This is my 9th time to sail on the Carnival Breeze, my 80th Carnival cruise, and my 157th cruise overall.  I am sailing with the Dear Wife (DW), our first cruise together in several years. 

Day One -- Saturday --  August 21, 2021 -- Galveston Embarkation

We have 10:30-11:00 embarkation time so we left the Ranch at 5:00 am for the 4+ hour drive to the Port of Galveston.  The timing was excellent as we arrived at EZ Cruise Parking at 9:30 an an hour before our scheduled check in window.  It was busy at the port as the Vista is also embarking guests today.  We were shuttled to the pier and entered the terminal before 10:30.  Our vaccination and tests were confirmed, then we went through security before arriving at the Carnival check-in counters.  I asked for a new photo since I had trouble with face recognition last cruise.  We were sitting in the waiting area by 10:50 am...yes perfect timing.  We were among the very first boarding at 11:00 and we were in our cabin on Lido deck within minutes.  I had a very nice Mongolian Wok bowl for lunch while the DW unpacked in the cabin.  We soon went to our Muster Station then back to Lido Marketplace and the Salad Bar.  I sampled the Elderflower Cake and DW had a Pizza for lunch.  I then unpacked, met our cabins steward Jesus, and we were settled in our home for five days by 1:00 pm.  Super...now Nap Time!  I did a walk around the ship before sail away just to check some activities.  Disc Jockey and dancers in the Lobby area, Fishbowls in the Red Frog Pub…but no more embark specials, and lots of activity since they no longer close down everything for boat drill.  We enjoyed a very nice sail away from the Balcony, we saw: the Carnival Vista, the Car Ferries, the new Royal Caribbean site, a huge Festival on the beach, Dolphins, and interesting Pelicans flying in formation over the ship.  About 5:30 we went down to the Alchemy Bar. It was great seeing the same group of Alchemists again from the July cruise, they are a great team. It was a very unique evening as the Alchemy was not very busy. Actually, for about 20 minutes we were the only two sitting at the bar. Great cocktails as usual.  At 6:45 the Breeze Band, IMHO currently the best band at sea, did thier first set. A very entertaining group. We took advantage of the opportunity to visit more with the Alchemists, especially my long-time friend Daniel and listen to the Band.  About 8:00ish we went to the Deli to eat. Since the DW is a vegetarian we tend to be more creative with dining options, more specialty and less MDR (Dining Room). She had a nice Grilled Cheese and I had a Meatball Sandwich and a good BLT. All with Fries, I did get a Tiramisu from Lido Marketplace for dessert. We retired to the cabin for needed rest and I enjoyed the ship rocking me to sleep. It was a FUN embarkation day on the Carnival Breeze.

Day Two  -- Sunday --  August 22, 2021 -- Fun Day at Sea
The seas were rolling overnight and I slept very well.  I enjoy an active sea especially at night.  I was up

Diamond Luncheon

early and using the WiFi package I purchased ($60) to update this blog and get news. It’s a beautiful morning at sea and I went out to my favorite place on the ship for breakfast: the Blue Iguana.  I had my Huevos Rancheros with two fresh fried eggs on top, pico de gallo, and watermelon slices.  I took an arepas (sweet cornbread & cheese) back to the cabin for the DW.  I did a walkabout around the decks and there are not really very many guests on board ship.  My guess is that we are less than 50% capacity.  Fantastic for those of us on board, but concerning for Carnival. I don’t think guests want to go to the trouble of a 72 hour covid pre-test for a short cruise, I know I canceled and consolidated all my remaining cruises into B2B cruises, that way I’m tested for more than one cruise at a time. Although fewer guests there are enough Diamond guests on board to have a luncheon and it was held at 11:00 am in the Sapphire Dining Room.  The Captain welcomed us on only the seventh cruise of the Breeze since restart and introduced the senior staff.  The menu was good, I ordered the Pork Belly appetizer, the Steak entree, and the unique chocolate Tres Leche dessert.  Very generous with the cocktails and numerous servers … I had my share of Carnival Cosmopolitans.  After the luncheon I had the second longest nap of my cruising life sleeping until 5:30 pm.  It was wonderful.  Our wake up call was the Captain making an announcement that we would be missing our port call to the Yucatan.  It seems that Hurricane Gloria disturbed the narrow channel to the long pier at Progreso.  At least we will have Cozumel, the Breeze had to cancel that on the previous cruise due to Hurricane Gloria. We later met and visited with friends that live near us then went to the Alchemy Bar for cocktails.  We had great seats at the bar to watch two sets by the Breeze Band, my now favorite band.  They were great as usual especially their Eagles tribute set.  We had a front row seats to see Anca and Lidja, the Alchemists, rock out with the band as well.  Tonight the Alchemy Bar was packed as usual, I guess last night was just an anomaly.  We made a dash to the Market Place Deli just before it closed at 11:00 pm.  DW had a Grilled Cheese, and I had a Reuben and a BLT, all with fries.  Great sandwiches.  So easy to return to our cabin since we are on the Lido deck.  It was a really FUN day at sea.

Day Three  -- Monday --  August 23, 2021 -- Fun Day at Sea

Showtime

Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well.  Today is our bonus sea day due to our port call being canceled.  I went to the Blue Iguana about 9:30 am for my usual breakfast and was soon joined by the DW who had a custom breakfast burrito.  Interesting people watching and pool not really too crowded with the lower guest count.  We did a walkabout to the Spa area, Serenity Deck, the Water Park, Tides pool deck and visited with the girls at Blue Iguana bar.  We ended up having a full morning of balcony time enjoying our Coca-colas and watching the sea.  We enjoyed watching some Sea gulls chase the Flying Fish, we are enjoying life and easily amused.  Wifi working much better than 1st July cruise and accessible from the balcony. I had a very nice Guy’s Burger for lunch and DW had Guy’s fries.  So convenient staying on Lido deck, I just popped over to Guy’s and brought them back to eat on the balcony. So easy.  Cabin time once it warmed up outside, so movies and nap time in the afternoon.  We went down to the Alchemy Bar for Aperitifs about 6:30 then to the Sapphire Dining Room for dinner.  Probably our only visit to the MDR this cruise but I wanted to go as it’s my favorite menu.  We were seated at great round table in the center of the room just ‘showtime’ was announced.  It was interesting.  Tonight I ordered the Linguini as an appetizer as well as the Meatballs then combine them for an even better appetizer.  I ordered the Steak entree and it was excellent.  Fantastic meal.  We intended to go back to the Ocean Plaza to hear the Breeze Band, but decided to take the evening off and rest for Cozumel the next day.  It was a FUN bonus sea day on the Carnival Breeze.

 

Day Four  -- Tuesday --  August 24, 2021 -- Isla Cozumel, Mexico

Slightly rolling seas as we transition from the Gulf of Mexico into the Caribbean Sea.  We were docked by 4:00 am as I believe they had a medical evacuation, I happened to be awake.  At 7:00 am they actually made an announcement that guests could actually leave the ship.  That got everyone moving.  I went to Blue Iguana as usual and was joined later by the DW.  I had my Huevos Rancheros with two fried eggs & pico de gallo and she had an open burrito of eggs, potatoes, guacamole, cheese, & sour creme.  Very good breakfast.  About 8:30 am we left the ship and made our way to the taxi stand and a took a taxi ($8) to San Miguel.  Our first stop was at the large Mexican flag and Memorial that extends into the sea. We scattered the ashes of a good cruising friend as per her wishes.  This is the second cruise friend who has done this.  We then made our way to the San Miguel Arcangel Church for some reflection.  Then to Farmacias Similares for various medications.  This has been our pharmacy of choice since they opened the Cozumel location several years ago.  It was now 10:00 am so off to Woody’s Bar and Grill for several hours.  Being my Cozumel HQ I was able to use their wifi to catch up on a lot of business and DW had adequate time to shop in the many shops in the downtown area.  The Mexican Coca-cola tastes so good here and we later had Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, and Chips as well as Bohemia cerveza, my favorite Mexican beer.  Thanks Woody’s.  DW was successful in getting a Guayaberas Shirt for me, a new Mexican hand-stitched blouse for herself, and a little Mexican dress for the granddaughter.  A successful day in San Miguel.  Since it was a very hot and humid day we decided to return to the ship early.  Upon return DW hit the Lido pool and I went down the Twister slide before joining her.  After cooling off I had a Guy’s Ringer burger and DW a mixed vegetarian bowl from Blue Iguana.  A very nice late lunch.  We also enjoyed some refreshing Bushwackers from the bar.  Time for short nap as we sailed away from Cozumel.  Later we visited with friends at the Casino bar and I took the opportunity to have a Pilsner Urquell beer.  One of my favorite beers in the world.  Alexandra the bartender & I both have made the beer pilgrimage to Pilsen.   We then went to the Alchemy and Ivanna made our cocktails this evening,,,very good.  We were going to see 88 Keys the show in the theater, but ended up getting a late snack from the Lido Marketplace.  They basically serve the same food items as on the MDR menu,  We then took the desserts back to the cabin and retired for the evening.  It was a great day in Cozumel and on the Breeze,  

 

Day Five  -- Wednesday --  August 25, 2021 -- Fun Day at Sea

Fairly smooth seas overnight and I slept fair.  I was up early and we have numerous thunderheads and thunder this morning.  I predict rain today.  Staying on Lido deck it was very easy for me to get early photos of the Towel Animal invasion.  Every lounger or space on Lido deck had a towel animal relaxing on it.  Very interesting display.  At least they beat the chair hogs. I had my usual Huevous Rancheros with fried eggs for breakfast and took some Arepas back for DW in the cabin. I have enjoyed our Lido location that makes this so easy.  We did some shopping in the Shoppes and I also bought a $100 gift card (minimum) at Cherry on Top as we will have access OBC this cruise.  At 11:30 we went to the Ovation Theater for the Platinum/Diamond event.  We had some Tito’s & Lemonade drinks and visited with new and old friends.  I was the most frequent guest with 557 days sailed on Carnival. We went up to deck 11 to Cucina de Capitano for lunch.  I had two different bowls of Pasta and extras, you can choose a wide variety of pastas, extras, and sauces, it was very good.  The afternoon was Cabin/Nap/Balcony time, the balcony was great...on on the shady side with beautiful weather all afternoon.  We went down to the Ocean Plaza and the Alchemy Bar at 6:00 just in time for the beginning of the Breeze Band’s final musical sets of the cruise.  Best of two worlds: Alchemy Bar cocktails and the best band at sea.  A very entertaining evening, the band really captures the audience over the course of the cruise…guests rush the stage after the finale for photos wi featuring th the band…something that happens at concert venues.  As is my new custom I had my final dinner at the Seafood Shack, I love the Lobster Rolls.  DW had a pizza.  We then went to the 9:30 Comedy Show in the Limelight theater featuring Chris Wiles.  He was good, first time I had laughed out loud at a Carnival Punchliner show in years.  We then retired to the cabin to pack for debarkation in the morning.  It was a great final sea day on the Carnival Breeze.

Debarkation -- Monday August 2nd

Smooth seas on our last night on board and I slept very well.  Up at 6:00 am just as we were entering the outer jetty at Galveston harbor. Time to pack. We had breakfast from the Lido Marketplace then went to the Diamond meet location by 7:15 am.  We were among the first off  the ship about 7:50 am.  Facial Recognition at US Border/Customs so easy going all the way off.  A short wait to fill Parking shuttle bus and soon at our car on on the road  A short stop at Buc*ees in Waller Texas (gas 2.59) and at the Ranch by 1:15 pm.

 

Crew / Staff


I found the crew to be great for the most part.  Housekeeping was cleaning constantly everywhere you looked.  Enjoyed the Officers and Crew I interacted with during the cruises. Our cabin steward Jesus was adequate.  Alchemists and other bartenders and servers all excellent.

  

Food / Drink


After 80 Carnival cruises the MDR food has become very routine to me and I really don’t get excited about it as I used to do. I do love the Mongolian Wok, Cucina de Capitano, Blue Iguana, the Deli, BBQ, or anything a little different.  I really don’t drink Pepsi at all and disappointed that they changed beverages. Of Course the Alchemy Bar is my favorite.



 

Cabin 


We had cabin 10261 a balcony on Lido deck by the forward elevators on starboard side.  Great location close to Lido deck activities.  The cabin has the usual Carnival layout with three closets, bed stand with lamp, push button safe, mini refrigerator, four dresser drawers, and stool at dresser/desk. A lot of floor space and good balcony location.

 

Ship


The Dream Class was not my favorite class of ship as initially they did not have a Guy’s Burger nor an Alchemy Bar, at least until the Carnival Magic.  But now I really like the Dream class.  They have all the 2.0 upgrades and some of the old favorites as the original style Mongolian Wok. Everything was ship shape as far as I could tell on board.  We are sailing well below capacity that actually makes it very nice for guests on board.  I believe Carnival is saying about 60% capacity, but I believe it only be half perhaps be lower.

This is my 7th & 8th time on the Carnival Breeze, my 78th & 79th Carnival Cruise Line cruises, and my 155th & 156th cruises overall.  I am sailing solo.  This is my first cruise in 16 months, since I was dragged off of the Carnival Dream in the middle of a B2B due to the Pandemic shutdown. 

 

Day One--Saturday--July 24th--Embarkation

When I completed the online boarding & health forms I had the earliest allotted boarding time of 10:30 -11:00 am.  That can be good or bad.  When I packed on the night before sailing (as usual) I discovered that I didn't have Khaki's or pants for the MDR.  I have a favorite pair of Khaki's that I called my "Eating Pants" for the past ten years.  They have been on lots of cruises and all over the world, but alas, they no longer fit me.  I have actually lost 92 pounds of weight since my last cruise.  So I had to leave very early to allow myself some time to go pants shopping before boarding the ship.  I was successful and actually at EZ Cruise Parking by 10:15 am.  It was busy as the Vista is also sailing today, but soon I was shuttled over to the Breeze and walked to the line for Check-in.  There was a short line for initial security and vaccination check, then to the next station where you have your bags sent through the security x-ray machines.  Then you go upstairs to the actually Carnival check-in area.  Wasn't busy at all and there was only about 100+ people in the waiting area.  I only just sat down when they called for guests in suites, then the A-1 boarding passes.  It was only 11:00 am.  An amazingly smooth process.  One small hold-up at the final check point...Face recognition did not work for me as they used my passport photo and I look so different with the weight loss. With that fixed I was onboard and I dropped my bags at the cabin.  It was already cleaned and ready so I was able to spend a few minutes as I had carried my bag with me through this process.  It was off to Lido Deck and the Mongolian Grill.  I was among the first if not the first through.  You can select your own vegetables and noodles as usual and they did a great job preparing the dish.  I looked at the buffet and it looked very good, there was Italian food in the specialty area.  I went down to my Muster Station to check-in for safety drill.  This is so much easier.  Then I watched guests board the ship at the Lobby Bar...always interesting.  I did return to the Lido deck and the Dessert Station to see if there were any new masterpieces and they did not disappoint.  An Elderberry and Vanilla Cake...it was fantastic.  I went to see the Lido aft pool area and saw my friend Daniel working the bar.  It was really good seeing him, I was able to visit with him about my trip to Romania.  Then I finally returned to my cabin to hang my clothes and set it up for my cruise.  I have a 1A interior, but a lot of room especially for a solo guest.  Even though there is no formal Muster Drill, they still make ship-wide announcements about 3:00 pm...so a bit difficult to nap.  I was lazy and watched sail away from my cabin TV, but I was able to start this review and relax after an early and already long day.  I went to the Alchemy Bar about 6:30 for Apéritifs and had some lovely Elderflower based cocktails.  The Alchemy Bar has to share space with the Ocean Plaza so not as intimate, but certainly entertaining as the Alchemist went with the flow and rocked out to the great band performing.  You meet the nicest guests at the Alchemy as well.  I had a nice table on lower level of the Blush Dining Room.  My card said Table 1 that I presume is code for “see the Maitre’D” and I was taken straightaway by the assistant Maitre”D who I knew from previous sailings.  Dinner was good.  I order two Shrimp Cocktails, the Smoked Pablano & Corn Soup, the Braised Beef Brisket entree, and the Strawberry Creme for dessert.  I was hoping for an improvement on the Shrimp Cocktail and no it wasn’t…very bland.  The soup was very good as was the entree.  The brisket was very tender and I had asked for horseradish that added some tang.  Very enjoyable meal.  I know there was a lot of activities on board, but I retired to the cabin, made some notes, and was soon fast asleep.

Day Two--Sunday--July 25th—Fun Day at Sea
Very calm seas and I slept very well in my interior cabin, very dark and quiet.  I do use the forward camera on the TV as a night light,  I was awake about 7:15 am and went up to the Blue Iguana about 7:45 for my favorite breakfast of Huevos Rancheros and fresh eggs.  It was great and a beautiful morning and beautiful blue seas.  So nice.  Many guests were enjoying the early morning calm before it gets so busy on the Lido deck. I went to the Tides Bar on Lido aft to purchased my Cheers Package and ordered a Bloody Mary. I sat at a nice aft facing table and enjoyed the morning view and sea air.  Very nice.  I attended the Diamond Luncheon at 11:00 am and it was fantastic.  So much better than a Diamond cocktail party.  First you have your photo taken with the Captain, then seated for lunch.  I had a great table with new and old friends. I ordered the Pork Belly appetizer, the Steak entree, and the Tres Leches dessert.  All the food was excellent as was the service.  There was basically a cocktail server for every two tables so I took advantage.  A very FUN luncheon.  It was now nap time and I set a personal record for my longest nap on a cruise, I slept for five hours…amazing and refreshing.  When I woke after 6:00 pm it was already time for Apéritifs at the Alchemy and then dinner.  Thank goodness I have late dining.  Tonight I ordered: the Spaghetti Carbonara as a starter, the Prime Rib entree, and the Creme Brûlée for dessert.  All were very good.  since I was rested I did a little walk about the ship, the Piano Bar was busy as well as other venues, but ended up at the Alchemy Bar for late cocktails.  The entertainers especially the band were again very good in the Ocean Plaza.  It was a fun and refreshing day on the Carnival Breeze.

 

Day Three--Monday--July 26th—Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico 

Calm seas again overnight and I slept well, I was up early for my 7:30 am meet time for my excursion.  I’m doing the Carnival Mayapan Ruins, Lazy River Tubing and Cavern Swim.  I found the meet spot and luckily I was one Bus 1 and even had the front seat to myself.  Sweet.  We were off by 8:00 am and with an hour and a half drive arrived at Cenotes Hacienda Mucuyché an old Hacienda built over an old Mayan cenote.  They have beautiful grounds and developed the cenote as an attraction.  It is very well done with steps and still preserving the old were possible.  You float down a lazy river that includes both old caverns and a new waterway.  This takes you to the entrance of the old original Mayan cenote,  You’re given masks so that you can see the bottom and stalagmites through the crystal clear water.  Quite amazing but difficult to describe.  It was an experience I’m glad I could enjoy. Once we got out of the water we walked to the very nice restaurant on the grounds,  We were served an authentic Mayan meal.  Very similar to soft tacos that have become so popular now.  The early lunch was delicious and very welcome since I skipped breakfast.  They even had Bohemia, my favorite but harder to find Mexican beer.  Our next stop was at the Mayan Ruins of Mayapan.  Several pyramids and many out buildings.  I’ve climbed many Mayan ruins in the Yucatan so I found a nice shady tree with a breeze and watched others make the trek up to the top.  I did do a walkabout of the grounds though.  We were returned to the ship well before our 3:30 back on board time and 4:00 pm sail away.  I went directly to Guy’s Burgers for my first burger of the cruise.  Super good.  Only downside is the Pepsi now being served, IMHO Burgers go with a Coke.  Cabin time to rest and work on blog while my memory is clear.  I bought a new iPhone power cord at Pixels, I needed it and I was glad they one.  Alchemy Bar for my usual before dinner drinks and it was FUN, the girls are amazing.  I have a group of usuals to visit as well.  Not as many at dinner as usual on a port day in Mexico.  I ordered the Linguine as starter, the Tenderloin steak, and two desserts: the Bitter & Blanc, and the Grilled Pineapple.  The Linguine was excellent I will get that as the entrée on the next cruise if the menu is repeated.  Only a brief walk about to see the evening entertainment.  Comedy Club, Piano Bar, the Love & Marriage show and more were on this evening. Climbing the Cenotes wore me out today, so I retired by 10:00ish.   A great day in the Yucatan.

Day Three--Tuesday--July 27th—Isla Cozumel, Mexico

Just a little rolling of the sea once we passed from the Gulf of Mexico into the Caribbean Sea overnight.  I slept very well.  I was up early and had my breakfast at the Blue Iguana before 8:00 am, a bar server recognized me and made sure I had a Bloody Mary even before the Bar officially opened.  Thank you.  I have enjoyed the Cheers, but may not do it next cruise…too short a cruise.    I had a visit with Guest Services about the sucky internet, I may not do that either, not working well at all.  I was off for shore and not busy at all leaving after the rush, no one to share taxi but that’s OK.  No haircut needed and I was at Woody’s about 10:00.  Nelly is in Texas, but saw me on camera.  Really the fastest internet on the island at Woody’s so I was able to take care of business, update and load my Blog, and see photos and real news.  The Mexican Coca-cola really tasted good too especially since Carnival only has Pepsi.  I had some great special guacamole and pico de gallo and enjoyed the live music at Woody’s.  On the way to get a taxi I said hello to my barber and told him I’d be back on Saturday, but I may be able to wait until August 21st cruise. This is really the earliest I have returned to the ship in Cozumel, but I was ready.  Easy too since I was early.  I went straight to the Red From Run bar and ordered a water and Bushwacker frozen drink to cool off.  It worked too.  I then had a nice Mongolian Wok for a late lunch.  Nice.  A shower and then relaxing in a Carnival robe that actually fits was wonderful.  I went to the Lobby about 5:30 and heard the String Trio, they were very good. I stopped at the Cherry on Top and purchased two $100 gift cards, by doing so I use my OBC and will be able use the cash on future cruises.  Off to the Alchemy for aperitifs about 6:30, met my neighbor coming from her cabin and I now I have another addition to ‘Ray’s Cruise Stories’.  Ask me when you see me.  Tonight I asked the Alchemist to prepare whatever they wished to serve me…turned out very well.  Interesting selections.  Not as busy due to it being Cozumel night so easy to visit with the regulars too. my best friends for the week.  The MDR was very empty, we only had 4 at our 10-top table, typical as less than half overall attending dinner.  Tonight I ordered the Baked Onion Soup, sampled the Alligator beignets, Lasagna as a starter,  I ordered a NY Strip Steak from the Steakhouse menu ($20 up charge), and a Fruit Plate for dessert.  The soup was meh, but everything else good, especially the steak, better than my last trip to the steakhouse.  Service was good, the waiter in next station had no guests so she assisted ours so a good time to order something off menu.  After dinner I went on a walkabout, I met my friend Daniel’s girl friend at the Steakhouse, tried to get into the comedy club, but it was over packed for last two showed, Piano Bar busy too as was the Disco, first time to check it out.  I ended up back at the Alchemy Bar and continued the Alchemists choice.  Very interesting smaller group of guests and first time I actually closed down an Alchemy in many cruises…although in fairness I think they may have closed early.  Actually a outer deck stroll to see the aft and moon…very nice I should do that every night.  A long day in Cozumel and the Carnival Breeze.

Day Five--Wednesday--July 28th—FUN Day at Sea 

Smooth Seas overnight and I slept well.  I woke early and working on review and some photos for the Alchemy Bar Fan page, but alas no internet again this morning.  I went to the MDR for the Sea Day Brunch about 8:30 and had a nice breakfast:  Eggs Benedict, Bacon, Hash Browns, and FrenchToast…all very good.  At 10:00 am I went to the Limelight Lounge to get my Covid test for the B2B guests, this is required because of the foreign country visit within 14 days.  It was simple enough with a nose swab.  I had a Bloody Mary on deck and was reminded about the Platinum/Diamond Party at 11:30am, I almost missed it.  I asked the Hotel Director earlier if I was high guest and he said no, but when Cookie the CD read off the days cruised as 5 pause 4 (at this time I knew it was me) … 8.  Ray McDonald with 548 days is our senior experience cruiser.  It was a surprise as I wasn’t expecting it and almost didn’t attend. The same plaque/coaster as usual.  I had a nice Reuben Sandwich for lunch with friends then stopped at the Casino Bar as it’s the only bar that has my favorite beer: Pilsner Urquell. I saw Alexandria the Alchemist I had on my previous cruise on the Dream.   The open decks are packed, I’ve never seen so many in the pool drinking…and it was that way all day.  Cabin time for a short nap…internet still sucks.  It cooled off somewhat with cloud cover so about 4:00 pm I went back to the Lido aft to enjoy the view and sea air.  Very nice.  I went back through the Red Front Pub and Alchemy and it was already packed…guests are wanting to experience the bar before leaving.  Still a lot of regulars and I did have one cocktail before heading to the cabin to clean up for dinner.  I had dinner in the Sapphire Dining Room (the Your Time MDR) with new friends.  Not really busy and they did the Baked Alaska march and sang the Carnival farewell song.  Tonight I ordered the Cobb Salad, the Penne Pasta as a starter and a steak from the Steakhouse.  Good company but the steak was rare and most know this Texas Rancher eats his meat cooked.  They did refund the up charge.  Also they also refunded my internet fees. this evening, that works well as I now had OBC available on my account for a tip for all the Alchemists.  So of course I had to have a cocktail from each Alchemist in order to get the gratuity to them…as if I wouldn’t have had three cocktails anyway!  A stroll on outer deck to see the moon and enjoy the sea air before retiring…I know I will sleep well this night.  It was a FUN final sea day on the Carnival Breeze.

Day Six of B2B / Day One of 2nd Cruise—Thursday—July 29th—Galveston  

Smooth seas overnight and I did sleep well. We were already docked when I woke at 7:00 am and it looks to be a perfect day in Galveston.  I went up to Blue Iguana for a nice breakfast and test my telephone.  They were getting guests off the ship very quickly.  The B2B guests met at 9:00 am the earliest I've ever seen, but it was justified.  We were given our new Sail & Sign Cards and soon we were told they were ready for us to walk through Customs. There were about 30 of us and the customs official just looked at Passports and we walked strait back on the ship.  All of this by 10:00 am.  Wow.  We had cocktails and a photo taken and then had the ship to ourselves for an hour.  I did the Muster Drill at 10:45 am so easy with no guests and the new system. I had lunch at Cucina Del Capitano on deck 11, first time there, my pasta bowl was very good.  I finally got a decent wifi signal on my iPhone from the outer aft deck and updated several Facebook pages and this blog.  Its also interesting watching the new guests explore the ship too.  I had some cabin time but went for a snack and ended up with a Guy’s burger…certainly will fill me until late dinner. I was on outer deck 5 using the telephone when we pushed off the dock 20 minutes early so I stayed and watched a proper sail away through Galveston Harbor.  I noticed the construction of the new Royal Caribbean terminal located on the east end near the ferry terminals.  They will host a mega Oasis Class ship there in the fall of next year.  The dolphins gave their usual escort out to the jetty, always nice to see dolphins.  On the way back in I pass the casino and noticed that many if not most of the machines had someone sitting at them holding their favorite machine until casino opens I assume. I have not really noticed that before.  I know we have a lot of guests sailing with Casino fares. About 6:00 pm I went up to the Ocean Plaza to hear the feature soloist perform, I had heard her from the background of the Alchemy but not really sat and listened, she was very good,  At Alchemy I had two lovely cocktails prepared by Lidija, loved the fragrance of the basil leafs as I took each drink.  Thanks.  I have the same table in the Blush Dining Room so easy to get around the crowd and get seated.  Tonight I ordered the MultiGrain Cranberry bread, the Mixed Greens salad, the Roasted Tomato Soup, and the Braised Beef Brisket.  The soup and salad were best.  The usual activities on the ship: Welcome Show, Comedy Club, Piano Bar, and more.  A busy but fast and well organized embarkation day on the Carnival Breeze.

Day Seven of B2B / Day Two of 2nd Cruise—Friday—July 30th—FUN Day at Sea
Smooth seas and I slept well.  I went up to Lido for sea air about 8:00 am and enjoyed a Bloody Mary. 

The early mornings and evenings are very nice on deck.  I had a proper breakfast in the MDR, the French Toast is so good as was the service.  Eggs Benedict, Hash Browns, & Bacon just good.  Lido deck getting busy, but I only notice two adults in the two Hot Tubs on exterior Promenade deck, a good possible option. The private Diamond Function was held in the Limelight Lounge at 11:00 am.  Only about 24 guests.  We were lucky enough to get the luncheon last cruise.  I was lucky enough to have a long conversation with the Captain.  The assistant GSM assured me that the internet was now working so when I returned to the cabin I purchased it for this cruise.  So far so good, but there are some more secure websites (bank or brokerage) I cannot access.  Before 2:00 pm I went for lunch at the Pig & Anchor BBQ.  It was excellent as was my Pilsner Urquell beer.  A good combination. I had cabin time in afternoon and actually wifi improved so some business, I booked a cruise for myself and completed an Alaska booking for a long time client.  About 6:30  I went for aperitifs at the Alchemy Bar … Anca, Lidija, and Daniel do a wonderful job.  Interesting group of regulars forming.  Tonight is the formal dinner and only two showed up at our ten top doubtful they will for rest of cruise although Natalie the Maitre’d told me that actually 11 are assigned to the table. Tonight I ordered the Italian Wedding Soup, Spaghetti Carbonara, and the Prime Rib entree, it was very good but repetitive for me.  After dinner I intended to have a walkabout, but went by Alchemy because I knew the best entertainers on the ship, The Breeze Band, were performing and they had a packed crowd in Ocean Plaza.  As I reached the Bar a person abandoned my favorite seat so it was meant to be.  I only ordered two Spritzers (little alcohol) but stayed to watch the band play two sets.  The band was great and there was somewhat of a show among guests as well.  All entertaining.  I retired when the band finished.  It's obvious from observing today that there much fewer guests than last cruise, my guess is about 2400 at most.  It was busy but not overly packed anywhere...I do like that.  It was an interesting and entertaining day on the Carnival Breeze.

Day Eight of B2B / Day Three of 2nd Cruise—Saturday—July 31st—Cozumel Mexico

Smooth seas overnight and I slept well. Today we have the only port of this cruise.  I went up to Lido and had my favorite breakfast at the Blue Iguana Grill.  The breakfast burritos there are also really special.  I debarked from mid gangway again that is just below my cabin…so easy.  I took a taxi into San Miguel and first stop was the little San Miguel Arcangel Church to say hola to Jerry and give some thanks for everything.  Then I spoke with Martin, my barber, and will see him for a haircut on August 21st.  Then to my Woody’s HQ for business.  Thanks to everyone there for making it so easy on me.  I booked three cruises from Woody’s this cruise…love their internet.  Same guacamole, pico de gallo, and chips as last week…so good.  I love the new taxi stand by the Church, it makes it so easy to get a taxi back to the ship. I got the old 'no change' spiel, but I took it in pesos...ha!  Back on the ship an hour early so relaxing cabin time. I went to Guest Services to apply a Carnival Gift Card about 5:00 pm and stayed to watch the Steel Drum musician, very different with an electrified steel drum and entertaining.  I did get a foo-foo drink too, a Bushwacker.  I made it to Alchemy for aperitifs by 6:30 and it was a Fun group, Daniel made a special cocktail for me as well.  As usual on Cozumel night very few in the MDR,  I had an all Italian meal, the featured Fresh Italian cocktail, the Baked Meatball appetizer, Minestrone Soup, and the Linguine with Italian Sausage entree.  I ordered a second Meatball dish to add to the Linguine...excellent. It was the best meal of the cruise.  I skipped dessert as I wanted to return to Alchemy and see the Breeze Band playing in Ocean Plaza. I have had the opportunity to hear the Carnival Breeze Band for several days now.  They have only been together and playing for live audiences for about seven days before I first saw them and I have seen them that many times since. They have improved each and every day and even in this short time I can say they are the BEST band I have ever seen and heard on a cruise ship in my 156 cruises.  Tonight they had a standing ovation following their last set and did two encores.  Unbelievable.  People will be booking the Breeze to to just see this group.  They ARE that good.  The bonus…if your lucky you can see them from the Alchemy Bar.  It was a very FUN day in Mexico and on the Carnival Breeze.

Day Nine of B2B / Day Four of 2nd Cruise—Sunday—August 1st—FUN Day at Sea

Smooth seas, but didn't sleep as well.  I have mentioned smooth seas each night and I should note that my cabin location of low and center will be the smoothest location on the ship.  If your prone to motion issues this is the location for you. I went up to the Lido deck about 8:00 am and all the Towel Animals were out on the Lido Deck…in the loungers, chairs, and around the pool.  Looks good.  I was heading of course to the Blue Iguana, seems my secret fresh egg spot has been discovered, several guest waiting, but I had already decide to do a breakfast burrito this morning.  It was very good. I spent the morning in the water, first one of the Spa’s outside on Deck five that I had to myself for 40 minutes, then up to the Breeze Waterpark.  Yes I did the Twister slide…WOW…it was exhilarating.  Still got it!  I had cabin time and took a nap in the afternoon.  I did a walk about and picked up my Diamond goodies (luggage tags & pin) for both cruises at Pixels then had a Bushwacker drink at the Lobby Bar.  At 6:15 I went to the Alchemy for my Aperitifs.  The Breeze Band was having a small set and then a full set at 7:00 pm.  You already know how I feel about them…the best.  Alchemy was fun, a very nice group of regulars, always nice to meet new friends.  What a great combination with the best band and best Alchemists in one spot.  I said my good-byes early and went to Lido deck and the Seafood Shack, sat with new friends and enjoy a wonderful Lobster Roll.  What a way to end the evening.  Back to cabin to rest, pack, and finalize this review.  It was a great final Sea Day on the Carnival Breeze.

Debarkation -- Monday August 2nd

Smooth seas on our last night on board.  I was up very early and packed then went to the Lido for breakfast.  Wow, Eggs Benedict cooked perfectly, bacon, Hash Browns, and milk.  My meet time was 7:15 am and I was there in time, but we didn't start debark until closer to 8:00 am.  Facial Recognition at U.S. Customs so that was easy.  I was to my car at EZ Cruise and on the road just after 8:30 am.  One stop at Bucc*ees in Waller for fuel and Dr Pepper and was home at the Ranch at 1:09 pm. 

Crew / Staff
I found the crew to be great.  My cabin steward Aiza was very good. Housekeeping was cleaning constantly everywhere you looked.  Enjoyed the Officers and Crew I interacted with during the cruises.  Natalie a Maitre’d in Blush MDR is one of my all time favorites

Food / Drink
After 79 Carnival cruises the MDR food has become very routine to me and I really don’t get excited about it as I used to do. I do love the Mongolian Wok, Cucina de Capitano, Blue Iguana, the Deli, or anything a little different.  The Cheers package was good for me this cruise.  I really don’t drink Pepsi at all and disappointed that they changed beverages.  Of Course the Alchemy Bar is my favorite.

Cabin
I had cabin 1351 an upper/lower bed on deck one by the center elevators on starboard side.  Great location if you’re prone to seasickness.  The cabin has the usual Carnival layout with three closets, bed stand with lamp, push button safe, mini refrigerator, four dresser drawers, and stool at dresser/desk. A lot of floor space.  Perfect for a solo guest.

Ship
The Dream Class was not my favorite class of ship as initially they did not have a Guy’s Burger nor an Alchemy Bar, at least until the Carnival Magic.  But now I really like the Dream class.  They have all the 2.0 upgrades and some of the old favorites as the original style Mongolian Wok. Everything was ship shape as far as I could tell on board.  We are sailing well below capacity that actually makes it very nice for guests on board.  I believe Carnival is saying about 70%, but I believe it to perhaps be lower.

 Carnival Dream (almost a B2B) Cruise Review

Weather:  Very good all four days sailed.

This is my 2nd time on the Carnival Dream, my 77th Carnival Cruise Line cruise, and my 154th cruise overall.  I am sailing solo.  I really need this diversion as the U.S. Stock Market is suffering it’s worst decline since the 1987 crash due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Day Zero--Wednesday--Travel
I booked this cruise about 11:00 am today. Due to the Coronavirus scare creating guest cancellations Carnival offered a very nice Travel Agent fare so I took advantage.  I made quick arrangements, and left the ranch about 5:15 pm arriving in Alvin, Texas at friends about 9:15 pm.  The reason to drive down early was due to a Fog Warning I received for Embark morning.

Day One--Thursday--March 12--Embarkation

I was up early enough 8:00-ish and saw that yes the Dream was delayed by fog. First Carnival notification said they would be docked by 9:30 am.  I was advised by Carnival that it was officially only a one hour delay but still planned for later arrival.  My friends and I had a great 10:00am brunch at Juanita's Taqueria in Alvin, I had Migas.  Much better to be waiting off site than in a fog delay mess.  My friends dropped me off about 2:00 pm. There were lines but Priority went faster especially if guests cooperated and allowed you to pass. Most did.  Once I reached the Priority door it was fairly smooth for a fog delayed embarkation.  They paid very close attention to your health form and your documents.  Because I had booked within 24 hours I had to be screened twice then extra security.  The check-in person escorted me through the luggage scanning process then I was searched.  Only then did she give me my boarding pass.  It didn’t take long though, so glad I waited out most of the Priority guests.  Once onboard I went down one deck to Main and my Cove balcony to drop my one bag and my diet coke.  Unfortunately no Sail & Sign key card. I left my bag at the door and went up to Guest Services and the line was very long…so I went to the lobby bar and had a nice water to cool off, relax, and observe.  I spied a GS lady and requested some help, as I had enough lines for the day.  She soon returned with my card…thanks…mini-crisis averted.  I  returned to the cabin and got things squared away quickly.  I have my first Cove balcony, I have friends that really love them so I’ll get my first experience.  The cabin is standard size, maybe even larger than the norm.  It’s already time for muster drill so I went up to deck 4 and station 4B in the upper Crimson Restaurant.  Following muster I went to the Alchemy Bar on Promenade Deck.  Soon my friend who tipped me about the special rates on this cruise came by…he told me the next sailing has the same rates.  My mind is working quickly now.  I called my friends minding the truck, minding the dog, and the DW with my idea and yes I booked the next cruise.  All from the Alchemy Bar.  My friend encouraged me to get a secret balcony on Lido deck so I went up to deck ten to find it…it will be amazing.  My thanks to all the friends that helped.  It was almost 6:00 pm and I’m on Lido so it’s Guy’s Burger time before they close at 6:00pm.  Good, but not as good as the Imagination last month.  The condiments were out as usual, that answers one question I had.  Staff are serving the guests in the MarketPlace buffet.  Something they really should do all the time.  I had some very nice fruit for dessert.  I returned to the cabin just as we were having our late sail away.  The cove balcony is different…you are so close to the water, and the pelicans were flying so close at this lower level I could almost reach out and touch them.  Very nice experience.  After a telephone call to the DW before I lose service I had cabin time…I established my internet package, then finalized my new booking for next cruise.  I did clean up and go up to the Alchemy Bar about 9:00 pm and Nikola Boškovski prepared me a very nice cocktail.  Thanks Nikola.  I retired by 10:30 after a very busy day in Alvin, Galveston, and on the Carnival Dream.

Day Two--Friday--March 13. 2020--Fun Day at Sea

Very calm seas in the Gulf of Mexico and I had a very good nights sleep.  I woke about 7:30 am and used the internet…stock market futures are up.  I finished my review from yesterday and posted it and bought a few shares of cruise stocks: RCL ($30) and CCL ($16).  Nice and sunny today and quickly warming as I went up to Lido about 9:00 am for breakfast at the Blue Iguana. No line and I had two fresh fried eggs on my Huevos Rancheros.  Pico de Gallo and Cheese added from condiment bar as well as watermelon slices.  Very good.  I bought some candy from Cherry on Top and had some cabin time until my 11:00 am meeting with the Captain at the Coffee Bar.  First time I attended a Diamond Gathering event there.  They had sweets and donuts and I ordered a couple of Bellinis as well.  There were five Diamonds, The Captain, Hotel Director, and two staff officers attended.  It was actually nice.  I wore my new Gadsden Flag t-shirt that read “Don’t Cough on Me”.  Captain loved it.  I was looking forward to a basic Mongolian Grill lunch on the Dream.  On Vista class ships you get the Grill in JiJi’s restaurant.  On the Dream Class ships it’s in the MarketPlace buffet.  Due to health concerns they have fewer ingredient selections and a staff member fills your bowl of noodles and vegetables.  It was still very good.  I had two bowls, one with Szechwan (really hot) spices and one with Thai spices (medium). It was perfect weather and the pool deck was full although comfortable.  My t-shirt got a lot of attention out there too.  I had cabin and movie time then sat in the sun on the balcony for half an hour as it’s supposed to be good for your immune system.  I did enjoy the sun sitting in the west.  The water seems to go by so much faster when you have a low Cove Balcony.  Very different seems we are really going fast.  The late afternoon was spent running down rumors that Carnival was suspending operations.  Royal Caribbean and Norwegian announced it.  Nothing from Carnival.  President Trump let the cat out of the bag in one of his press conferences about 6:00 pm when he announce that all cruise lines were suspending at midnight.  Carnival actually didn’t announce anything until after 7:00 pm.  Well there goes the B2B.  I guess we’re lucky we are continuing on to Cozumel.  I had a nice cocktail at the Alchemy Bar then dinner with friends in the Crimson Restaurant.  It was the formal dinner and I ordered: two Shrimp Cocktails, the Fusilli Mushroom Creme Pasta, the Prime Rib with Baked Potato and Horseradish, and the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake and Fruit Plate for dessert.  The food was just OK in my opinion…service was great though.  After dinner I confirmed my cruise cancellation and retired soon afterward. It was a FUN day on the Carnival Dream.

Day Three—Saturday—March 14, 2020--Cozumel. Mexico

Another good nights sleep and again very smooth seas as we entered the Caribbean.  I was up about 7:00 am. and checked emails and the internet.  I went to breakfast in the Scarlet Dining Room about 8:00 am as we were approaching Cozumel and the Pier.  I had a nice hearty breakfast:  Three eggs over easy, Avocado Toast, Hash Browns, Bacon, Corned Beef Hash, White Toast, Banana, Melon, Tomato Juice, and Hot Milk.  It was great.  I left the cabin about 10:00 am and debarked.  We are the only Carnival ship at Puerto Maya today so debark was very easy.  No line for taxi’s and in fact I had my own to San Miguel  ($8) arriving about 10:15.  I walked over to Angelo's Barber Shop and Martin was just arriving.  I had a great haircut and visit then walked to Farmacias Similares to check on medications…oh no…you can no longer purchase medications without a prescription.  I found this true at all the legit drug chains.  Skipped my Pedicure today as I have spent all my $ purchasing Carnival stock.  Seriously you can now get one+ shares of CCL for the price of a pedi. It has dropped so much during this virus scare.  I made it to Woody’s about 11:00 am and my table was reserved for me.  I enjoyed a cool water, live music, some nice Bohemia beers, and the fastest internet WiFi I have had in months.  I updated 51 iPhone app’s in 20 minutes…wow.  I did have an excellent Chicken Chimichanga with Frijoles and Pico de Gallo for for an early dinner...it was great.  I was able to download a new Apple operating system for my laptop, I could not do it at the ranch.  I was worried the BIG file would not finish in time as I wanted to leave at 4:00 p.m. since we have a 4:30 back-on-board time, but it finished at 3:45.  Woo Hoo.  I got a taxi at my usual location by Antonio’s and was back at Puerto Maya by 4:15.  Time for a few photos, then back on the ship…it went rather smooth with short lines at security and to board.  Once in the cabin I took a shower, fixed a coca-cola, and relaxed until sail away.  I really enjoyed the Cove balcony for sailing from Cozumel Island, the sound of the water is so magnified being so close.  I can see why they have the solid steel doors for high seas.  I was so relaxed I decided to order room service: two BLT’s one of my favorite Carnival meals.  They were delivered strait-away too.  With my diet coke I was set.  Amazingly not 20 minutes after I finished eating dinner a plate of fresh cookies were delivered to the cabin…wow dessert: Two Peanut butter with nuts, two Chocolate chip, and two Oatmeal & raisin.  Cookies moist and very good, I assume it was a Diamond gift.  I watched a movie, finished this review, and did some internet research before retiring.  It was a very productive and fun day in Cozumel.

Day Four—Sunday--March 15--Fun Day at Sea

Again smooth seas overnight.  I was up very early used the computer for a while then went back to sleep until about 9:30 pm.  The black out curtains work well.  I went to the MDR for the Sea Day Brunch about 10:00 am and no wait at all…good timing this morning.  I ordered:  the Steak & Eggs, Bacon, Hash browns, and the French toast. The waiter said they were behind on the steaks so a short wait, luckily all three men at the table ordered it. I enjoyed my Bloody Mary, remembering to use my free coupon.  When my meal was delivered the steak had grill marks but was very rare in the middle, the eggs were ordered over easy, but very hard.  Amazingly wrong all the way round.  Someone on staff must have seen me take a photo of the steak and eggs before I sent the plate away because soon the Matre’D was there with my plate apologizing.  He admitted the steak was basically raw. I enjoyed my French toast while they brought me a proper Steak & Eggs order.  I ended up with three perfect small filets and perfect eggs.  It worked out well enough.  A nice breakfast and I’m in no hurry today. I even had hot milk again.  The Matre’D sent me very nice Chocolate-covered Strawberries…huge beautiful ones and they were very good.  I had cabin and balcony time all afternoon, I’m not on the sun side today but very nice sitting in the cove protected from wind…so very pleasant.  At 3:00 pm I went to the MDR for Tea Time.  The Scones were great. Another beautiful day and guests were happy to be outdoors around the pool and getting fresh sea air.  It's been a different cruise with only four days, but I experienced a lot.  Another first for me on this cruise...I only brought ONE pair of shoes.  Worked as planned.  I had some more private balcony time then prepared for the evening.  This evening I had a nice cocktail at the Alchemy Bar, then went to the steakhouse at 8:00 pm for a very nice relaxing dinner.  I had a nice small Fried Avocado as palate starter and three breads and unique butter.  I ordered:  Heritage Berkshire Porkbelly with Apple & Walnut Preserves, Carrot Paper; Risotto with Crab, Mushroom, & Brown Butter; the Spice-rubbed USDA Prime Ribeye with Baked Potato & Trimmings and Onion Rings; for dessert: a Fresh Fruit Bowl.  A very nice premium meal.  After dinner I popped into the Piano Bar then walked around the Promenade Deck.  There was good entertainment everywhere: Ocean Plaza, Lobby, Disco, Comedy Club, Piano Bar, and I’m sure more.  Guests where really enjoying their last night on he ship.  I returned to the cabin finished todays blog notes and too tired to pack retired for the night.  It was a FUN sea day on the Carnival Dream.

Debarkation -- Monday--March 16, 2020 -- Galveston, Texas

Smooth seas overnight and I had best sleep of the cruise. We arrived back in Galveston very early, we were already docked when I woke just before 7:00 am.  I hopped up and quickly packed…only took 15 minutes.  I noticed that Diamond guests met at 7:30 for early walk off so I went there just to avoid lines and most guests. Although I had a later meet time with my ride it was just easier to go early.  I was actually the first one ‘dinged’ off the ship and was on the street about 7:40 am.  Smooth & easy.  Beautiful weather so I found a bench on the Strand and was able to get online and see some new videos of the family in Florida (no video with social internet package on the ship).  My friends came early and brought my truck so I was on the way by 8:30 am.  Thanks.  A stop at Chick-fil-A (drive through only) and gas in College Station and I was in Clifton by 1:00 pm.  I stopped at David’s for groceries and they had the basics I needed: bread, eggs, milk, and more.  They had a delivery that morning so I was lucky on timing.  I don't understand why people are hoarding food and toilet paper during this Coronavirus scare.  I was at the ranch before 2:00 pm.  The country side was very pretty as there are many different shades of green in the valley and hills.  Reminded me of the different colors of blue in the Caribbean waters around Cozumel.  Both are beautiful.

Crew / Staff
I found the crew to be good.  My cabin steward Marlon was very good. The girl from GS bailed me out with getting my card for me. They were cleaning constantly everywhere you looked.  They were a bit perplexed the last two day after the 30 day cancellation was announced, but carried on very well.

Food / Drink
First time I have sailed the Dream since the Guy’s Burgers and the Alchemy Bar were added.  The new extra bar in the Ocean Plaza helps the Alchemy a lot. After 77 Carnival cruises the MDR food has become very routine to me and I really don’t get excited about it as I used to do.

Cabin
I had cabin 2285 a cove balcony on deck two by the forward elevators on starboard side.  Great location if you like the Coves.  The cabin is the usual Dream Class layout with door at balcony, full couch, three closets, nice table, bed stands with lamps, push button safe, mini refrigerator, four dresser drawers, and stool at dresser/desk.

Ship
The Dream Class was not my favorite class of ship as initially they did not have a Guy’s Burger nor an Alchemy Bar, at least until the Carnival Magic.  But now I really like the Dream.  It has all the 2.0 upgrades and even a second bar in the Ocean Plaza that takes care of the beer/wine guests allowing the Alchemy to do the cocktail thing. Great.  I would go as far as saying the Carnival Dream is my favorite Carnival ship at this time.

This is my 2nd time on the Carnival Imagination, my 76th Carnival Cruise Line cruise, and my 153rd cruise overall.  I am sailing with the Dear Wife and many of my good cruise friends.

Day One—Sunday—February 16 — Embarkation

We are staying on the Queen Mary located next to the Long Beach Cruise Terminal so no rush this morning.  Check out is 11:00 am so we'll just walk over to the ship. Although the most direct route was blocked by a temporary fence for the Festival we rolled our bags over and checked them without trouble.  Then into the terminal for our check-in and security.  No crowd at all and we were on the ship by 11:30 am.  Easy Peasy.  We had a forward port hole cabin, E-7 on deck 7, the same I had when I sailed previously.  Not as big as the corresponding porthole on the Panorama, but nice.  We went up to Lido and all the friends began to arrive.  I had a double meat Guy’s Burger and it was excellent.  Best Guys in a long time…they actually cooked the meat as it is supposed to be…smashed on the grill and with a light crust.  Really proud of the chef, most don’t cook it long enough.  Ten of the thirteen  friends sailing this cruise came by so all is well on the Imagination.  It will be fun.  They just caulked our shower and DW was put off by the smell but that was almost remedied by the time we had a cocktail in the lobby.  Thank you Housekeeping. We unpacked and made ready for Boat Drill that was between 5:00 - 5:30 pm.  We were muster station A4 and met in the Theater on deck 8. It went well and easy to return to cabin afterward.  We went to the Alchemy Bar about 7:00 pm and the group showed before dinner.  For the second straight cruise they screwed up the dinning reservations.  Ten have a very good round top in center of MDR, and three a banquet a long way away.  Were adding one to the main table, and DW and I will make do on our own.  It’s fine, as a vegetarian DW prefers the Lido Marketplace anyway.  For dinner tonight I ordered: the Roasted Tomato Soup, the Lasagne as a starter, and the Honey Glazed Pork Loin entree.  For dessert the Strawberry Creme.  Entree was good, the rest just so-so.  We retired after dinner to the cabin…I had some business with Guest Services then started this review.  GS offered us a small upgrade due to the smell problem with the new caulking, but we passed, they did give us some drink vouchers…thanks are appreciated and we are good.  It was an interesting day with some hiccups, but overall a good first day on the Carnival Imagination.

Day Two—Monday—February 17th—Catalina Island, CA

I slept very well with the smooth seas overnight. We arrived and anchored off of Catalina Island early this morning. I went to the Pride Dining Room about 9:15 for the best breakfast of this trip.  I ordered Danish, Banana & Melons, Avacado Toast with Poached eggs, side of Bacon & Hash browns, and a short stack of Pancakes.  It was great!  We debated wether to go ashore since this is a tender port, but the weather was nice so we did decide to go about 11:30.  Unfortunately there was a delay about the time we were going due to the evacuation of a guest who had passed earlier in the morning.  We made it to Avalon about noon and walked into town and stopped at the Marlin Club.  The entire group stopped by with most of the girls continuing on to shop in the quaint town of Avalon. Myself and some others stayed at the bar.  It was a very interesting group who came in this afternoon…some serious partiers.  We walked back to the water about 2:30 and there was a long long line to return.  We waited 75 minutes to get on a tender, but it was a beautiful day.  It was a fun day, but I may question debarking here in the future although we could have left earlier and returned earlier and avoided some wait times.  I had a very nice Guy’s double cheeseburger about 5:00 pm that will be my dinner for the day.  We had invitations to the Diamond Guest party at 6:30 pm. in the Shangri La Lounge on the Imagination Promenade. There were only about 20 guests in the room and 18 were in our group or friends so it was friendly group for sure. They normally only get 3-4 Diamonds a cruise on average on this smaller ship, but they had plenty of servers for the hors d'oeuvres and bar servers for cocktails for us.  We had a group photo taken with the Captain before the officers left.  DW went to the MDR with most the group, but I had four extra coconut shrimp at the party so I retired to the cabin to watch a movie and work on the review.  It was a very interesting day in Avalon and on the Carnival Imagination.

Day Three—Tuesday—February 18th—Encenada, Mexico

Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well. I enjoyed yesterdays breakfast so much I again went up to the Pride Dining room for breakfast about 9:00 am.  I ordered all the same plus Tomato Juice and Corned Beef Hash (fried) and since that was a feature of a Breakfast Bowl I had another poached egg.  Only thing was the bread was tough under the Avacado Toast, I’ll try to request it on regular white bread in future.  It was a lot to eat but need the protein with todays plans.  At noon nine of our group met in Lobby and we took a shuttle into downtown Encenada.  We walked the two blocks to Hussong’s and had our choice of tables.  We sat up a nine top in the center.  By 1:00 pm we all had our first drinks.  It was 2-for-1 beer so I had two Bohenia (clara) Cervesas to begin.  By 2:00 pm it was full of locals (Siesta time?). Soon with the refills and a large bag of peanuts the party really began.  The thing about Hussong’s is that it is genuine and very eclectic…you never know what your going to get.  We had groups of businessmen, rugby team, girls day out groups, a few tourists, bikers, and more. Entertainment included strolling mariachis, flower vendors, shoe shine boys, caricature artists, and the feature in most opinions: a rodeo roper.  The Roper was very surprisingly great and I’ve seen my share in Texas.  We had set an escape time of 4:00 pm, but blew past that and returned by taxi about 5:00 pm.  Probably good as we avoided lines before the 5:30 back on board time.  More than enough to drink and entertainment already today so I retired to the cabin to hold down the bed.  Room service a great option. It was a good day at Hussong’s and on the Carnival Imagination.

Day Four—Wednesday—February 19th—Fun Day at Sea

Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well.  I was up about 7:30 am and checked accounts and paid some bills.  Today is Seafood Brunch day on the Imagination so both of us went to the Pride MDR for brunch.  We had a bunch of friends set next to us or with us so fun. We used our Diamond drink vouchers on Bloody Marys.  DW ordered the French Toast and it was the size of a 1/3 loaf of bread…tasted great too.  I ordered the Steak & Eggs with side of Bacon and Hash Browns.  All good.  I had the Banana Creme Pie for a dessert.  About 11:30 am they evacuated a guest by Coast Guard medical evac helicopter, unusual on a four day cruise you would have two major medical emergencies.  We watched a movie on the cabin TV then went up to Lido deck and sat of the aft watching the wake.  I had a nice Guy’s Burger & Fries and DW had Guy’s French Fries with Ranch Dressing.  Good.  We then each enjoyed a Mudslide for dessert.  Stopped by the Lobby Bar for a refresher as well.  We met the group for apéritifs before dinner at the Alchemy Bar for farewells.  We ate in the Lido, I had promised the Captain that I would try the pizza so I intended dinner to be Salad and Pizza tonight.  It was OK, but not near the pizza on MSC ships.  I did also sample the Leg of Lamb from the carving station and the Chicken Parmesan…both good and they had more selections than I anticipated, but Royal Caribbean is king of the Evening dinner Lido buffets.  We retired to the cabin to finish packing and set out our large bags for pick up by 11:00.  It was a nice relaxing sea day on the Carnival Imagination.

Debarkation—Thursday—February 20th—Long Beach, California
Smooth seas overnight and we were sitting just off the pier by 3:00 am.  and docking about 6:00 am.  We stayed in the cabin until 8:35 then took the Diamond Shortcut off the ship to the terminal where we picked up our checked bags and cleared U.S. Border Control.  A very easy process.  We were on the Carnival Airport shuttle by 9:00 am. Airport was a smooth process too.  We enjoyed a nice lunch and then our flight was at 2:30pm landing at 7:15 pm local time at DFW.  A two hour drive home to the ranch by 10:00 pm.  A very easy travel day.

Cabin
We had cabin E7 an interior porthole cabin located on Empress deck 7 far forward on starboard side. The same cabin I had on my previous cruise on this ship.  The cabin is a standard Porthole/OV space, with twin or queen bed. It has a swipe type safe, three-section closet, one chair, one electrical outlet, Telephone on desk, Small Stool at dresser/desk, Hair dryer, and small flat screen TV with the interactive features.  There is no refrigerator. My cabin steward, Lu, was very good, the cabin was always clean and ice container filled.

Dining / Food / Bars
Upgraded two years ago to Carnival’s now standard 2.0 upgrade she has all the dining and bar options one would expect on Carnival: Guy’s Burgers, Blue Iguana Cantina, Alchemy Bar, Red Frog Rum Bar, and more.  The Horizon Lido Buffet is much improved as well.  I found the food adequate and really like the 2.0 additions.  We didn’t eat in the MDR for dinner.  The Guy's Burgers were cooked properly...when they are they are the best at sea.

Crew / Other
Crew were friendly, helpful, and efficient. The Carnival Hub iPhone App is wonderful, especially for checking your account balances.  I found the internet Wi-Fi worked very well.
