MDR for breakfast.  I like this cabin, DW not as much.  Internet work very well.

Crew
Overall very good. My cabin steward Angel from the Philippines was very good, we always had a clean cabin. Our MDR waiter and team were also good.  The Captain is one of the best.  The CD Emma did a great job. It was great to see Milan again.

Food
I found the food to be good, about average for most cruise lines . Service always above average to exceptional.  Plenty of room for tables in both MDR and Lido…you are not hitting or bumping into adjoining chairs or tables.  The Mongolian Wok, Guy’s Burgers, and Seafood Shack were great.  Ice creme soft serve machines were new and very good.

Carnival Paradise Cruise Review

Carnival Paradise Cruise Review
Just The Facts
Ship:  Carnival Paradise
Sailing:  November4, 2019 - 5 day cruise
Captain: Claudio Bozzo  - Hotel Director: Timothy Oakley - Cruise Director: Adam
Ports: Tampa, FL - Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands - Isla de Cozumel, Mexico - Tampa, FL

This is my 2nd time on the Carnival Paradise, my 74th Carnival cruise, and my 151st cruise overall.  I am sailing as a solo.

Day One—Monday—November 4 — Embarkation
My cozy porthole cabin
I am in Florida visiting the DD (dear daughter) in Spring Hill, FL,  so taking the opportunity to do this cruise while the DW (dear wife) visits the DD and the new DGD (dear grand-daughter) for bonding time.  All three dropped me off about 11:10 am. The timing was very good.  There was just a short 2-3 minute wait at security then no wait at all at the VIFP check-in counter.  It was very smooth just as my previous embark at Tampa earlier this year…they know what they are doing at this port.  I proceeded direct to boarding and was in my cabin by 11:35 am…unbelievable.  I was feeling a bit peckish so I went up to deck 10 and the Lido buffet.  I had Roast Beef from the carving station and made a nice sandwich with the fresh bread from the bread station.  It was very good. I noted that Guy’s Burger was packed, embark day food has changed to more casual food.  Soft serve Ice Creme for dessert. I retired to my porthole cabin of solitude (very enjoyable after a house full of people, dogs, and baby the past few days) to relax a bit.  I did unpack and set up cabin since I rolled my duffle bag on with me and began this review while I have local internet. I went on a walk about and seems everyone was boarded by 2:30.  No line at Guy’s so a sample burger to hold me until dinner.  I went by GS (guest services) as it seems I was issued two portfolio numbers…discovered when I purchased my first Coca-cola.  Boat drill was about 3:00 pm and fortunately my station is just up one deck in the theater.  I had my card ‘dinged’ and we had about a 15 minute safety instruction but the Fun Squad was very entertaining.  So easy to walk back down to cabin during this busiest time of the cruise. I have a Porthole cabin on Empress Deck. This used to be the ‘Pink’ ship but has been completely redecorated and updated in the blue Caribbean motif that began with the Vista class ships.  The cabin is nice and roomy especially for a solo. I purchased an internet package ($60) as we started sailing away from Terminal 3 about 4:30 pm.  I went to the Lobby Bar and enjoyed the solo entertainer Alan Jenkins as well as a couple of Pilsner Urquell beers.  Very enjoyable.  I have 8:15 pm dinner in the Destiny MDR (main dining room) and assigned in an area with Travel Agents attending a seminar…perfect. Tonight I ordered: the Roasted Tomato Soup, two Shrimp Cocktails, the Heart of Lettuce salad with Tomato Vinaigrette and the Honey Glazed Pork Loin entree.  For dessert the Caramelized Phyllo with Carmel Creme and some Ice Creme.  All good.  After dinner I did a small walk about the ship then retired to the cabin for rest and relaxation.  It was a very easy and nice embarkation day on the Carnival Paradise.

Day Two—Monday—November 5th—Fun Day at Sea
Lobby Bar and Stage
Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well. My cabin steward Adi, from the Philippines, brought a fan so nice air circulation last night…that probably helped the good sleep.  I was up early and did some online business before breakfast.  I went to the Sea Day Brunch in the Elation Restaurant (MDR) about 8:50 am and not too busy…much easier to get a sharing table when everyone speaks the same language unlike the MSC Meraviglia last month.  I ordered a nice Fruit Plate, the Steak & Eggs to order, Orange Juice, Tomato Juice, and hot milk.  Everything was very good including service and guests.  I had an invitation to the Diamond Guest function at 11:00 am. in the Leonardo Lounge. There were at least 40+ guests in the room and that was very surprising to me, but I haven’t been sailing Carnival of late and not sure all were Diamonds.  I had good conversations with the Captain and especially Tim Oakley the Hotel Director.  The Bloody Mary’s were nice and I took a Diet Coke back to the cabin.  Interestingly my six diet cokes I ordered were delivered while I was away so they are now in the cabin mini-refrigerator and I’m good to go. Thanks Carnival for the Diamond gathering and 11:00 am is not as good as cocktail hour, but much better than those that start as early as 9:00 or 10:00 am. It’s a beautiful warm day today.  I had cabin time until 2:00 pm when I went up to Lido and had a Guy’s Burger for lunch always a nice option for a good meal.  Soft Serve ice creme for a sweet. The outdoor decks are now packed with the sun worshippers and swimming pools full of bodies.  I’m glad I only do that at home at the ranch.   I was having a nice wee cabin nap when the Strawberry Lady knocked on the door, a VIFP gift that I really don’t need, but thanks for the thought.  It’s Elegant night, but I don’t really do elegant myself.  Some guests do seem to enjoy dressing and getting photographs and it is a nice revenue stream for Carnival so good for all who do it.  I had cocktails at the Rotterdam Bar deck 9 aft just above the MDR.  My Jana cocktail or modified Cosmopolitan with Elderflower were very nice.  Dinner was good, I ordered:  Stuffed Mushrooms, Four Season Salad, the Slow Cooked Prime Rib with Baked Potato, and the Vanilla Crème Brûlée for dessert. I was another good meal.  Lots of entertainment options tonight including the Playlist Productions show: 80’s Pop to the Max in the Normandie Theater.  The Comedy Club, Lounges, and Casino all busy.  I retired somewhat early to the cabin.  It was a Fun Day at sea on the Carnival Paradise.

Day Three—Wednesday—November 6th—Grand Cayman Island
Ship almost to myself on a Port Day
Smooth seas overnight and I slept well.  I was up again early and was able to watch us arrive at Grand Cayman. We dropped anchor about 7:45 am right on schedule.  It’s again a beautiful day so guest should be very happy.  I went to the MDR for breakfast about 8:30 am and it was not busy, I had a window with nice view of the Carnival Vista anchored off our port side.  I ordered: melon & banana, Eggs Benedict with side of hash browns & bacon, orange and tomato juice, but I was told I could not get hot milk although I had it yesterday morning.I did a complete tour of the ship…Carnival has added a partial deck with new balcony cabins, a nice covered outdoor smoking lounge area, and of course changed the entire color scheme from prisoner pinks to Caribbean blues. I spent some time on deck this morning enjoying the weather then had a Caribbean themed lunch in the buffet were they had: Jerk Chicken, Pepper Pot, Plantains, Rice and Peas, and more.  I had sliced Pork butt from carving station and made a great Caribbean sandwich with extras, I also found some great Hearts of Palm.  I took some Germain Chocolate cake back to cabin for a later dessert.  There are two complementary movie channels on cabin television and I watched the 2:00 pm movie Pan (2015). I had never seen this movie and it was good.We had sailed away by the time my movie was over, one of the reasons I chose to stay on board today, I’m sure guests had fun at Stingray City, Seven Mile Beach, Margaritaville, or the Turtle tour, but I’ve done them all numerous times.  I enjoyed the ship to myself. I went to see the production show but it was cancelled so I had time for a cocktail in the Rotterdam Bar before dinner.  Not many in the MDR tonight so service was quick.  I ordered a premium steak ($20) from the optional menu so ordered accordingly to allow time for steak.  I had the Steak Ale and Cheddar Soup (mushrooms and onions), Mixed Greens Salad, double Shrimp Cocktail as starters.  Then the NY Strip Steak, it was cooked perfectly but was not a choice cut of beef, too much gristle, at least 25% gristle.  I know beef, I’m around it on a daily basis when at home on the ranch. Very disappointed that they would even serve that to a guest. I had enough to eat with the two baked potatoes I requested, but shame that my premium dinner is worst meal of the cruise.  Service was very good and I had Pot De Creme for dessert.  I was tired this evening and retired strait away.  It was an interesting and restful day on board the Carnival Paradise.

Day Four—Thursday—November 7th—Cozumel, Mexico
The Paradise along side of the Conquest and Vista in Cozumel
A bit more movement in the seas overnight, but I slept very well.  We have a late arrival in Cozumel this morning so I slept in as well.  We were docked by 10:00 am and shortly afterward I went up to Lido deck and breakfast at Blue Iguana.  I had two Huevos Rancheros with fresh fried eggs, good salsa, and cheese.  Very good one of my favorite Carnival breakfasts.  We have a long day here so I waited until abut 11:30 to leave the ship. We are docked with the Carnival Conquest and the Carnival Vista at Puerto Maya pier, but it wasn’t too difficult to get off and get through the tourist area.  Taxi line wasn’t too bad either so I was soon off for San Miguel ($8).  My favorite table was available at  Woody’s Bar & Grill so I set up a little HQ and I was soon online and watching some videos I couldn’t access on the ships basic Wifi plan.  I was also was able to update some software.  I really appreciate the fast WiFi at Woody’s.  Good food, clean bathrooms, great owners, Bohemia beer, and close to barber shop, pharmacy, and spa, just perfect for me.  I had Chimichangas today…they were very good.  I passed on the barber today, but needed my pedicure at Zensi Spa.  It was nice and the old feet felt ten+ years younger.  Although we are docked late I ended up going back to the ship about 5:00 pm.  It was hot and humid, my leather watch band was even wet so I took my time returning and was back on board and in the cabin shower and cool by 6:00 pm.  Nice.  The Conquest began leaving at that time so good opportunity to moon them from the porthole as they pulled away opposite of us.  Bye Conquest one of my favorite ships and they have one of the prettiest interiors of any Carnival ship IMHO.  I went to the Rotterdam Bar for an aperitif then dinner at 8:15 in the Destiny MDR, tonight I ordered:  the Baked Meatballs, Greek Salad, Baked Ziti (as starter), and the Rosemary Lamb Shank entree.  For dessert the Apple Pie and a Banana Split.  The Captain made an announcement since we were now an hour past sail away and they were have a small issue but we were sailing just after 10:00 pm so only two hours late, hopefully not an issue for return as I have a limited window on Saturday morning with my ride.  It was a fun day in Cozumel Mexico.

Day Five—Friday—November 8th—Fun Day at Sea
Senior Staff at VIFP party.  Youngest & Newest Captain in fleet
Fair seas overnight and I slept very well.  I was up about 7:30 am and updated the blog and more. In the business world all three major market indexes set all time highs yesterday. Also quoted a nice cruise. It’s good to be able to do business from sea.  I went to the Elation MDR for Sea Day Brunch…I had a nice table with nice guests and a good breakfast: a Fruit Plate, Huevos Rancheros, Bacon & Hash Browns, and a Bloody Mary.  Very good breakfast as all have been on this cruise.  Back in the cabin I then watched a great movie:  The Green Book.  I had never heard of it but enjoyed it very much so upon some research found it had just (2018) won three Academy Awards including the Best Movie…well deserved.  I had a Guy’s Burger about 2:00 pm for lunch, perhaps the best of the three I had this cruise as it had a nice crust on the meat...the secret to a proper Guy’s Burger.  At 5:00 pm I attended the Diamond/Platinum party in the Queen Mary Lounge.  It was the usual movie and introductions, but they had numerous servers so it went very well for guests as far as liquor and h'ourderves.  I did the usual Tito’s lemonade and was one of the few taking advantage of it. Nice buzz, thank you Carnival. I was about 80 days behind the senior guest, of course I know I have the most cruises overall, I don’t limit myself to Carnival.  Music during event by Alan Jenkins and I had a nice visit with him afterward.  I had a cocktail at the Lobby Bar and enjoyed a set by Alan...he's a good entertainer.  The production show tonight was Epic Rock, but having seen it numerous times passed for other live entertainment.  Dinner was very good and I ordered a lot:  Red Beet Carpaccio (2), Cannelloni, Tuscan Minestrone Soup, Heart of Iceberg Lettuce and a double portion of the Grilled Beef Tenderloin entree served with horseradish and Béarnaise sauce.  The lettuce was off, but everything else was excellent.  More than made up for the bad premium steak ordered previously. The waiters did their ‘Farewell’ song and it was a good final meal with good service.  I already had a big evening so I retired  strait to the cabin, I was surprised at how many bags were already left in the passageways.  I’m going for sleep tonight and I’ll pack tomorrow morning.  It was a Fun and easy final day on the Carnival Paradise.

Debarkation—Saturday—November 9th—Tampa Florida
Smooth seas overnight and we were docked on time despite leaving Cozumel late.  I went to the MDR for a very nice breakfast about 7:00 am then returned to the cabin to pack my bag.  DW & DD are picking me up about 10:00 at the Aquarium so I just chilled as long as possible.  Debark is very smooth on this ship, most use self-debark, many wait for luggage number process.  Very easy debark and pick up in Tampa and especially this smaller ship.

Ship
The Carnival Paradise is the final of the Fantasy class ships and originally the only non-smoking ship for 6+ years until it was repositioned to Long Beach CA. in late 2004.  The photo above on Coz day clearly shows the new decks and new balconies added during recent refit.

Tonnage:    70,367                             Speed:  21 knots  (25mph)

Cabin
I have cabin E-9 a Port Hole cabin forward on deck seven on starboard side.   Same deck as lobby entry and Lobby Bar.  The room is a standard size interior with: key pad safe, hair dryer, makeup mirror, Stool at vanity/desk, nice shower, large bath area, mini refrigerator, and great TV and location above bed. Very well designed at refit.  The air conditioning was only average, but Ari brought me cabin fan for circulation.  Very pleased with location.

Highlights of the Cruise
The goal of this cruise was just relax and to do nothing...successful
Cozumel Day was good and productive.
Embarkation was as easy as I have ever experienced.
Food was very good overall.
Great crew

MSC Meraviglia Cruise Review - Canada

MSC Meraviglia Cruise Review
October 8, 2019
Just the Facts:
Ship: MSC Meraviglia
Captain: Stefano Battinelli
Hotel Director: Guiseppe Pane  -  Cruise Director: Gene Young
Ports: New York City, USA - Sydney, Cape Breton Island - Cornerbrook, Newfoundland Canada  - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Canada - Québec City, Québec Canada  - New York City, USA.

I’m cruising as a solo. This is my final of four consecutive cruises on the MSC Meraviglia, my 13th MSC cruise and my 150th cruise overall.  I do have several clients and very good cruise and personal friends sailing.  I am sailing 40 consecutive nights on board the Meraviglia.

Tuesday October 8  /  Embarkation  /  New York City, USA  /  Day 1
NY Skyline at Sailaway
This is the third easy embarkation day in a row as I’m already on the ship and U.S. Customs was cleared yesterday.  I do have to change cabins this time as originally the DW was joining me for this segment, but alas plans changed. I will enjoy the balcony.  I was up early and NOW the WiFi from previous cruise is working…so stayed up and took advantage of it setting up this new review and checking on business.  I went to breakfast in the MDR as usual, I heard the news about Québec no longer being an overnight from English neighbors also on a B2B.  Since we cleared customs GS was processing B2B guests, and there are a lot, so I went to the GS desk and they processed my new card.  BUT first they gave me the good news, they did process a credit for my WiFi, a equatable amount so I am very pleased.  MSC has been nothing but excellent in guest service to me.  I actually moved my own items to my new cabin, it only took 20 minutes, and I had control of everything and I was done with it.  So all settled into the new balcony by 10:30 am.  At 12:30 I lucked into a banquet for Travel Agents visiting the ship in the Panorama Restaurant.  We had a fantastic menu and I ordered: Creamed Mozzarilla LaFondant, Pepper Crusted Sirloin Steak, and Passion Fruit Panna Cotta,  all very good.  I went upstairs to the Sky Bar, still only serving wine and beer until we leave New York, seems to be a problem ship wide with drink packages not being recognized at bar stations.  I'm very lucky and feel a little guilty as there have been long lines for guests boarding the ship today including my friends, not sure if it's organization or the travel agents gumming up the process. I began seeing friends in the Sky Lounge…enjoyed visiting with them and the wonderful view of Manhattan.  I stayed to enjoy the view when everyone went to boat drill and a Casino party sprung up around me so I enjoyed some complementary Cosmopolitans, I had been trying to get two since yesterday.  Thanks Casino. The MSC Meraviglia pushed off pier 88 about 7:30 pm into the Hudson River.  The New York Skyline was so beautiful as we sailed down the Hudson.  The group and I have 8:00 pm dining this cruise in the L’Olive d’Oro dining room on deck six.  It was a mess going to dinner as so many guests were late at first sitting that they were late 20 minutes late opening and it was a mass of people trying to get into the MDR.  Worst I have seen.  Tonight I ordered: Nicoise Salad, Za’atar Crusted Lamb T-Bone Chops, and Catalonian Creme for dessert.  After dinner I had a Mango Sorbet on deck six, before retiring to the new cabin.  It was a stressful day for many boarding guests, but it was actually a great day for me on this transition day.

Wednesday October 9  /  Day at Sea  /  Day 2
Brass Anchor Pub
Rolling seas overnight with a lot of movement that can be felt on deck 13 much more than on deck 5 my previous deck.  I had trouble getting to sleep in my new environment, or it could have been the sorbet.  I went to the MDR at 8:00 am for breakfast, I don’t even have to order anymore…the waiters know me by name and what I like for breakfast.   We turned our time forward an hour to be on Atlantic Time so now 2 hours off of Texas time.  At 10:00 am they held a Cruise Critic reception in the Sky Lounge.  Very glad I went as I was recognized as having having sailed 100 times on MSC, of course not true, but fairly close to the message. I have experience on 150 cruises and my cruise line of choice is now MSC.  What I really appreciated was the seven people who came to me afterward and said they read my blog.  Thank you folks, I always wonder if people get good cruise information in my simple presentations here.  And thank you MSC Meraviglia staff. The seas are really rolling today, I doubt I will see my Cirque du Soleil show tonight.  I had lunch in the L’Olive d’ora Restaurant my first time in there.  I ordered: Cobb Salad, Penne Pasta with Shrimp Arrabbiata, and Boston Creme Pie.  It was good.  I alternated between the Brass Anchor and the Sky Lounge most of the afternoon.  I was right about cancelling shows, not only was Cirque du Soleil cancelled but all the Production shows in the theater as well.  Plenty of music in the lounges though. The group met for cocktails before dinner in the Sky Lounge, it was very nice.  There was not the big scene at dinner this evening as we were seated at 8:00ish the regular time.  Tonight I ordered: Greek Salad, Homemade Lobster Ravioli, Beef Tournedos, and Peanut Butter Pie for dessert.  All were very good especially the entree and pie.   I’m doing the Rest & Relaxation thing tonight and retired to cabin early.  My new internet package is actually working well through the stormy weather...much better than previous cruise but it is a limited package so I have to be careful with bandwidth,  It was a great sea day on the MSC Meraviglia.

Thursday October 10  /  Sydney, Cape Breton Island  Canada  / Sea Day  /  Day 3
Meraviglia Galleria
Rolling Seas overnight but improved by morning with blue skies through out the day.  I slept well, but woke early then went to the MDR for breakfast.  Another Heuvos Rancheros morning with extras for me, and I was in and out quickly.  Much better weather today and I went up to Sky Lounge on deck 18 to see if I could pick up WiFi from the coast of Nova Scotia on my iPhone, I could.  I spent the morning on the internet and also brought up the Marine Ships Application maps to see our location…we were due to dock at 1:00 pm then 2:00 pm due to leaving NYC late.  Looking at the marine charts I knew we were still hours from port in Sydney  when I finally thought to look at cruise details it listed Corner Brook as our destination.  I knew that I had information no other guests knew…we won’t make it to Sydney.  At noon when the Captain made his usual announcements he stated that due to the harsh weather yesterday they could not make up for the late departure and that we actually lost time so that we would not make our first port of Sydney.  I believe it was absolutely the correct call.  With reduced time in port it would have been a repeat of the New York fiasco with guests leaving and returning to the ship with long waiting times in a line.  It was the right call by MSC and they offered $300 per cabin compensation for missing the port.  That is very generous as they actually do not have to offer anything to the guests.  I will miss eating a Lobster Roll and my Cape Briton Fiddle excursion, but still the responsible decision by MSC.  We’ll now be in Corner Brook early and Canadian Customs will be able to clear the ship earlier…that will be good for guests aboard. A Housekeeping officer came by to check on things and I mentioned the wardrobe doors off the henges and I shred the story about MSC housekeeping locking me out on the balcony a few years back.  I went to the Marketplace for a Pizza lunch about 2:00 pm and discovered some Peanut Butter Pie as well.  Sweet.  About 4:00 pm we had a gathering in the Brass Anchor and I had my share of Stella Artois beer.  It was great fun with the old gang.  At 7:00 pm I returned to the cabin to prepare for dinner, wardrobe door now working fantastically, and made 8:00 pm start for dinner.  It was a Caribbean Night menu , a new menu to me and I ordered: Virgin Island Salad, Fisherman’s Plate, Oven-roasted Jerk Chicken, and Key Lime Pie for dessert.  Other options were: Jamaican Style Beef, Creole Pasta, Guadeloupe-style Shrimp Tails, and more.  I retired after dinner to update blog and review options for Corner Brook since we’ll be there a bit longer tomorrow.  It was a profitable and fun day on the MSC Meraviglia.

Friday  October 11  /  Corner Brook, Newfoundland Canada  /  Day 4
Colors of Corner Brook Festival
Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well. I woke about 7:00 am.  We turned our clocks forward a half hour…I have never done that before today.  Newfoundland and Labrador have unique time zones.  Beautiful sunrise, it looks to be a cool but clear and dry day.  I went up to the MarketPlace for a light quick breakfast then to the TV Lounge on deck 7 my excursion meeting spot. I discovered That I have friends that booked on the same excursion: Corner Brook Highlights. We were off about 9:30 pm, 52 new friends, for our two hour tour.  First two stops were the Old Man in the Mountain and a memorial Totem called Heritage Tree.  Kind of spots contrived by the locals for tourists, I didn’t mind as the weather was perfect and the trees were very colorful.  Final stop was the Captain James Cook Historic Site with an impressive view of the City of Corner Brook and the spectacular Blomidon Mountains, caves and the Bay of Islands explored by Cook.  A very nice site to visit.  I chose the drop off in town option and a good choice as the local Fall Festival Colors of Corner Brook was in full swing in the town center.  A few vendors, only one food truck, but nice Maritime/Celtic music,  I discovered a nice hotel restaurant/bar, the Crown & Moose (If I ever open a Pub it will be called the Moose & Squirrel).  I had a Black Horse beer, a beer just made for the Newfoundland market and a fried Cod Plate.  Both very good.  I walked bak to the ship and was on board by 3:00 pm.  It was a nice little tour of Corner Brook, but once you’ve visited your probably done, as lovely as it was.  I took advantage of my iPhone hot-spot to use the internet…I also discovered that there is a daily limit on international hot-spot bandwidth.  The DW called and she had an automobile accident last night, she’s fine, car not so much.  She ran into a group of feral hogs crossing the road in the darkness.  Another thing to take care of when I get back to the ranch.  Met friends in Brass Anchor before dinner.  I was hungry this evening and dinner did not disappoint.  I ordered: Asian Salad, Rigatoni Meatballs, Duck a l’Orange, and Kiwi Sorbet & Apple Strudel for dessert.  The Rigatoni Meatballs were really good.  Pub music in Brass Anchor and Jazz in the Sky Lounge my two favorite hangouts, but again retiring early with big excursion tomorrow. It was a nice visit to Corner Brook Newfoundland and afternoon on the MSC Meraviglia.

Saturday October 12  /  Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Canada   /  Day 5
Green Gables
Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well. I woke about 7:15 am. We turned our time back the half hour so now back on Atlantic time, for a day.  I went up to the Marketplace for a very light breakfast, I forget that I have the Fantastica level this cruise and Room Service is included.  I’ll try that on next excursion day.  It was beautiful sailing into port but it’s a damp looking day.  Most of our group is on the same excursion today: Island’s Finest—Anne, Lobster, & Scenic Drive.  We all met at the theater at 9:15 and snuck to the buses about 10:00 am.  Soon we were on our way, but the weather is not cooperating as it’s raining.  We did a panoramic drive through downtown Charlottetown, a pretty little city, then headed north across the island.  Our guide was good, the countryside was green and the trees were full of color.  Soon we were at Green Gables Heritage Place the famous farm from the novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a local.  It’s a very delightful place with museum displays, history of the people and novel, tea room, interpretive center and of course the famous farmhouse itself.  After our time here we went to the Prince Edward Island National Park where we had a photo opportunity on the north shore bluffs…it was only for the brave as the wind and rain whipping on this bluff…the sand dunes were interesting too. Our final stop was at the PEI Preserve Company, a great place for a Lobster dinner. I actually had a second entree, Potato Pie, just for a proper PEI food sampling.  We arrived back at the very nice PEI cruise terminal about 4:15 pm so time for a little shopping before returning to ship.  Very impressed with the cruise facilities, they had vendors, music, crafts, Wifi, tourist information, and more.  I had been getting football scores during the day and once onboard confirmed the victory of my Oklahoma Sooners over the Texas shorthorns.  I met friends in the Brass Anchor but I enjoyed only Coca-Cola as I had such a big lunch. Dinner tonight was good, I ordered: Crispy Bacon Salad with Chicken (a new item and that’s what it was called…I think they lost something in translation), Shrimp Fettuccine Alfredo, Costeleta’s de Porco a Salsicheiro (pork chop), and Pudim Molotof for dessert.  Pork and dessert very different and very good.  I went on a walk about and also picked up a photo from Photo Department before retiring for evening.  I needed to update blog and review some NCAA football scores.  A very good day on PEI and the MSC Meriviglia.

Sunday  October 13  /  Sea Day  /  Day 6
My cabin - 13250
Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well. We turned our time back one hour for the final time…we are now on Eastern standard time…same as our final ports of Quebec and New York City.  I was up early and went to the MDR about 8:00 am for a nice breakfast.  Our group had our annual  Champagne party at 10:00 am this morning outside on the aft of deck 15.  The sea air was very nice.  I contributed three bottles of Prosecco I have collected on the prior cruises. We moved it indoors at noon and ate lunch in the Marketplace buffet.  They had a very nice roast beef at the carving station so I got buns from the fresh burger area and had a very nice Roast Beef Sandwich with fresh french fries.  It was very good.  I spent time in the Sky Lounge and Bar and had a couple of Raul’s nice cosmopolitans as I watched the St. Lawrence entry narrow and narrow, you can certainly see land on each side of the ship now. It’s also gotten cooler although I watched two girls jump into the main pool while I was up in the Sky Lounge. I met friends at the Brass Anchor just after 4:00 pm and enjoyed some Stella Artois beer and conversation. I happened upon the Beverage Manager on the way back to my cabin and confirmed that he was the one who sent me a gift of the Beverage Coupons … thank you.  I know they are again making some changes and I always liked the vouchers so I hope that they come back in the new drink packages or in the Fantastica bookings.  Tonight is Elegant night so I prepared for dinner, very few guests that wear formal now days, most just dress nicely. Dinner was good, I ordered: Arugula and Grana Padano Salad, Pappardelle with Sea Scallops, Oven-roasted Beef Prime Rib, and Ice Creme for dessert. All very nice.  So lucky to have a good wait team too. My usual routine after dinner, but I went right to sleep earlier than norm.  It was a nice sea day with friends on the MSC Meraviglia.

Monday  October 14  /  Quebec Canada  /  Day 7
Calm water overnight and I slept very well.  I ordered room service breakfast and it was delivered on time.  The three Danish and two Fruit Plates were perfect.  Our meet time for out tour was 8:45 am and we have eleven on the excursion: Grand Exploration of Quebec.  We were off just after 9:00 am and basically jus drove 3/4 blocks across the boulevard to Old Town Quebec,  totally amazed with the original building and restorations to the 17th century.  Beautiful original square with the Palace Royal and the old Church Notre-Dame-des-Victoires surrounded by Shoppes, Boutiques, Bistros, and much more.  Just a block away is the La Fresque des Québécois or Quebec City Mural. What a wonderful way to show the history of Quebec but through this huge mural incorporating the past with the modern day.  We re-boarded our bus to go up to the Place d’Armes and scenic overview of the old city…very nice.  We then walked over to the Le Château Frontenac for our rest stop, first class rest stop at that.  The Château Frontenac is the huge hotel dominating the skyline of Quebec City and is a very nice hotel.  Then the bus drove by the Parliament House and fountain on the way to the Plains of Abraham were the famous battle between the French and British took place in 1759.  We had couple of photo stops here.  We then off to some of the outlying areas to visit.  We drove to Beaupre Quebec to visit the Shrine of Sainte Anne du Beaupre.  The Basilica here is the third largest church in North America as well as the oldest pilgrimage site.  I have to admit that I was unaware of this and found it both interesting and educational.  Our bus drew the short straw on lunch break but we were now on our way to the ‎⁨Île d'Orléans for our 2:00 pm lunch at Ralais des Pins what was originally an old sugar shack used to collect Maple Syrup.  It was a very nice lunch of Vegetable Soup, choice of Chicken Breast with Maple sauce or a nice Salmon plate, and simple dessert.  I would have eaten anything by this time.  The island is home to many farms and busy this Monday holiday selling Pumpkins and Apples to locals from Quebec City and area.  Some beautiful fall foliage here.  Our final stop was Montmorency Falls.  A recreational Park featuring large waterfalls and activities.  We arrived back at the pier about 4:30 pm along with dozens of other tour buses.  Most on the buses returned to the ship and long lines, some of my group had other evening tours, myself a few others chose to go the few blocks to Old Town.  We revisited the Old Square and the Mural and found a great spot at Bistro Sous le Fort to enjoy drinks while others shopped.  The guys drank the local Belle Gueule beer, we even ordered the local Poutine as well as plain petit frites.  The Poutine was different, but I will stay with the plain version of fries myself.  We did begin to get a shower so headed back to the ship.  We found a direct entry and gangway and there was no one in line…we walked directly into the deck 5 lobby, my old ‘living room’.  We were in time for 8:00 pm dinner but I had a beer in the Brass Anchor then switched to Coca-Cola to finish off the day.  I took some cokes to the cabin and made some brief notes of the day but retired early…I was long-day tired.  It was a fantastic day in Quebec, I hope to return.

(Photo: I had great photos today, but went with the La Fresque des Québécois' composite photo -click it to enlarge- as it shows all three major sites in old town…I’ll post my photos on FB)

Tuesday  October 14  /  Quebec Canada  /  at Sea  /   Day 8
My private balcony view - Cabin 13250
This was originally a Quebec day, but changed due to needed earlier arrival back in NYC so we sailed about 1:00 a.m. this morning. (Guests received a $50 OBC for this before we even left NYC)  I slept very well but was up at 7:30 so went up to the Sky Lounge to whale watch as we were in the prime area for whales…the ship has slowed to under 10 knots as required in this area. I had a light breakfast but sat on port side with a watchful eye out.  Best weather of cruise on the sunny side of the ship, so I had balcony time most of the day.  I did get my refund on my cancelled Cirque show then went to the casino and lost $9.34, but I cashed out with $250 from my ship account. Then I went up to the MarketPlace for a custom Turkey Sandwich (turkey from carving station, bun & mayo from burger station) and ate it on aft deck, it was cooler there than my balcony.  I had an ice creme from ice creme bar on pool deck and took it back to my balcony.  The wind is blocked so still very nice all afternoon.  Nice to have a day to enjoy it. I used my iPhone for internet and made some phone calls since were sailing the St. Lawrence River and so close to land all day…fine connections and saving time on my ship WiFi plan. I met friends in the Brass Anchor about 5:30 and ten of us went to the Butchers Cut steakhouse at 6:00 pm for dinner.  It was again very good and I had the same waiter for all four cruises.  Tonight I ordered: Hearts of Palm, NY Strip Steak, Baked Potato, and Ice Creme for dessert.  I ended up with half a Filet Mignon too (try to sit next to friend who only eats half of anything brought to her).  Everyone seemed to really enjoy the food and service.  Everyone did their thing after dinner: casino, music, or show.  I even had time for some light music tonight, running out of days to see all the venues.  Jazz and Torch music are my favorites.  I retired soon though still comfortable from my nice meal. It was a very nice day on the MSC Meraviglia.

Wednesday  October 16  /  at Sea  /  Day 9
Teppanyaki Night
Smooth seas overnight. I woke about 4:00 am and began updating my blog as internet is faster at this time.  I spent an hour+ updating, and getting news & weather then back to sleep.  I was up and around by 8:30 am decided I needed a light breakfast so had two Danish and hot milk from the Casino actually.  I had gone there to get some small bills to use for tips on the ship.  I also went to Guest Services to purchase a airport shuttle voucher to LGA when we get to NYC. The Black Card guest reception was held in the Promenade on deck 6, about half the number as on the Transatlantic, maybe 250 guests.  Following the reception our group went up to the Brass Anchor for lunch.  I had a hamburger ($5+) and a coke, later a beer.  Dessert was a double dip ice creme cone: Rum Raisin & Banana.  Nice sitting on deck 6…we saw lots of people walk by heading to the 3:00 pm opera.  It’s La Boheme and I saw it last cruise…and we all know she dies in the end…so I had cabin time. Unlike yesterday, no sun today so no real balcony time…too cool outside.  I did have the door open a bit for some sea air.  Friends met at the Brass Anchor this evening, we ended up winning a Trivia Contest while we were waiting for our 7:30 pm dining reservations. We won 6 nylon MSC travel bags...same as the Black card gifts...so gave most away to othrs.  Tonight we ate at the Kaito Teppanyaki Restaurant as our group tends to do on cruises of late.  You have a choice of three menus and I went the Samurai Menu ($39+) that includes: Sushi & Sashimi, Samurai Tempura, Seasonal Greens, Vegetables, Goma Dressing, White Meso Soup, Silk Tofu, Wakame, Scottish Salmon, Tiger Prawns, Egg Fried Rice, Beef Sirloin, Japanese Pumpkin Custard, Caramelized  Ananas, Ginger Ice Creme, Mint Pesto.  I also enjoyed a nice Kirin beer.  I'm not sure what every items was on the menu, but I ate it all.  It was quite a meal and show by the Teppanyaki Chef.  It was a fun experience I’m very glad we did it.  Lots of activity on board this final elegant night.  It’s a really special ship.  Several of the crew thought I was going all the way to Miami, so some good byes already, the crew has been nothing but great to me.  I retired to cabin and read up on debarkation material and updated this blog.  It was a nice and easy sea day on the MSC Meriviglia.

Thursday  October 17  /  at Sea  /  Day 10
Best Wait Team...ever
Really rolling seas overnight and all morning with very high winds.  I slept pretty well and was up by 7:30 am and soon off to the Panorama Restaurant for a very nice breakfast. My final hot milk, three eggs sunny side up, ham, bacon, potato, toast, and fruit plate of the cruise. Good table mates and good service at the center table aft.  So I had a first hand view of the high seas from deck six aft. It was quite a ride with everything coming to a standstill at one particular drop of the ship and subsequent wave.  All good though.  After breakfast it was cabin time…then I went up to the Sky Lounge for some Ginger Ale and ice.  I have internet time left so using it.  I met the boys at Brass Anchor at 1:30 and stayed through the 4:00 pm Trivia.  Didn’t come close to a win this time, but I had lunch…the burgers there are good, the hot dogs just so-so but a fun afternoon.  Almost forgot about my traditional Hugo Spritz but managed two of those before leaving.  My luggage tags were delivered so time to get serious about packing.  Even though is was windy all day I think we will be close to arrival time.  I went to the Theater production show this evening: Meraviglioso Amor a show featuring romantic Italian love songs.  Of course Con te Partiro brings down the house as a finale. It was a fun happy show.  It was also Italian night in the dining room.  I ordered: Arancini Sicilian-Style, Tricolor Salad (red-white-green for Italian flag), Lasagna Bolognese, and Chicken Breast Parmigiana, a hearty meal with Lemon Delight for dessert. It was hard to say good-bye to our wait team Julius and Christopher were great for four cruises.  Julius is among the best waiters I have ever had…wait for it…in 150 cruises.  Great waiter and great guy, we were very lucky.  Unfortunately I HAVE to go straight back to the cabin to pack.  Bags out by midnight.  It was a great final sea day on the MSC Meraviglia.  An end to my B2B2B2B, Forty Day, Four cruise adventure.

Friday  October 18  /  New York City  /  Debarkation
I was up late after putting bags out, but finally slept for 5+ hours.  I was up by 6:30 am and packed my backpack and went to my designated wait area by 7:30 am.  Using my experience and ‘keys to the ship’ I went off in a lesser used short line on deck 5 while the self-debark guests were leaving.  My checked bags were in a VIP area so I had access to them.  I was through U.S. Customs by 8:15 and on the airport shuttle about 8:30.  I had to wait a while on shuttle as I was actually first on board, but we were off by 9:30 and at the airport by 10:10.  I had TSA pre, upgraded my seats, check my bag, and was at my gate by 10:40 am.  Couldn’t have been any easier.  Not uneventful flights, but made it to Waco as scheduled with bags.  Stopped for Tex-Mex in Valley Mills and home at the ranch by 8:30 pm.

Ship
Maiden Voyage: 2012  I  Gross Tonnage: 139,400 tons
Passenger Capacity: 3959  |  Crew: 1325  I  Length: 333 meters
Max Cruising Speed: 27 knots  I  Avg Speed 23 knots
Installed power: Diesel (40,000kW)  I  Propulsion: Twin propellers
Godmother: Sophia Loren

Cabin
I have cabin 13250 a starboard side Balcony with extended balcony located on deck 13.  It is a spacious cabin for todays newer ships.  It has a push button safe, twin/queen beds, couch, two night stands, wall lighting at bed, a small refrigerator, seat at longer dresser/desk, and TV with interactive features.  There is a large wardrobe with two drawers upper shelves and large hanging area with two doors.  Bathroom is much larger with tub/shower, I think in a cruise cabin I prefer just a large shower.

Crew
The GS (Guest Services) staff is very friendly and nice. They had a lot of work this cruise too.  Our MDR waiter Julius is very efficient. My cabin steward was wonderful. Overall the crew is more friendly than the old MSC. Officers very friendly and helpful. Most cocktail servers and bartenders provided very good service, but there need to be more training with all the various drink packages that are available to guests. Lots of errors and confusion initially. It’s been a tough transition to the new American plans.

Dining / Food / Bars / Entertainment
Entertainment is the strong suit of MSC with very nice production shows and live music in most all venues. Cirque Du Soleil is a unique special show and you do pay a premium for that venue. Mixed reviews. In addition to the production shows they have ‘fun’ events scheduled every night in the various lounges. Also the Dome shows in the Galleria each night. The MDR dinners are good to very good, Buffet food is good to excellent depending on selections. The Marketplace pizza station, bread station, and salad bar are excellent. I tried two specialty restaurants…both good.  The MSC Meraviglia has some very beautiful lounges and bars with live entertainment, I tried to visit most. My favorites were the Sky Bar and the Brass Anchor this cruise.  This cruise we became a Coca-Cola ship…thank goodness.

New York City Problem
MSC is currently my cruise line of choice and MSC will have some growing pains along the way, but it will become one of the premier cruise companies very soon.  But the problems with embarkation in NYC needs to be addressed. IMHO I think the problems had more to do with: the local port workers/union/politicians/mob/bad planning…than MSC itself although they probably contributed.  There was a slow down, intentional or not, that caused so many guests to have to wait for hours to board.  The local cruise port agent or someone in MSC planning needs to anticipate potential problems with local authorities and port facilities.  I know it will go well in Miami especially when the new terminal is completed, but ports such as NYC and time requirements need to be reviewed.

Black Card — I received a dinner in a specialty restaurant, a Chocolate ship, two Cocktail Receptions, Champagne & Chocolate strawberries, a logo gift of a travel bag, a photograph, and more.   Good program.  About half the number of Black Cards (maybe 250) than on the transatlantic.
