This short  four day cruise is the fifth of five consecutive cruises for me.  This is my 69th Carnival cruise, my first cruise on the Carnival Imagination, and 127th cruise overall.  I am cruising as a solo with a group of friends (Snoozemates).  The Imagination, an older Fantasy class ship, recently received the 2.0 upgrades and other extensive changes in a late 2016 major drydock.

Sunday / Embarkation / March 5th / Day 1

The new Horizon Court Buffet

I left the Norwegian Jewel my cruise home for 14 days about 10:30 am very near the last guests to leave the ship.  Two friends (the very last to leave) and I took a taxi ($30) from San Pedro Cruise Terminal to the Long Beach Cruise Terminal…less than a 15 minute trip.  We dropped our bags with the porters and proceeded to the VIFP check in and immediately saw our friends completing their B2B arrangement so our timing was perfect.  They had warned us that check in was behind at Long Beach certainly one of my least favorite ports to check in since you actually wait outdoors.  We finally boarded again meeting our friends doing the B2B at the lobby bar.  Everyone was in a good mood especially after a cocktail or two.  We ate at the newly remodeled Horizon Bar & Grill located aft on Lido deck.  I had a Grilled Rubin sandwich and a Tuna on white sandwich, thus the two plates in the surprise photo.  After lunch I went to the cabin and both of my bags had arrived (that was efficient) so I did my cabin set up.  Much smaller cabin area this cruise from last.  I attended Safety Boat Drill, my Muster area was A and met in the theater. We were sailing about 6:00 and heading south I assume looking for warmer weather for tomorrows sea day.  About 7:00 pm the group met at the Alchemy Bar, it was very busy.  The bar is located in the old cigar bar location…very different.  We have 8:15 dinner in the Spirit Dining room located aft. The Maitre’D arranged a nice 11- top table for our group and even offered complementary Sparking wine for the table.  They have never had nine Diamonds in one group or table before tonight. Thank you Ian.  The traditional Welcome Show was at 10:00 pm in the Dynasty Main Lounge.  It was a good day for seeing friends on the Carnival Inspiration.

Monday / Fun Day at Sea / March 6th / Day 2

Smooth seas overnight and I was up early. I have the Green Eggs & Ham breakfast scheduled for 8:45 but at 7:40 I went to the Blue Iguana for a Huevo Ranchero…just in case…it was good.  At 8:45 I met friends for the Green Eggs & Ham theme breakfast.  At first the kids were rowdy, but soon they were preoccupied with all the colors and decorations.  We were visited by Thing 1 and Thing 2, then Sam I Am, then the Cat in the Hat…they are of course accompanied by a ship photographer ($).  I actually had the Steak and Eggs breakfast similar to what you would receive on the Sea Day Brunch. A friend actually ordered the Green Eggs & Ham…someone had too.  It was interesting and I now know what happens at this event.  I did the Parade and Book Reading on previous Breeze cruise so I now have the full Carnival Dr. Seuss experience. Rather cool out on deck today so found the gang in Lobby Bar, it’s actually my favorite bar on a Fantasy class ship and a great place to people watch.  Very interesting passengers on this sailing with 80% Blue and Red cards. I bet the average age dropped by 50 years from my last two weeks on the Jewel.  After a ginger ale and visiting it was to the cabin for a nice wee nap.  I went up to Lido for a very good Guy’s Burger about 3:45 then to Cherry of Top for some Swedish Fish.  At 5:00 pm we went to the Piano Bar for the Diamond Party, in addition to the 11 in our group, there were two or three other guests.  They were very generous with the complementary cocktails and the h’orderves were nice.  The Captain and senior officers who attended were very generous with their time.  They continued to serve us until almost 6:15 and we stayed until 7:00 since the entire group was there…it was a great party. I went to the cabin to change for dinner and I say our group looked impressive in our matching black Hawaiian shirts this evening.  Dinner was good, I ordered Broiled Sea Scallops on Risoto, the Baked Stuffed Mushrooms, Minestrone Milanese, Barbecued Spare Ribs, and shared a Blue Crab Ravioli.  Ian and his team again poured Champagne for us.  Very nice meal and the Scallops were a new dish to me, maybe a west coast thing or new menu item.  We were finished in time for the 2nd seating of the first production show: Divas in the Dynasty Lounge.  It was an interesting and very busy first, last, & only sea day on the Carnival Imagination.

Tourist in Avalon

camera from the comfort of my bed while updating this review.  Nice, but I would have been awoken anyway when the ship dropped anchor at 7:10 am outside Avalon Bay as my cabin is far forward.  I went down to the Pride Dining Room for a nice Eggs Benedict breakfast, then to GS to purchase a voucher to LAX, spoke with the Hotel Director for a bit, then a walk about on the upper deck for a photo of Avalon.  The weather is better than I expected so I have decided to tender onto the island after all.  I was on a tender that arrived in Avalon about 11:00 am and began to walk to the main shopping district and saw friends on the way.  It’s a very interesting and pretty town. I visited with friends, looked at some shops, walked out on the pier, and took a photo of our ship.  I took a tender back early to beat the crowds and any long lines and was back on board about 2:30 in plenty of time for a Guy’s Burger.  I was visiting at the lobby bar and ended up entering the paper airplane contest, another first.  The group met about 4:00 pm in the lobby for Mimosas, etc. from all the bottles of champagne accumulated.  During the cocktail hour I used my two VIFP vouchers for cocktails at the lobby bar and enjoyed the entertainment. Roma and Edward the bartenders make a great team.  Another bartender working relief was Sebastian who had been my head waiter twice on previous cruises.  I actually prefer the Lobby bar to the Alchemy on this this ship, a rarity for me.  Dinner tonight was good, I ordered: the Beetroot Carpaccio (2), the Iceberg Wedge Salad, the Sliced Beef Sirloin entree, and shared a Steak Taco entree.  For dessert a wonderful Carrot Cake. During dessert and following we were entertained by the Magician Vlad from Russia.  He did several very entertaining feats of magic for us. It is very nice being at the ‘A’ or Diamond table.  The Love and Marriage Show was the primary entertainment this evening, but I passed and had some cabin time before retiring.  It was a very nice day on Catalina Island and the Carnival Imagination.

Wednesday / Ensenada, Mexico / March 8th / Day 4

a beautiful day.  I went to the MDR for a nice full 3-egg breakfast then met our group for an Carnival excursion at 8:30.  We were off at by 9:00 in our bus for the 45 minute trip to La Bufadora.  The vendors were interesting, but the waterspout was a pretty much a dud today. The Pina Colada and Churos from street vendors were good.  We returned to Encenada and stopped at the The Riviera Cultural Center a former resort hotel casino built 1929/30.  It was a very interesting complex, I enjoyed the vintage photos of former Hollywood stars who visited.  This was final stop of the tour and the bus actually dropped us off in front of Hussong's.  We arrived after 1:00 and most of our friends were already there so it was catch up time. It was packed when we arrived, but gradually cleared.  I  usually have the margaritas and had a few, but drank Bohemia Blanca beer.  I also enjoyed the Mexican food from next door and visited the Gift store down the street.  It was another fun meeting at Hussong's.  I taxied back to the ship and  was back on board by 4:00ish and had time for a Guy’s burger.  I then took a wee nap before meeting the group.  For dinner tonight I ordered the Escargot, Pumpkin Soup (too salty), Italian Wedding Soup, and a NY Strip Steak.  Dessert was Bread Pudding Cake (too dry for me), although overall it was a good dinner.  We were visited again by the Magician, he did some amazing tricks.  It was farewell for the group tonight. Some went to the Production show Epic Rock, some to the casino, and some retired to their cabins.  It was Fun day in Mexico and on the Imagination.

Thursday / Long Beach, CA / March 9th / Debarkation
I woke early as we docked in Long Beach and got the bags out to pack.  First I went to the MDR at

7:00ish for a final breakfast ordering something different: Poached Eggs…they were good. I witnessed a rude guest, he walked in and began taking off his backpack at a series of tables and a waiter called him on it saying he needed to be seated by the hosts.  He got into an argument with waiter  saying we was going to wait for friends and asking the waiter for his name and acting very bossy to him, I actually yelled across two tables and told him that there were no waiters assigned to that series of tables as they are on an isle and would be bumped by bags on this debark morning.  I also called him a ‘jerk face’ … I have no idea where that came from I don’t recall ever using that term before today.  I thought the waiter would nod or something to me since I had his back, but he was flustered by this time.  I was packed by 8:30 pm the time to clear cabins but waited another twenty minutes to roll off…they did allow a little Diamond shortcut since I’m already on the correct deck for debark.  Captain Bruno and HD Guna were near the exit so I got in a final farewell to the two of them. Customs went quickly and I was outside and heading to the shuttle bus to LAX…they left as soon as I boarded.  I was at the airport by 10:00 am…a very smooth process.  It will be good to be home after this 40 day cruise adventure.

Cabin
I had cabin E7 an interior porthole cabin located on Empress deck 7 far forward on starboard side. The cabin is a standard Porthole/OV space, with twin or queen bed. It has a swipe type safe, three-section closet, one chair, one electrical outlet, Telephone on desk, Small Stool at dresser/desk, Hair dryer, and small flat screen TV with the interactive features.  There is no refrigerator. The cabin is great for me as a solo. My cabin steward, Christian, was very good, the cabin was always clean and ice container filled.

Dining / Food / Bars
Recently upgraded to Carnival’s now standard 2.0 upgrade she has all the dining and bar options one would expect on Carnival: Guy’s Burgers, Blue Iguana Cantina, Alchemy Bar, Red Frog Rum Bar, and more.  The Horizon Lido Buffet is much improved as well.  I found the food adequate and really like the 2.0 additions.

Crew / Other
Crew were friendly, helpful, and efficient. The Carnival Hub iPhone App is wonderful, especially for checking your account balances.  I found the internet Wi-Fi worked very well.

This cruise is the beginning of five consecutive cruises for me.  The Bloggers and a later group cruise was booked long ago, I filled in other cruises to save travel.  This will be the review for the B2B on the Carnival Glory with the John Heald Blogger cruise being the second week.  I will chronicle both cruises in this one review.   This is my 66th & 67th Carnival cruises, my 5th/6th time on the Carnival Glory, and 123rd/124th cruises overall.  I am cruising as a solo.

Friday / Travel / January 27, 2017 / Day 0

Miami Beach from flight

Originally I was flying to Miami on Saturday, but American Airlines cancelled the early flight from Waco, so there was no way to get to Miami from Waco before sailing.  I now have to fly the day before…more expensive due to hotel cost…but a much easier travel day.  I didn’t want to leave the new truck at the airport for 41 days so DW dropped me at Waco Regional about 9:15 am.  Check in and security is easy at the small airport and soon our 40 minute flight was at DFW airport for the scheduled 12:30 flight to Miami.  Sometime that morning our plane went from a 767 to a 757 so new boarding vouchers and seat assignments for all…I had time and actually noticed that my boarding didn’t match the AA iPhone App so got mine strait away, no middle seat thank goodness.  We were a little late but arrived in Miami about 4:20 pm.  A zone taxi ($20) downtown and I arrived at The Langford just about 5:15.  I love the Langford, we stayed there just after they opened before our trip to Cuba.  A bit more expensive now as it’s more in line with Miami rates, but includes continental breakfast and as a returning guest they gave me two complimentary cocktail vouchers.  I went up to the Pawnbroker, the Penthouse rooftop bar where it was ‘happy hour’ and it's rather busy for an early hour.  Beautiful views of sunset over downtown Miami and this has become one of the ‘hot’ bars in Miami.  I ordered and enjoyed two of their signature cocktails until hunger overcame me.  About 7:00 pm I went across the street to the Downtown French Bistro that is rated well in guides.  It was not busy and I had a choice table.  It was happy hour on wine and beer so I ordered a Hefeweizen beer.  The menu is primarily French as is the decor.  I ordered the Petit Velouté de Potiron a small and sweet Butternut Squash Shooter as a starter and the Coquilles St. Jacques grillés sur Risotto avec Portobello & Huile de Truffes - Seared Scallops over Risotto with Portobello Mushrooms & Truffle Oil.  It was outstanding…scallops large and fried perfectly and the risotto was delicious.  It was also served with a small Arugula salad.  A wonderful meal.  After dinner I enjoyed some TV and the super fast internet (to me) then really ended up turning in early this evening.  It was a very easy and enjoyable travel day.

Saturday / Embarkation / January 28th / Day 1

Glory Sail Away from Miami 1/28

So nice to be already in Miami.  I slept very well and about 9:00 am went for the Continental breakfast included with the hotel fare.  Then I walked the two blocks to Walgreens for diet Coke and toiletries (liquids) I didn’t want to take on the plane.  I’m not going to rush to the port, i’ll let the anxious guests clog up the early boarding and I will enjoy some internet time at the hotel.  I checked out and got a Taxi ($18) to the port arriving about 11:35 am.  I thought they would have taken care of the super early Priority guests, but it was a huge mess…all backed up. Really no organization at all.  Priority guests really didn’t have any advantage over general boarding.  In fact when I finally boarded they were boarding zone three and blue cards.  They just were not processing the VIFP’s fast enough.  Once on board it went better: my cabin was ready, I met my cabin Steward Richard, and soon I was up at Lido deck enjoying a nice lunch of Salad Greens and Chicken Tenders.  It was already time for the 2:00 pm Facebook meet up so I just walked out to the Azure Bar for that meet up.  I saw a lot of cruise friends and enjoyed a couple of Pilsner Urquell’s. From Lido I sent a gag photo to Carnival Comedian Lance M that I screwed up and will now be one of my humorous cruise stories…you’ll have to ask me when you see me.  I went to safety drill about 4:00 pm and it went smoothly although I requested to sit and not actually go outside on the open deck.  Yes I took the easy way.  I returned to the cabin and Richard had placed my checked bag inside so I finished unpacking, hung clothes, and set up of the cabin.  I use hook magnets, various converter plugs, fan, and more in cabin set up.  I went to the Alchemy Bar for cocktails before dinner and met Ivana and Miro the Alchemists. They fixed me up with my traditional Quick Fix. John Heald actually popped in to say hello as well.  Hey John.  Dinner was at 8:00 and I was a little late as I assumed it was at 8:15…woops.  I knew most at my table so that will be nice for the week.  Dinner was good, I ordered:  Creme of Tomato Soup, Sweet & Sour Shrimp, and from the port menu the Fried Chicken and Tomato BLT.  After dinner I stopped by the Alchemy Bar for a Deal Closer as a nightcap.  It was an interesting and Fun first day on the Carnival Glory. 

Sunday / Fun Day at Sea / January 29th / Day 2

Platinum MDR

Just a little rocking in the seas overnight and I slept very well.  I must announce a new 'CruiseHack'--I brought a battery powered motion controlled light for the bathroom.  The kind you normally use to light toilet bowls...although I placed it on the shelves next to the large mirror.  When I went to the toilet in the night I was greeted with a very nice blue ambient light.  No need to find the light switch (which is outside in cabin) and just a  perfect amount of light.  It will be in my cruise kit along with my fan, magnets, electrical plugs, etc. from now on.  We did hit rainy weather this morning as we are off the northern coast of Cuba.  I had a light breakfast outside on lido aft and watched the rain.  Cabin time to update this blog then a walkabout the ship before lunch.  The Diamond event was a 12:15 Brunch in the Golden Restaurant located midship.  We ordered from the regular sea day brunch menu but I took advantage of the complementary cocktails.  I ordered a fruit plate, the Tomato Soup, and the 'Hey' Pork Chop.  For dessert a very nice Banana Creme Pie.  I did meet the Captain and several senior officers I had not met, and the GSM Vincent Whinset sat at my table so it was interesting getting some observations from him.  The goal for today was to have a nice brunch, cocktails, and a nice nap…I can say it was a very successful day…I slept until 7:10 pm.  I dressed for dinner and made the 8:00 pm seating on time.  Tonight I ordered the Italian Wedding Soup, the Spaghetti Carbonara as a starter, and the Slow Cooked Prime Rib entree. For dessert I had the Vanilla Crème Brûlée and a Fruit Plate.  The primary entertainment tonight is the production show Epic Rock in the Amber Palace Theater and I made time for a Spicy Chipolte Pineapple Martini from the Alchemy Bar before retiring.  The Platinum/Diamond gifts were delivered tonight...a nice boxed nightlight...won't work in bathroom as my new motion light does though.  No chocolates delivered and that may be a new policy...I'm actually fine with it...I didn't really eat more than one or two and delivery would have interrupted my great record-setting power nap.   It was a very relaxing sea day on the Carnival Glory.

Monday / Grand Cayman-Sea Day / January 30th / Day 3

Some rolling seas over night and another very nice sleep.  I had room service scheduled and delivered at 7:30 a.m. as the plan was to meet friends early and tender ashore to a private pool off Seven-Mile Beach.  Weather is beautiful, but the seas are not cooperating so Georgetown port was closed.  We sailed around to Spot’s Bay to attempt to anchor but that was a no go as well so we will have a sea day today.  The weather is lovely about 80° so it will be nice on the outer decks…a nice change from yesterdays heavy clouds. I sat out on Lido aft enjoying the sea air when I heard an announcement from John Heald, kind of rare since he not the CD, about a Q&A that he was about to do in the Amber Palace.  A nice fill-in on the unscheduled sea day as it’s actually a one hour comedy routine that John does so well.  I went and most that showed up were JH fans on board for the next sailing…and it was very entertaining.  The MDR opened for lunch since and it was not busy at all since it’s not on the original schedule…I confirmed it on the HUB App.  What a great benefit the HUB is especially when new events, entertainment, and opening times are added due to changes. For lunch I had the Penne Mediterraneo and a fabulous Breaded Chicken Cutlet with Passion Fruit Mousse for dessert.  I had a walkabout the ship and ended up sampling some Cheesecake and Pear Mousse as they closed the dessert station on Lido then sat out on Lido aft.  It began clouding up about 4:00 and they closed the retractable roof, I hope we aren’t sailing towards bad weather tomorrow.  There were Chocolate Covered Strawberries once I returned to the cabin, if they had come earlier I would not have accidentally ended up at the dessert bar earlier. Right.  I went to the Alchemy Bar for aperitifs about 6:30 and Ivanna prepared a special cocktail for me with Elderflower…similar to a Jana 88…it was nice.  For dinner I ordered two Shrimp Cocktails, Leek & Potato Soup, a Pork Chop from the Grill section, and the Oven Roasted Chicken marinated in island spices (very spicy) from the Grand Cayman port menu.  No dessert.  The production show tonight in the Amber Palace theater was Getaway Island, one of my favorites.  Late this evening a very nice Fruit, Wine, & Cheese basket was delivered to the cabin, I’m not sure who it is from, but thank you Carnival, I do like an occasional snack and I like he fruit much better than chocolate.  It was an interesting sea day on the Glory.

Tuesday  /  Roatan-Bay Islands-Honduras  /  January 31st / Day 4

Red Beet Carpaccio

Just slightly rolling seas overnight.  I noticed that it was wet outside early in the morning so had a banana from my fruit basket and into bed to sleep as late as possible. The ship does crew safety drills usually about 10:00am on some port days so no sleep if they do it.  I got around and went up to Lido for some pastries before they close breakfast then sat outside on the covered pool deck aft.  At least we are docked and the majority of guests seem to have gone ashore.  A bit surprising to me.  I did hit the hot tub for a while and just relaxed on deck.  By noon it was really pouring rain and it got busier on the deck.  I went up to deck ten to Ol' Fashion BBQ for lunch.  Its a great spot where the Fish & Chips used to be located, but since they now have an updated SeaFood Shack on Lido no need for duplication.  The BBQ was good, very similar to the C-Side BBQ found on the outer decks of Dream Class ships.  I had hoped it would clear enough to walk over and drink a few Salva Vida beers with friends and I’m sure some did, but easier and dryer to stay on board this afternoon.  I had a wee nap, TV and internet time, and updated this review. Since BBQ was my breakfast (I'm sayin') about 5:00 I went for my first Guy's Burger of the cruise...great as usual.  I visited with a guest while on Lido on her first cruise...a single Mom with 4-year old son. I think she may have needed some adult conversation and good for her for choosing a cruise for her vacation, very ambitious IMHO, I wouldn't do it.  No rain but cloudy and damp for sail away from the island.  I went to the Alchemy Bar for my traditional Aperitifs about 7:00 pm choosing my special cocktail from Ivana.  Dinner tonight included one of mt favorite Carnival dishes: the Red Beet Carpaccio so I ordered several of those as well as Heart of IceBerg Lettuce, an excellent Grilled Beef Tenderloin, and the Pescado Asado Cubierto Con Tostones from the Port-of Call menu.  Primary entertainment tonight was the Love and Marriage Show with Cruise Director Eric and the Piano Bar was busy tonight.

Wednesday / Belize City Belize / February 1st / Day 5

Alchemy Team

Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well.  We were tendered off Belize early  this morning and fortunately the weather is partly cloudy but fairly nice considering the forecast as of late last night was for heavy rain.  They proceeded as fast as possible to get guests tendered ashore while it is fair weather.  I had a lazy morning on the internet and doing a little work online.  An orange from the fruit basket is all I needed after a large wonderful meal last night.  I went up on aft deck and there is certainly more sun now and weather improved through the day...we are lucky.  I had a swim in the pool, very refreshing, and some time in the hot tub.  I got a table next to friends very aft with a great view and spent the afternoon.  BBQ from Ol' Fashion BBQ again for lunch...more crew than guests today.  I enjoyed the view and colors of the Caribbean Sea while reading and enjoying my Yeti filled with an ArnoldPalmer tea. I was going to vist with some friend on early sitting dinner so went down to the Alchemy about 5:15ish and missed them, but why waste a trip, I enjoy a nice cocktail or three.  Miro also made me a proper Sazerac that I had not had since staying at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans.  Very impressed. I had a longer cocktail hour until dinner time but it’s the Alchemy Bar…very doable.  Tonight I ordered: Roasted Pumpkin Soup, Beef Lasagna (as starter), Braised Short Ribs, and the Buttered Popcorn Pot de Creme for dessert.  Very good.  After visiting with a Scottish couple at the bar and Griz at dinner I set up my speakers in the cabin and listened to some Celtic music this evening.  Another Fun day on the Carnival Glory.

Smooth seas overnight and perfect weather…sunny but not too hot.  We docked early at the Puerto Maya Pier so I decided to have a banana from the fruit basket and get off the ship as soon as possible to beat the crowds.  It can be a mess at the Mexican inspection table and at the taxi stand.  I got off in very good shape and there were few guests on the pier.  I was probably a bit rude going around some at the inspections, but they were clueless, I had my backpack off and in my left hand for the fruit inspection and passed right through.  I think I was forgiven once the guests figured out what was going on and they did indeed have to remove their packs.  (I had given them fair warning, but when I saw the lady with the rolling cooler I knew she was going to gum up the system so I went around about three).  No line at all at taxi stand so I had my private ride to San Miguel ($8) and there by 8:30 am.  I had a very nice breakfast and great table at Las Palmas.  It was cool watching the Carnival Conquest sail by on the way to the pier while eating.  Breakfast was good: Pan Dulce, Island omelet (eggs, pineapple, ham), Bacon, Sausage, French Toast, and Leche Caliente ($10.80).  Barber shop doesn’t open until 10:00 am so I had time to go by the Church to reflect.  DW does this every cruise and I try as well.  Martin arrived and I had my haircut from my barber of 10 years.  It was now time to head to my HQ in Cozumel:  Woody’s Bar and Grill.  I had just set up my computer to enjoy the fastest internet on the island when friends arrived, then more friends.  Always fun and live music began at noon.  I always start with a Coca-Cola Light (two today), then move on to Bohemia beer and Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, & Chips.  I lost count on the beers, at least 4-5, and my total bill was $400 pesos or $20.  After friends left I did a lot of internet work…just love the speed…it’s faster than the Ranch.  Took a taxi back to Puerto Maya ($8) and the Freedom and Conquest were docked since I left this morning.  Some lines to board, but I was on ship by 4:15 for a 4:30 requested on board time. We sailed about 5:00 and I decided to do what I have done last few Cozumel nights on cruises: absolutely nothing.  No Alchemy, no MDR dinner, no shows--just relax.  I prepared some laundry, took a long hot shower, and ordered room service: Green Salad, Vegetable Plate, & Chicken Tenders ($5).  A very relaxing evening.  It was a Fun Cozumel Day.

Friday / Fun Say at Sea / February 3rd / Day 7

Fun at Alchemy

Fair seas overnight and I had a nice sleep. I went down to the MDR for the final sea day brunch about 9:00 am and was seated strait away.  I ordered the Fruit Plate and three Fried Eggs with side of bacon and ham…very good.  I enjoyed the sea air on Lido deck aft all morning until I had a late lunch of Guy’s Burgers. Yes plural…one just plain meat and bread, other with lettuce tomato onion…different tastes.  Then a trip to Cherry on Top for some candy and people watching on Promenade deck until time for the 5:00 pm Diamond and Platinum party.  It’s nice to be nice to the cocktail servers…I had no problem getting more than my share of Cosmopolitans.  Nice party, Gus was high with most days and I was 7th, but my table had 4 of the top ten. I doubt I make the top ten next cruise with Bloggers week. I had saved my complementary drink voucher until the last day to use at the Alchemy Bar and Miro had concocted a special cocktail for me…it was fruity and my with my favorite Elderflower…delicious.  Wonderful farewell party with my new and old Alchemy friends.  Feeling no pain I skipped dinner in the MDR for cabin time. Al Ernst and Tony Esposito are two of the best comedians now on board and for Bloggers following.  The production Show was Motor City.  I passed on late shows to relax...I have a lot of sailing before this current adventure ends.  It was a great final Sea Day on the Carnival Glory.

Saturday / Miami / February 4th / Beginning Bloggers Cruise / Day 8

Smooth seas overnight and I slept very well even through the early morning debarkation announcements.  Fortunately I’m in the same cabin for both cruises so it will be an easy transition.  Another MDR breakfast about 8:30 am same order but not as good as yesterdays…maybe because of debark?  The over-easy was hard fried. The large B2B group met at 10:00 am and we eventually made our trip down to US Customs and returned to the ship for a complementary cocktail and photo.  It was great seeing early Blogger guests arrive most I have seen & known for years.  We have a mini-Snoozemate group so close friends this week.  I went up to Lido for a light lunch then to the cabin to set up my internet plan for the week & update this blog.  I met my new cabin Steward for the week, I can for see problems as he asked if I wanted morning or evening service…I indicated both.  I have good friends sailing this week so I went up on deck and found them by the main pool at Blue Iguana.  Just a diet coke for me and some people watching.  The pool was already packed with guests as the weather is very nice.  Boat Drill was about 3:45 and I did the same just going to a sit down lounge…they really have NO way of determining if someone attends or not.  At 5:00 pm the first Bloggers function was a welcome party in the Amber Palace Main Lounge.  John introduced the comedians and some staff, very funny as usual and I enjoyed a few Stella Artois beers. I went to the Alchemy Bar for aperitifs, and met the new Alchemist Richard, I will miss Ivana. I enjoyed my new cocktail with friends until time for dinner that has been changed from 8:00 to 8:15.  I ordered the Creme of Tomato Soup, a Green Garden Salad, and both the Shrimp and Beef entrees with a Fruit Plate for dessert.  Tony and Al did late comedy shows and Eric’s Welcome Show was the primary event this evening.  It was an interesting transition day on the Glory.

Sunday / Fun day at Sea / February 5th / Day 9

Fair seas overnight and I slept well.  Beautiful weather again today.  Cabin steward did not do a turn down last night and did not leave the Fun Times…I knew it…we’ll see if it improves.  I went up to Lido for a very light breakfast eating on open deck aft and visited with new B2B friends. I watched friends in the slot tournaments then to the Golden Restaurant for the Diamond Guest Luncheon at 12:15.  I was very pleased to see the premium menu this week:  I enjoyed the Blue Crab Salad with Citrus, Mushroom Cappuccino Soup, and the Charbroiled Filet Mignon entree.  Excellent dinner and the cocktails were very nice as well.  It was a FUN luncheon.  I visited with friends in the lobby as the Bloggers Tea was going to begin in the same MDR in only half an hour.  The tea time was good...they set up a large buffet and had some tray service.  I had scones and clotted creme that were excellent.  It was now time to relax and await Super Bowl kickoff.  On lido deck the Blue Iguana, Guy's Burgers, and Red Frog Rum Bar are staying open until midnight for those watching on the big outdoor screen.  In the Amber Palace Theater they are serving Chicken wings and have bar service.  The Sports Bar and Casino on Promenade Deck also have the game.  I watched 1st half on Lido and had a late night guy's Burger...very different.  Then retired to the cabin for second half and very exciting ending.  It was a FUN Super Bowl Sea Day Sunday on the Carnival Glory.

Monday / Amber Cove, Dominican Republic  / February 6th / Day 10

Teleférico Cable Car - Longest/highest in Caribbean

Seas were fair overnight and I slept well however short due to Game and early excursion this morning.  I ordered a light room service breakfast as a wake up, but was up by 6:00 am. so reviewed my excursion and email until breakfast arrived. Soon I went out on deck to get a feel for our arrival at Amber Cove…this is actually a new port for me. This area of the Dominican Republic is where Columbus first landed in the new world and established a colony.  I was headed for deck zero about 8:00 am as I have a bit of a walk to the meeting location of my private excursion.  A good 12-15 minute walk: down the pier, through Amber Cove, past the parking, then through the gate to the excursion meet location…hope it’s worth it.  Soon the bus arrived as well as the other guests on the tour and we were on our way.  We drove  from Amber Cove the short way to the city of Puerto Plata driving down the Malecon and by the public beach of Puerto Plata. First stop was the Brugal Rum Factory, a nice modern facility.  After reviewing the history of the brand and drinking some samples, we could observe the production floor.  It was interesting.  Second stop is the Amber Museum, where we see many displays and of course Amber for sale on the way out.  We then walked to the Central Park (Town Square) where we visited the beautiful old Victorian era Church (earlier ones where destroyed), and the lovey square decorated for the Merengue Festival of Puerto Plata.  I did have photos taken with Festivale characters.  We visited a shoppe where they hand rolled cigars and gave us a sample of the local drink: Mamajuana…of course they sold souvenirs.  Next stop was the old original 16th century Fort San Filipe where we had a history presentation and we could observe the nicely restored fort.  Final stop is the Teleférico where we travel by Cable Car to the 793-meter-high mountain Pico Isabel de Torres, the highest point of Puerto Plata where there is a replica of Christ the Redeemer, the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro. Guides are there to help take photos but they want you to then visit their 'table' or shoppe.  So the common thread on today's tour is that there are nice places to visit, but they WILL try to sell you something at each stop.  Was it worth it...yes once for sure, my cost was $40 including the cable car ($10), and the small bus was adequate.  We were back at the ship about 3:00 for the 4:00 sail away.  My first stop was Guy's Burgers...what an asset to have a Guy's that can feed guests quickly...especially when just return to the ship.  I went to the Alchemy Bar early and they were very busy it being Elegant Night.  I had my two SugarRays and a new Pear cocktail.  Great job Miro.  My regular cruise friends, blogger friends, and new friends all came by before dinner.  Tonight I ordered:  Mushroom Creme Soup, Spaghetti Carbonara (as a starter), Broiled Maine Lobster Tail, and the Slow Roasted Prime Rib.  For dessert: Vanilla Crème Brûlée and a Fruit Plate.  The production show tonight was Motor City, and of course Piano Bar music with Ben Gentry (one of the best), and the Punchliner comedians...so a busy night for guests.  It was a busy day in DR and the Glory.

Tuesday / St. Thomas USVI / February 7th / Day 11

Honeymoon Beach - St John USVI

Fair seas overnight and I slept very well.  I was awake early so I went down to the MDR for a nice full breakfast about 8:00 am.  About 9:30 I was on the Lido Deck aft and met friends for (their) breakfast and Bloody Marys.  It was then that the Captain announced that we would be late arriving in St. Thomas.  We were scheduled for 11:00 am but announced that it will be 12:15 pm.  We had a noon meet time for our excursion on the pier but that was changed to the Amber Palace…a lot of confusion but all was well as we arrived in St. Thomas.  The huge NCL Escape is also in port and it’s a nice sunny day as our excursion ultimately met on the pier and we were soon off towards Red Hook. All of our mini Snoozemates group and other good friends are all on the  St. John Catamaran Sail & Snorkel With Open Bar excursion. We had a nice manageable group and were soon sailing the beautiful waters to St John island.  We anchored off Honeymoon Beach in the National Park area and most snorkeled to shore and enjoyed some beach time.  Some rode the dingy from the Cat to beach.  I hit the water and snorkeled although there wasn’t that much to see so enjoyed the sand of the beach and water.  I snorkeled back to the ship as well so good exercise today.  When everyone arrived back on board the bar was opened and they also served fruit & cheese snacks as we sailed back to St Thomas.  When we were completely under sail you could really feel the higher waves in the open sea area so knew why the Glory took longer to arrive in port this morning.  Really glad that our beach was protected from the high waves.  We were taxied back to Havensight and the ship with a little time for shopping or beer before our 6:30 back on board time.  It really gets dark by 5:30 pm now but it’s a beautiful port in the evening hours.  I was too tired to dress and go to the MDR so I had Dinner in the Lido Marketplace and it was good, I sampled the Linguini Pasta Dish, had two BBQ Pork Ribs, two Baked Potatoes, and from the carving station the Grilled Beef Tenderloin.  I asked and received a nice thick cut…it was wonderful. The feature entertainment in the theater was John Heald’s infamous Marriage Show.    The Glory might as well take advantage of him being on board with the Bloggers Group.  After dinner and sail away I did some review updates and retired after TV time.  It was a busy, beautiful, and Fun day today in St Thomas USVI.

Wednesday / San Juan / February 8th / Day 12

Luis - Patio Bar - El Convento - OSJ

Again smooth seas overnight and I slept very well although I was up very early.  I did some updating (too tired last night) and work until just after 7:00 am when I noticed that the MDR opened very early this morning.  I went down for a nice Eggs Benedict breakfast, first of the cruise, and it was once my go to breakfast.  Then it was up to enjoy the wonderful weather up on lido aft where I visited with friends until 11:30 am.  I then changed and went to meet friends and share a taxi to see my favorite cocktail server in San Juan.  Soon we were at the El Convento hotel's Patio Bar enjoying cocktails.  Luis prepared a Smoky Cherry Ginger Mojito that was extra special.  I had to have another just to assure quality.  We walked back to the ship as it's all downhill stopping at the new Walgreen's Drugs then a couple of Madalla Light beers before boarding at 3:00 pm the designated time.  No line at all.  I went straight to Guy's for a double hamburger and it was great.  Cabin time until I went to the Alchemy Bar about 7:00 pm and enjoyed a special cocktail from Miro.  The Alchemy Bar has been packed each night this week, much busier than the previous week...as I told the bartenders it would be.  The Blogger guests do tend to enjoy themselves.  Dinner was nice, tonight I ordered: Roasted Pumpkin Soup, the Escargot, a Green Salad, the Braised Short Ribs entree, and the Buttered Popcorn Pot de Creme for dessert. The primary production show was Getaway Island in the Amber Palace and John Heald hosted his Cigars Under the Stars late night event on Serenity Deck.  We also have new Comedians on board for the rest of the cruise as well as Piano Bar and all the other venues busy.  It was an interesting day in Puerto Rico and on the Carnival Glory.

Thursday / Grand Turk / February 9th / Day 14

Rolling seas as we left Puerto Rico that continued through the night…I enjoy them as it rocks you to sleep. I’ve watched the sunrise the past two morning…very pretty especially with the huge thundercloud cells this morning. The MDR opens later this morning as we have a late arrival so I went up to Lido aft to visit with 'the gang' for awhile, but ended up in the MDR about 9:15 am.  Another Eggs Benedict breakfast.  I watched us sail into Grand Turk and dock about 11:00 am, the Carnival Sunshine is already docked.  Great beach port as the water is so beautiful here (Main photo at top).  At this port I prefer to get off late and return late and if you can catch a sunset on the walk on the beach returning even better.  I left the ship about 1:00 pm and headed up the beach to Jack's Shack the destination for my cruising friends for many years...now it's the destination for a LOT of people.  Over the years it has evolved from a shanty bar to a destination bar.  The water and perfect beach are an attraction for sure...as is Topher the Jack's Shack famous beach combing dog.  The Snoozemate's had a group photo taken with Topher when he was a puppy...and now a very happy mature dog that I have enjoyed watching over the years.  Some early arrival friends had a table so I was good once I arrived to enjoyed a full afternoon of wonderful Caribbean water and Turks Head beer  (BTW-prices have doubled over the years).  A great beach day.  We returned to the ship about 5:00ish and I always feel sorry for the room stewards at this port as there must be so much sand they have to clean up in the cabins.  We sailed away about 6:00 and it was just enough daylight / sunset to enjoy it. After clean up from the sand I was in too much of a beach mood to do elegant night dinner tonight so I had a great Fish & Chips meal ($6) at the SeaFood Shack on Lido Deck.  Two large fresh fish fillets fried perfectly served with tartar sauce, slaw and fries.  Very good...just like you'd get from a fish shop on the coast of Scotland (just fancier).  Very relaxing evening doing nothing.  It was a great beach day in Grand Turk.

Friday / Fun Day at Sea / February 10th

Sea food Shack -  Lobster Rolls

Slightly rocky seas overnight and I slept long and well as we begin our final sea day of the cruise.  I went up to Lido Marketplace before 8:00 am and since no line at omelet station I got my very first omelet of the cruise...a Western and it was very good especially with the side of bacon and toast.  I ate outside and it will be a nice sun shining day.  I went to pick up my Bloggers T-shirt and had a walk about on the ship, I had not made it to any of the upper forward decks including the two level Serenity Deck for adults only. I visited with friends on the Promenade deck then took some cash off my sail account at Guest Services.  I still have some OBC I need to spend so I had lunch at the SeaFood Shack. I had Lobster Rolls ($12) and they were great although I think I prefer the fish & chips I had previously.  This afternoon I did some prep for debarkation the attended the Diamond/Platinum party at 5:00 pm.  I had a few cocktails but paced myself well even trying some lighter cocktails.  Then it was the Alchemy Bar for my final visit.  I left in the early evening, but left it in the good hands of many members of the Carnival Alchemy Fan page on Facebook.  Skipped dinner in the MDR and had packing time in the cabin.  Got most done and will finish later.  I did order two BLT's from room service...they were very good...almost let the cruise end without a great BLT.  It was a busy final sea day on the Carnival Glory.

Saturday / Debarkation / Miami / February 11th
I woke early and finished packing.  Then to MDR for an Eggs Benedict breakfast.  My goal is to be among the last off the ship since I'm just walking to the next pier to board the Vista. I ended up leaving about 9:00ish as they were begging for self assist to leave.  Those left with tags had to wait for the luggage carousals to get to their numbers.  There was no problem getting an elevator or any lines...just walked off a bit after 9:00 am.  Good bye Carnival Glory.

Cabin
I had cabin 8407 a 4G interior located on deck 8 aft on starboard side for both cruises (Yea).  A nice location just down from Lido deck at aft stairways.  The cabin is a standard interior space, with twin or queen bed. It has a swipe type safe, three-section closet, no chairs, one electrical outlet on counter/dresser, Telephone on desk, Small Stool at Dresser, Hair dryer in counter/dresser, and small flat screen TV with the interactive features.  There is an empty refrigerator. The cabin is great for me as a solo. Cabin steward Richard was very good, Bogus improved and the cabin was always clean and ice container filled.

Dining / Food / Bars / Entertainment
Both the Golden and Platinum Main Dining Rooms are very nice.  Set dining was in the Platinum Dining room located aft on deck three.  The Blue Iguana for burritos and Guy’s Burgers are excellent.  The buffet food is pretty standard fare, but selected entrees are very good.  The MDR food on Glory is comparable with other Carnival ships.  I had good table locations, good fellow guests, and the waiters were good.  They have returned the butter knife to the American Table. The saucers for coffee cups as well as tablecloths are now gone from breakfast tables. No Mongolian Grill nor Cucina del Capitano but they have the BBQ on deck ten and the Seafood Shack on Lido aft.  Very nice Alchemy Bar and location on the Glory. 

Crew / Other
The entire ship crew were very friendly, they themselves can make the cruise more enjoyable for the guest. Waiters and Cabin stewards especially very friendly. They always seemed to have a smile on their face and eager to please the guests. The excellent training by Carnival is quite obvious. The Carnival Hub application is wonderful, especially for checking your account balances.

This is my 63rd Carnival cruise, 5th Transatlantic, and 120th cruise overall. I am cruising with my dear wife (DW) and one other couple who are regular cruise friends (Friends), but I know many other regular cruise friends on this sailing especially the usual transatlantic suspects.

Day One—Friday--Oct 21—Barcelona—Embarkation

First at Alchemy Bar

We had the wonderful breakfast buffet at the H1898 then finished packing and ready to check out at 11:00 am.  We took a taxi to the port (€25) and arrived before noon.  With so many VIP’s and many guests arriving at the same time it was very busy at the terminal.  We made our way to Priority check-in and survived the long lines and were soon on the ship.  We made our way to our cabin and our bags actually beat us there…I guess their line was shorter.  Overall it was very acceptable process.  We went up to the Lido to meet our friends and for some food.  I had a salad.  After lunch we all took our little tour of the ship:  Havana Bar, Havana Deck, Red Frog Pub, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, JiJi's, then the Alchemy Bar where we had to have a cocktail and visit with Ana. After drinks and visiting old friends we continued the tour: viewing the Lobby area from deck 5 above, the Liquid Lounge Theater, then Lido deck where DW had Guy’s fries and I had a Guy’s Burger.  Then it was back to the cabin to unpack and set up the cabin until time for boat drill...my muster station is the MDR two decks down so no problems.  I met our cabin Steward Donna and got extra laundry bags so I could sort laundry…I will be taking advantage of that and already have laundry from our previous 10-days in Europe...I’ll need the clothes this cruise.  They had the traditional Welcome Aboard Show although I have not attended in years.  We have YTD (your time dining) this cruise so no rush to have to get to dinner, in fact DW had a room service Toasted Cheese Sandwich with chips and I ate later (about 8:50pm) in the Horizon’s Dining Room (MDR) with friend.  We had a great table at the aft windows and actually had a view of our late sail away from Barcelona.  For dinner I ordered the Sweet & Sour Shrimp (entree as a starter), Heart of Lettuce Salad, the Braised Beef Brisket entree, and Carmelized Phyllo with Carmel Creme for dessert.  By using the excellent Carnival HUB app and checking the online Fun Times we noticed the comedy show coming up so after dinner it was the Punchliner Comedy club located in the Limelight Lounge on deck 4.  I like the location and size and so far the deck plan of the new Vista seems to be well thought out and designed.  The comedian, Phil Walker, was from the UK and IMHO was just OK…I smiled a lot, but never had a LOL moment.  After the late comedy show it was cabin time.  A great day seeing old friends on the Carnival Vista.

Day Two--Saturday--Oct 22—Fun Day at Sea

Smooth seas overnight. I woke early did some internet time, but didn’t get around until after room service delivered breakfast goodies.  I went out to the private Havana area as I was curious as to how busy it would be mid morning and to get DW a diet coke.  It was not very busy…I think I’ll like the area during the day.  I returned to get myself a coke and was joined by DW when Donna came to clean the cabin.  For lunch we went to the NEW  Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.  I believe this is only the 2nd day it has opened since previous cruise was port intensive and due to poor weather. So new that the employees don't have custom uniforms as yet.  DW got the Mac&Cheese (cold) and Potato Salad, I got Roll, Beans, Pulled Pork, and Beef.  They serve you so the lines go fast, but not a lot of quantity.  It was very good other than cold M&C.  I will return.  Since we ate in the Havana area I got a really good Cuban Sandwich and a small Flan.  That filled me.  After lunch we went on a walkabout and to get a T-Shirt since all of mine were sent to the laundry…very few choices on T’s if any but we had a nice surprise when we returned to the cabin: three bags of clean laundry.  We have learned what to send and not send to Carnival wash & fold and it looked good except for the best dark shirt that had numerous large stains on it.  DW decides to give it a good shower rinse and that took care of stains…probably only soap…Woo Hoo thank you Carnival laundry folks.  They had a medical evacuation by helicopter this afternoon for a very ill guest, only took about 30 minutes...seemed to have gone well.  About 4:30 I headed to the Alchemy Bar, it’s so busy that opening is only guaranteed time to get bar side seat.  My Quick Fix was excellent as usual.  Thanks Ana.  I had a request to join a Trivia Team in the Red Frog Pub @ 5:15 pm so I went for the Trivia by Melody.  Our team tied for winners so we had a chug-off and I rep’d our team…we won of course.  We got a tube of Thirsty Frog ale for winning…Woo Hoo!  It was fun.  Back to the cabin then dinner in the Horizon’s Dining Room @ 8:00 pm.  DW had already ordered a Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich from room service but joined us for dinner.  I ordered: two Shrimp Cocktails, Gazpacho, and the Veal Parmesan entree.  It was good.  Afterwards Friends went to comedy club and we walked into the Havana Bar, but no entertainment in there tonight.  The feature show was the Playlist production: Studio VIP, but having seen it we passed on that show this evening.  It was a fun sea day on the Carnival Vista.

Day Three--Sunday—October 23--Gibraltar

Smooth seas overnight and we were docked by 9:00 am as scheduled.  This is my first visit to Gibraltar and new ports are always welcome. I went to the Havana Bar and got some Guava Empanadas about 7:30 am so we could have them later for breakfast.  At 10:00 am we went down to deck 0 debarked the ship and took a local shuttle (€3 or £2) into the town center of this British Overseas Territory.  From here we hired the official Gibraltar Taxi Association tour of ‘The Rock’, the advantage being these are smaller vehicles and they get you directly to the sites entrances whereas minibuses can not due to winding roads and parking.  We were very fortunate with weather, forecast was for rain and we had mostly sunshine with clouds on the tour.  We began our trip up with the first stop at the Pillars of Hercules with the wonderful view to Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar.  Second stop is the Caves of St. Michael’s, a beautiful natural pre-historic cavern formed over thousands of years, and host to thousands of visitors every year.  Third stop is the Top of the Rock with breathtaking views of the Bay of Gibraltar and the peak of the Rock.  This is the location of the majority of the famous apes and when the tour mentions interaction with apes…yes it’s true…lots of interaction.  The apes are cute, amusing, but still a bit dangerous.  It is amazing experience to have IMHO the best view (the old Prudential Ins. view) and the apes at same location.  The final stop is the Great Siege Tunnels that will take you back to the late 1700’s.  These tunnels were built by hand, crowbar and pick in only one year by the forefathers of the Royal Engineers.  There are excellent exhibits inside the tunnels.  It was a great tour and we enjoyed it very much.  Once we were dropped back in town we walked up & down the main street and had lunch at The Star Bar, Gibraltars oldest bar.  It was actually a very nice restaurant featuring Fish & Chips as their signature item.  We took shuttle back to ship about 4:00.  After the days walking, most it in town, I hit the hot tubs in the Havana area and enjoyed a coke to relax my aging knees.  Just before their 6:00pm closing I hit Guy’s Burgers for cheeseburger.  Nice.  The Captain and Cruise Director made a ship-wide announcement that we will be experiencing weather once we sail into the Atlantic and set course for the Azores beginning tonight. They will be closing the pools, securing outside furniture, closing cove balcony doors, and more to prepare.  Sail away was lovely and we sailed through the Straits we have seen all day and into the Atlantic.  We met our friends in the Havana Bar for a mojito, we stayed and listened to the Latin music while they went to dinner.  The music was very good.  By the time we retired the oceans waves and high seas was beginning to do its thing.  It was a fantastic day in Gibraltar…a lot of FUN. 

Day Four—Monday—October 24—Fun Day at Sea

Angry Weather

Angry seas overnight. Rain, wind, and waves all night.  Also I seem to be coming down with a bug…similar to what DW had last week.  So it was a tough long night as we turned our time back an hour as well…first of six times.  Due to weather the internet will be super slow today too.  We ordered a light room service breakfast at 9:00.  I took a nice long hot shower and some medication, but looks like I have a heavy cold.  We attended the Diamond Guest luncheon in the Reflections Restaurant at noon.  I ordered or shared: Blue Crab Salad with Candied Citrus, Mushroom Cappuccino (soup), Root Vegetables and Crunchy Leaves (salad), the Wagyu Beef Short Ribs entree, and the Raspberry Dark Chocolate Pate for dessert.  It was a great meal and it was nice to visit with Maitre’D Ken Bryne since we are in the ‘other’ restaurant on this cruise.  It was also nice to visit with other Diamond guests.  After lunch my plan was to take the next 24 hours off from any activities…if you have to confine yourself to he cabin...doing it while there are high seas is as good a time as any.  And the seas are really rocking and rolling.  I stayed in bed the rest of the day and night having a room service Grilled Cheese about 9:00 pm.  I suspect I've had the makings of a cold all along and drying off in the cooler air after the hot tub pushed me over edge...feeling better but will continue my 24 hour routine.  It was a rocking and rolling day on the Carnival Vista.

Day Five--Tuesday—October 25—Fun Day at Sea

Still high seas, but clearing skies

Still rough seas overnight and I’m continuing my 24-hour rest regimen.  We set our time back another hour so it will actually be 25 hours.  I had some fruit for breakfast from room service and a little internet time in the morning as the clouds have broken and we have some wifi. At 12:30 we met our friends for lunch, we ate at Cucina del Capitano.  I ordered two different styles of pasta bowls and it was quite good.  After lunch DW and I went to the Havana Bar to see if it was warm enough to get some sea air outside on the Havana Deck…it was not.  We did run into friends who were there for karaoke and we visited with them.  Before long I made my world karaoke debut singing a duet of ‘Jackson’.  Yes…really.  It may be my last time at karaoke too. No alcohol involved either as I’m just off my 24 hour rest time, but I may have had a sugar high from the Cherry Sundae I enjoyed from Cherry-on-Top.  After all that fun it was time to relax until time to go to the Alchemy Bar to meet friends for cocktails.  We visited with friends and enjoyed our drink made with TLC by Ana…bar snacks too.  We went to the Horizon’s Dining Room and was seated straight away.  DW ordered the Blue Cheese and Spinach Souffle, and I ordered two entrees (only): the Stir Fried Beef and Broccoli and the Stuffed Chicken Breast.  The stir fried beef was very good in the Teriyaki Sauce.  I had a Key Lime Pie for dessert.  The production show scheduled for tonight was delayed to another night due to the high seas.  CD Matt did his Love and Marriage show.  Since I’m still taking it easy and the fact we have an early excursion tomorrow, I retired to the cabin.  It was another rocking day at sea.

Day Six—Wednesday--October 26--Ponta Delgada, Azores Islands

Smoother seas overnight.  We were docked early in Ponta Delgada even before our 7:00 am room service ‘wake up call’ breakfast delivery.  Getting around early as we have a group tour of the island today.  We had a very nice mini-bus just for our group of eight friends and we were off at 8:30 to tour this beautiful island.  Unfortunately the weather was cool and cloudy but our guide Sara was enthusiastic.  She gave us a history of the Azores and Portugal as we dove by hundreds of small dairy farms on the way up to the Caldeira das Sete Cidades, the most popular site on the island.  As we got higher on the mountain the winds began to really blow.  We reached the Kings Overlook for a wonderful view.  Since it was overcast you couldn’t really see the contrast between the blue and green sides (a little bit on contrast in photos) of the two lagoons.  DW and I had visited here previously so we know how much better it would have looked in nice weather.  Still beautiful.  Down in the village we stopped at the local village church and a small store where we got the wonderful Portuguese egg custard pastries, Pastel de Nata, we have enjoyed in Lisbon and the Azores.  After our visit here we went to Ponta da Ferraria a beautiful observation point overlooking the Atlantic ocean.  There were many volcanic rock outcroppings, caves, and a spa further down the beach.  A new island location for us.  We began our return to Ponta Delgada and our last stop at a Pineapple farm.  They raised the famous Azores small pineapples in greenhouses and had a gift shop.  I did sample some ice creme with the pineapple topping.  We were dropped back at the ship at 12:30, it was a nice tour made better by a small group of good friends.  I went back to the cabin for a windbreaker as the weather was warmer, but an occasional very light shower.  DW and I went back into town and to the old city center viewing the old City Ceremonial Gates: Portas da Cidade, the Old Church: Igreja Matriz De São Sebastião, the Cobblestone streets with shoppes, cafes, and more.  We bought some linens and souvenirs in the smaller shoppes.  We had a great meal here on our past visit and I hoped to do so again.  We stopped at the Restaurante Mercado do Peixe known for local foods.  We ordered Olives, Butter, Bread, the local Cheese, a Sao Miguel Sirloin Steak with Garlic & Red Pepper, a unique Rice dish (larger grains fried with vegetables), and Chips (Fries).  I had hoped to order a pineapple for dessert as on last visit, but the meal was so filling I had to pass on dessert.  We made our way back to the ship for the 4:00 pm sail away and some rest. We met our group at the Alchemy at 6:30 pm and had a great little party visiting with new and old friends.  We went to Lido aft pool area about 9:00ish for late Pizza and/or Seafood and finished the night in the Havana Bar attempting to dance Salsa.  It was a Fantastic Day in the Azores and on the Carnival Vista.

Day Seven—Thursday--October 27—at Sea

Amor Cubano Show

Smoother seas overnight and I slept very well...past 9:00am in fact.  About 10:00 I went up to Lido deck for Eggs, Bacon, Toast, Sliced Potatoes, with Ham and ate on the outer deck as the weather is improving.  In fact we sat out on the Havana pool area and enjoyed the weather the rest of the morning.  For lunch I had a Cuban sandwich since it was convenient and DW brought down a salad from Lido so we could eat out on deck.  I went to trivia and we toured the forward and upper decks this afternoon.  Today’s the first day everything has been open since we now have nice weather…I think we will do the bicycles.  We went early enough to the Playlist Production Show: Amor Cubano to get good seats on 4th row near center.  I think the Playlist people have a huge winner with this show, they are using live music with the technical panel graphics they are so known for in their shows.  The live music adds so much especially to a show such as this.  The Latin group Imperio from the Havana Bar and the three piece horn section as well as the Production singers and dancers combined for a GREAT Show.  Probably the best show I have ever seen on Carnival.  We went to dinner in the Horizon after the show and had no problem being seated strait away in the area we requested.  I ordered the Tex-Mex Penne Pasta, Borsht, the Mojito Chicken entree, and Pineapple upside down Cake for dessert.  The afterparty for the Amor Cubano late show was in the Havana Bar this evening, but we retired after dinner.  It was an relaxing day with a great show on the Vista today.

Day Eight—Friday--October 28—at Sea

Smooth seas overnight compared to what we have had this cruise.  We turned our time back an hour and room service came at 9:00 am.  I also stepped out to the Ocean Plaza just outside our passageway for bacon and ham from the small breakfast area they have at the Taste Bar. We had a relaxing morning on this cloudy day.  Some braved the pool in Havana area, but most would not do the hot tubs…at least in the morning.  We had different ideas for lunch so we did both.  We went up to JiJi’s for the new style Mongolian Grill where you sit and order your stir fry (similar as to what is done with the Cucina de Capitano) and once cooked they bring it to your table.  Mine was very good.  Then we went down to the Blue Iguana  and DW had a vegetarian salad bowl.  We were both pleased.  We had a lazy afternoon and just relaxed most of the day.  We did go to the Alchemy for aperitifs and visit with friends. We were invited to eat with Senior Cruise Director and Brand Ambassador Mr. John Heald this evening at his table in the Reflections dining room late seating.  He was a very congenial host and it was a very pleasant experience. Before ordering the waiters brought a selection of Indian Foods to start with steamed white rice and fried rice.  It was nice, for dinner I ordered a Green Salad and the Turkey Dinner entree.  DW ordered a selection of vegetables.  It was a good meal and a change from YTD for us on this cruise.  On the 2013 Carnival Sunshine transatlantic cruise I attended long time Carnival Maitre’D Ken Brynes’ first ever official Carnival show in the theater.  Tonight at 10:15 he again had his wonderful show performing to a packed house with people in the aisles and staircases of the Limelight Lounge.  It was a great show of a dozen+ tunes and received deserved standing ovations.  This man is a huge asset to Carnival.  Very late we listened to the large combined Latin band in the Havana Bar…amazing talent.  It was a special Sea Day on the Carnival Vista.

Day Nine—Saturday--October 29—at Sea

I felt some rolling seas overnight and we again turned our time back one hour.  No room service this morning, I got some Guava Empanadas from Havana and some other breakfast items from the Ocean Plaza for the cabin.  It was a cloudy wet day today early but improved throughout the day to become a very nice sunny day.  For lunch I went up to Deck 15 Serenity Deck where they have a nice salad station…they have a very nice selection of salad items, but IMHO not worth the wait to have one made when they have a nice salad station in the Lido.  The adult only Serenity area looked very nice with hot tubs, a Bar, and a lot of covered loungers.  No real seating so I took my salad to the Lido Marketplace. DW had the Blue Iguana vegetarian bowl and we visited with friends after lunch.  In the afternoon I made my 2nd attempt at karaoke in the Red Frog Pub…I didn’t think I did as well as the first time…too much time to think about it I guess.  Maybe one more attempt.  But mucho gracias to my coach (remember..I never mention Guest names) a well known cruiser and good karaoke singer.  Later friends met at the Alchemy Bar and Melody from Entertainment joined us for a cocktail.  We went early for aperitifs with intentions to eat early and then attend Flick the excellent production show in the theater, so we went to dinner about 7:00 in Horizons a bit earlier than normal for us, we did have a short wait since there were more eating tonight as it was the second Elegant Night…with tablecloths.  I ordered the Stuffed Mushroom, the Grilled Jumbo Shrimp entree (as starter), the Duo of Filet Mignon and Short-rib entree, and the Key Lime Mousse for dessert.  I requested to be excused from the show as I hate battling the crowd for the limited seats and I saw the show twice recently.  I retired to the cabin and was able to follow the NCAA afternoon (in USA) prime time football over the internet including the OU/KU game.  A relaxing way to end a nice sea day.

Day Ten—Sunday--October 30—at Sea

Halloween Fun

Just enough seas to to know your on a cruise.  We turned back time again and are on Bermuda time now.  Weather is great today, best of cruise so we were up early and were out on Havana deck by 9:00 am this morning.  We carried our room service breakfast out and added the Havana guava empanadas.  We spent the day out there enjoying the view and sea air.  I even had a nice BBQ lunch from Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse located just around the corner from the Havana area.  DW did some power walking around the ship today and I was doing my job: being lazy.  Since we overnight tomorrow in Bermuda, the ship is celebrating Halloween today,  Decorations going up and pumpkin/halloween displays on pool deck and in the Lido Marketplace.  DW and the Friends doing Día de Muertos outfits so an afternoon of makeup for them.  I’m just wearing my Día de Muertos shirt that I wear every cruise on Cozumel day and done with it.  No dinner tonight for them so I had both a plain Guy’s Burger & half a Pepperoni Pizza.  My first pizza and it was very good.  We went to the Alchemy Bar and sat on the outer tables, a perfect spot to see Halloween costumes and goblins as the come and go along the Promenade deck.  It was fun taking photos and helping with photos of DW and Friends as they looked very good…especially when you can enjoy a cocktail as well.  They went to the costume dance party in Ocean Plaza while I enjoyed a beer in the Red Frog Pub.  It was a very special Halloweeny Day on the Vista.

Day Eleven—Monday--October 31—Bermuda

Smooth seas again and I had a nice sleep.  We were docked at King's Wharf by 8:30 am although debark wasn’t for another hour.  My first visit here and first impression is the water here is a beautiful blue.  I went to the Horizon MDR for a proper breakfast, my first for the cruise, something unusual for me.  I had my Melon, 3-egg, bacon, ham breakfast…very good.  We were in no rush to debark and got off the ship about 11:00 am. The upside of the Royal Dockyards is that there are nice shoppes, restaurants, museum, and more built in the old buildings of the former Royal Navy dockyards and facilities.  Most are historical and walking distance from the ship.  The downside is that you are on an isolated area on the island of Bermuda.  There is Taxi service, Buses, and an hourly Ferry that will take you to two locations on the island.  Guests went to beaches, site seeing, to the caves, and more.  We took the 25-minute ferry to Hamilton ($4.50 per token), the largest city and regional center.  From Hamilton you can go anywhere but chose to explore the city.  We walked Front Street looking at shops and department stores then Church street and the business/financial area.  Yes many men dressed in traditional Bermuda Shorts with hose.  A very different look and a very neat and classy look.  We visited or saw: the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity (Church of England), Sessions House, Perot Post Office, Queen Elizabeth Park, AS Cooper Dept. Store, and more.  We took the 3:00 ferry back to the Dockyards and looked around that area.  We found and really liked a Restaurant / Pub built in the old fort cooperage: The Frog & Onion.  They incorporated the large stone features of the fort including huge fireplaces (where they worked on barrels), huge light fixtures, flooring, and more.  The pub area was nice as well with entertainment and nice bartenders.  We returned to the ship and I had Pizza and we enjoyed the outer deck and sundown.  I later had Fish & Chips ($6) from the Seafood Shack and DW a salad from the Marketplace.  After a lot of walking today I retired early.  It was a beautiful day in Bermuda.

Day Twelve—Tuesday--November 1—Bermuda

The weather in Bermuda is amazing…much less humidity than in the Caribbean.  We slept in as no plans to get off the ship before we sail at noon.  I got a light breakfast at the Ocean Plaza and of course the empanadas from Havana.  We spent the morning on the outer deck in Havana area…when the engines fired up I could sense excitement…I think everyone was ready for the final stretch home to begin.  We sailed away at exactly noon and heading WNW towards New York.  DW loves the new taco bowls at the Blue Iguana as she can control what goes into them so that’s where we headed for lunch today.  I got a green salad from the Lido and a grilled chicken that I sliced as a salad topper.  Good lunch.  We now have network television so I watched a bit in the afternoon.  The ship had to have three separate Diamond/Platinum parties to accommodate all those on board.  We went to the final one and it was packed in the theater, but went better than I expected…I had several Tito Lemonades and was able to even order some Mudslides for the girls.  After the party we went to the Alchemy for a cocktail, then up to the  Seafood Shack for dinner.  I ordered the Lobster Rolls: one mayo and one butter.  DW had pizza, the friends a Lobster BLT and Fish & Chips.  All good.  They delivered the U.S. Customs forms tonight so we need to begin thinking about getting back to reality soon.  The feature show was a comedian juggler and friends (other) went to the late comedy shows that through reports have been smilers not gut busters this cruise.  It was a relaxing beautiful Bermuda sail away / Sea day on the Vista.

Day Thirteen—Wednesday--November 2—Fun Day at Sea

A little rolling seas over night. We turned our clocks back an hour for the last time…we are now on Eastern Standard Time for arrival in NYC tomorrow.  I was up in time to go down to the MDR for a nice breakfast this morning, my farmers breakfast, was good.  DW began her packing and we went out to the Havana deck for the last time this cruise to enjoy the cooler but very nice weather.  DW went to Blue Iguana for a Taco Bowl and Taco and brought them to our lounging area on Havana to eat, I waited until closer to 2:00 then went to JiJi’s for a Mongolian Grill.  It was good, but I like the old system much better.  I wonder if they are serving more or fewer guests with this system?  Cabin time after lunch to work on review, fill out U.S. Customs forms, and nap.  We met the Friends at the Alchemy Bar for cocktails…surprisingly not busy…I think everyone is drinking the wine and liquor they brought on board on this final night.  We had a very nice dinner with our extended group of friends in the Reflections dining room at 8:15.  It was good to see everyone for a farewell.  I ordered the French Onion Soup, a Green Salad, and the Encrusted Chicken entree.  For dessert I ordered the Carrot Cake and he unique Key Lime Cheese Cake Stuffed Apple.  The waiters did their final show and the wonderful Ken Byrnes very appropriately sang New York, New York.  Super Supper.  Once in the cabin after dinner I saw the final exciting innings of the World Series on TV…Cubs win.  It was great final day and dinner on the Carnival Vista.

Debarkation—Thursday-November 3—New York City
We were docked by 5:00 am in Manhattan.  I wasn't up early enough to closely see the Statue of Liberty when we came into port as it was about 4:00 am when we passed.  I was up and around by 6:00 am since I needed to pack.  I did go have a breakfast on Lido.  This would have been the cruise to use self assist…very few using it, we were among the last leaving at 8:00 am and we breezed off the ship and through customs.  We took a private car service to the hotel (twice the taxi cost), but it was a quick door to door service and we were checking our bags by 8:30 am with the hotel.  We refreshed at the hotel then we were off for the 10:00 am opening of the Met.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art is unbelievable, I’ve never visited anything more spectacular culturally.  We stayed for four+ hours visiting most of the exhibits and galleries.  We returned to the hotel, The Warwick about 3:00 and checked into our room to relax before our Broadway show tonight.

Ship

Cabin
We had cabin 5225 one of the new Havana classification cabins located aft on deck five. Basically a standard Carnival interior cabin with two closets, safe, drawers, shelves, mini-refrigerator, new style night tables, queen/twin bed, and a very large flat screen TV. It does have some upgraded Havana amenities such as towels, robes, and toiletries. This is the only the second Carnival ship with cabins located on the promenade deck.  Good location as deck 5 traffic goes from forward to aft and it’s next to Ocean Plaza and of course the Havana Bar.  Also access to the private Havana deck, pool, and hot tubs.

Crew
The crew were great.  Carnival does a great job in training, it is noticeable, and the primary reason along with value to cruise on Carnival.  Alchemy team were great as well as all servers I encountered, Cruise Director Matt and Entertainment team are very good, all MDR waiters very efficient, just an excellent crew throughout the ship.  Ms. Donna was as nice a cabin steward we have ever had on a cruise.

Food
Lots of good food options on the Carnival Vista: Horizon’s and Reflections Dining rooms (B-L-D), the Lido Marketplace (B-L-D), Guy’s Burgers (L-extended), Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse (L), Blue Iguana (B&L), Ocean Plaza Taste Bar (B&L), Havana Bar (B&L), Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse (D), JiJi’s Asian Kitchen (L&D), Bonsai Sushi (L&D), Cucina del Capitano (L&D). Seafood Shack (L&D), Pizzeria del Capitano (24/7), and a very good Room Service menu.  B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner.  Some have extra charges for dinner.

Thank you for reading.  As an older/experienced cruiser my activities will be much different from a newer cruiser as I will be doing fewer things on board simply because of the 'been there done that' factor and frankly I don't have the energy as I once did...Priorities do change over time.
